Knowing about these mistakes can literally save your life. Surprisingly, they are not physical mistakes, they are mental mistakes which makes them even worse since street fights are about seconds, and you have only seconds to react before your opponent attacks you. You have no time to over think the situation, only to react.
The first common mistake in a street fight is forgetting about your awareness. If you are face to face with your attacker, you should not just focus mainly on him. You need to be aware of your surroundings, because you do not know if he's alone, if he has a weapon, or if someone is going to come at you from behind. You have to expect the unexpected and be entirely aware of everything surrounding you, not just the guy you're fighting. You need to look at his body language, see if he is looking around, or if there is an improvised weapon you can use to defend yourself against him. Not being aware is a very common mistake that many people do, and it can get you killed very quickly. So, be aware of everything.
The second common mistake in a street fight is underestimating your opponent. Your opponent can look like a typical guy, he can be scrawny, little, weak, but that does not mean he cannot hurt you. You should not judge only on appearances, because you do not know the mindset of your attacker, you do not know his history, what type of person he is, if he has a weapon on him to hurt you with, or if he is with friends. You should always look at all your opponents equally, you should believe they are dangerous, no matter how big or small they are. Underestimating your opponent will get you in serious trouble in a street fight. Don't do that mistake.
The third common mistake in a street fight is assuming. Do not assume your opponent is alone, that he does not have a weapon, that this is a fair fight. Because it most likely is not. Assuming is a very dangerous mistake to make, because in a street fight you only have seconds to react before it's over.
If you over think the situation, and assume how you will strike your attacker, or how he will strike you, you will most likely get badly injured or even worse killed.
You should not assume, you should react. You should be present and aware during a street fight, not assuming his or your moves. Just be prepared to react to whatever happens in that particular moment. You must react offensively or defensively, whatever you do, do not assume or over think the situation because that will get you killed. The key is to be present at that moment, fights are about seconds, it's about how fast you can intercept or go pre-emptive.

That's a fact!!! Lmao 🤣 people think because they can get really angry or they go to the gym lifting weights they assume they can kick ass lol it doesn't work like that, most street fights omg lol wide swings no head movement no sitting on there punches fighting tall lol and the only reason why those wide haymakers land it's because the other dumb ass is standing there ready to take it because they don't know shit!!!

Yes! I'm glad someone made this point! If there is a bar or club in town that has a reputation for fights breaking out, don't go into those establishments. Like bad parts of town you avoid. Best way to win any street fight is to never get into one in the first place if you can help it. That should have been number four on Nick's list.

From my experience I say that besides avoiding all street fights if possible, The best advice I can give anyone in a street fight is 1. Don't square up against your opponent. 2. Remain calm as if your trying to defuse the situation. 3. Hit them when they're not looking. Then get out of there before his friends get involved or show up.

Makes sense. I think a good level of fear and desire to avoid a fight does everyone good. I’ve always seen the only purpose of fighting as protecting others or yourself in a last ditch scenario. Folks “looking” for a fight to be a tough guy will eventually find one they will regret. A lot can go very wrong even for those who know what they’re doing.

+Nick Drossos Thanks Nick. I think alot of people will find your video useful. I have also worked in clubs and the like for many years in a country where getting drunk and drugged and then fighting someone is a sign that you've had a good night. In taking out hundreds of these clowns the one thing that always interested me was how many of these people that wanted to fight, had no fight training experience whatsoever. So, my advice to people who have not trained in fighting would be to try wherever possible not to get into a fight. If you can, don't let your ego get the better of you, your health and the welfare of those you care about. Don't get out your car, don't mouth off to the security staff or Police, treat people with respect. You don't know who they might know. You will personally do the best you can when you know you are in the right. Good luck out there people. Respect.

1 person in 10,000 or more ever gets 2-3 belts in any style. You are a pro level martial arts guy. A normal person is NOT like you and cannot do what you know you can do: read an opponent, respond, strike accurately, etc. You do what you can do, but it is NOT the best thing for others. They are not like you or similar in most any important way

This right here is exactly why I love your videos. SO many other self defense channels on KZfaq rely on very specific and move-like scenarios to instruct people on how to defend themselves. You are so realistic because you never assume what the other person is going to do and you prepare for every situation. Thanks so much Nick, I and all these other people really appreciate what you do.

