Great informative video. Just finished a 1500 mile road trip on my 2024 road glide. Dealer did the 1000 mile oil change awhile back. It's got a little over 5500 miles on it. Now it's up to me. Great to see the Harbor Freight jack. I have been using mine in the garage for my 4 seater RZR. Works well. Thanks!

One suggestion on doing your primary oil change you might want to remove the derby cover first which is the method I was taught back in the day of Evolution motors and still use today and here's the reason why... I had a buddy do the same method you were doing until he could not get his derby cover off because several of the hex bolts had been rounded but he had drained all of the oil out which meant he could not ride his bike to the dealer to get the issue fixed.The other method is that you are going to need to remove the whole primary cover so that you can drill and remove the damaged bolts and replace them. Over all a great video.

It's pretty straight forward. The only one you can't do is the primary....but you can technically empty it while the bike is on the jiffy stand and refill it while it is on the jack.

This is a good video for guys that are scared to attempt to change their oil. Here they can see what the dealer does. A couple things I do is, warm the bike up beforehand as warm oil flows faster then cold oil. To make cleanup easier and faster,I also put a large piece of cardboard on the floor to keep stray drips and drops from messing up the floor. I'll use a pizza box if I have one handy, works like a charm. Keep some rags or a box of those shop towels handy, and lastly, pick up some disposable gloves. Harbor freight sells them pretty cheap.,,

Another reason for not removing the engine oil dipstick plug initially is that leaving it in will let you know that your head breather butterfly valves are working properly. If the butterfly valves are good, your initial oil flow volume should increase once you remove the dipstick. If the flow volume remains the same or is only slightly faster, there is a good chance you need to replace your butterfly valves.

You should upgrade engine/primary to Amsoil 20/50 and trans to Amsoil severe gear if you plan to keep the bike a long time. Been wrenching on these for many years and seen the amazing job Amsoil does on protecting internal bearings and cam chain shoes from heat wear keeping them damn near brand new after 20k miles. 20/50 is too light for a gear slamming transmission, HD only uses that weight for EPA MPG ratings. Redline shock proof or Amsoil Severe gear best way to go for HD transmissions for much smoother shifts and heat protection. Syn 3 is decent, but it benefits the manufacturer more than it does the customer long-term.

Best advice out of all the comments Harley oil for your break in then get it cleaned up with the amsoil and redline you’re going to double the life of the bike by doing so! The video was nicely done otherwise.

I have a similar HF lift, I don't use it for oil changes, I use HF table lift, however before I had the table lift I did the changes on the floor. Using a 2X4 under jiffy stand to hold bike more upright......then I got a small scissors lift, drill controlled, that fit under without being in the way.......I also used low profile oil catcher from HF, still haven't found one better At oil filter I thought you were making mistake by not stuffing disposable paper shop towels under filter drain.......Next oil change I'm going to use the 2 holes in filter method to keep oil from going everywhere , instead of shop towels Don't know about your bike, mine says use gear oil for primary and transmission........notice one was 36oz other 28oz that's total 2qts You start getting clunks and/or trouble hitting neutral......primary box putting out a lot of heat......switch to gear oil It looked like you were putting a little too much umph on the filter, when you get it right the next oil change you can remove filter by hand I do have a little funnel that will fit into primary, but there's nothing close to the real primary funnel......of course its different sizes for tour dyna Sportster

I've never had a problem removing my filter (except for that one time I let a dealership change my oil). Putting shop towels near the filter is a good idea. I always get a little oil spillage removing the filter. I have recently started moving the drain pan under the filter to catch the oil.

I purchased the same HF 1500 lb lift and ended up dumping my streetglide with front wheel removed on it's front fender and tweaked my back trying to prevent the bike from falling completely while getting the kickstand unjammed from between the jack and bikes frame. I had a cheap generic mc lift with the bottle jack for years and never had an issue. The reason my HF lift failed is because of the cheap flat steel scissor bars that twisted sideways. When the jack was new i remember lifting it to max and stood on it. With my 200 lbs i could rock the part the bike sits on left, right, backwards and forwards a lot. It has way too much play to support a 1000 lb mc near alone 1500 pounds its rated for. I had even placed the bike slightly back to compensate for the removed wheel when those scissor bars failed. I've had the bike for 11 years and do all my own maintenance so had it on the old jack many times with one wheel off front or rear, front forks removed and even moved the bike on the lift with no problems. The 2nd problem i have with the HF lift is it will slowly lower itself. If the lift lock isn't engaged it will lower until the bike falls over unless it's leaning to the left with kickstand extended. I left my bike on the old lift for weeks and it never lowered. I emailed HF corporate a couple months back and have yet to get a reply. The lift is a safety hazard period!
@jasonshortphd
@jasonshortphd Жыл бұрын
The bottle jack is NEVER intended to hold it up. That is why the locks exist. If it twisted though that is a big problem for such a heavy bike.

@RidingandWrenching
@RidingandWrenching 8 ай бұрын
I don't know the exact reason why they did that. My guess is that the primary (clutch), engine, and transmission each use oil differently. You probably don't want material from your clutch plates circulating through the engine.