Good advice Nick. I'd add a fourth mistake though. Getting into a fight in the first place. Before I could fight I'd have to talk my way out of a situation. I still use that skill...
@MsRandomPro

Art Hunter And that my friend, is the best tool one can ever have. Like, just to break it down, I'll say this, everyone "can and know how to fight", it's in us from the beginning of time... you throw punches maybe not as accurate and flawless as others, but if some of those punches would hit the right way/mark, boom KO, just like that. example 2, to have that unique tool to talk you're way out of different situations, is to me the most important to me, because, i know first hand. To quick, just like that, change you mind set, quickly to know what to say, how to say, and what to say, it's like getting in to he's mind of some sort, and try fallow he's mind set, almost like you reading his mind and thoughts, before he has a chance to even speak, you've already said things what he's thinking of, and he feels you, and you lure him out of a fight... and that to me, is the most challenging thing to do. and 3, the situation, how it feels, what vibes does he send out and not send out, is he aggressive, what does he's eyes say... he's body language, is he nervous.. than he probably doing it of group pressure etc etc, there are many elements to consider quick at ones. and i think like this, before you should lean how to fight fight, you should learn how to speak. Because not everyone speaks the same "language" you could have set him of by something that you think and consider is a normal thing or behavior, but in he's world "language" that means something completely different. code if you will. And one last important thing, the most crucial, know how and when to look. Because how often have we heard, "yeah, he punched me because i was looking" or looking wrong. It's because those how have looked wrong, disrespected the other guy, just by looking, in a certain way that he's not familiar and know anything about. Hope this helps. Cheers

I always assume that when a guy is looking for trouble is because he's got a back up plan. So don't mind to be treated like a coward, just avoid the fight, keep your distance and stay alive. No one goes attacking random people over there unarmed (you don't know what weapon people could be carrying around), nobody is that brave or that stupid.

My father drilled into me the idea of avoiding the fight to begin with. He didn't know the term but now we would call it 'situational awareness'. Know the exits, pay attention to the mood of the room, if someone causes trouble then don't allow your senses to narrow down to only them etc. This video exemplifies this simple lesson. Pay attention and keep your distance. I really don't understand why people allow someone to get right in their face. One of the first lessons in self defense taught to police officers is that they must keep at least an arms length distance (UK police vs unarmed person) at all times. This is simply because you want to keep an eye on their hands and have the ability to move if they strike. If you can't see their hands (behind the back) or one hand is in a pocket, then you need to double that, this is very basic stuff. It may look tough to be right in someones face, but that makes it easy to unfold a knife one handed and shove it in your ribs before you ever see it coming.

I know inside myself what I am capable of and I respect myself enough: I don't need respect from the type of person who encourages a fight. I never gained respect after a fight. If you can walk away from a fight do it. I used to love fighting people who started with me in bars and clubs.The best way to diffuse a situation and walk away is just stepping back and saying to the other person my bad if I offended you in anyway I didnt mean that and telling him that your both way better than that,and than saying sorry and walking away. Ive done this many times in the past and I am surprised everytime how effective that technique works. The last thing i have to say is always be prepared to defend yourself and never let your guard down,and stay alert!

@@firstname3255 think of it like this i think MOST PPL don't want to get into a fight. but think the other person does so they go on the offense first thing. u can defuse the situation but staying calm. let them win their ego battle . but if they try to fight more than likely they can;t fight well. most trained fighters know the outcomes of fights and fight as a last resort. so u can do what u have to in that situation.

You don't want to give him enough distance to pull out a weapon and the problem with putting your guard up such as a boxing stance or whatever is that you're also bringing the fight on. Raising your hands in a relaxed position is far better because it allows you to protect yourself if he should throw a punch but it also allows you to strike first. Plus, it's a natural, non-threatening stance. You get into a full guard like a boxing stance, you're pretty much challenging him to fight and he may be a better street fighter.

rsine100 Sorry man, but that's how I do, if a punk gets too close I just put my guard up and tell him to fuck off, if he doesn't than I react, it's natural. I practiced fighting and love it to do that with my mates with gloves and all, but in stupid traffic some idiots simply ask for it. Generally those punks who are askin' for it are not good fighters at all, just full of shit and talk shit, running their mouth. Just today it happened to me, a crazy idiot cut me off and jumped out of his car started yelling and threatening then I got out and he came towards me, but I put my guard and actually challenged the idiot because I couldn't stand him anymore and he got pissed scared, anyway should of smacked the hell outta his fuckin' face but I avoid that as that can lead you into trouble like law suits and shit because people are pieces of shit. Good day man :)

i'm not an expert on street fights but i have been in a couple and two things i saw in them that allowed me to win most of them was this 1) my opponent did not breath much , he would hold his breath throwing his punches he would hold it when hes entering to attack me and he would get winded very easily and very quickly it slowed him down very fast it weekend his strength very fast and i hardly had to fight back just avoid and he tired out and gave up. 2) he was angry , in every fight i have seen ones i have been in and ones i have seen everyone is always angry which is understandable . but when your angry your vision begins to tunnel and then your mind is only thinking " i'm gonna fuck this dude UP " and you only think and prepare for what you can dish out in a few quick blows you DO NOT think about what your opponent can do to you which is why ( at least from experience ) i find its better to breath and attempt to calm down and open your mind you will preform a lot better.

Number 4 ( number 1, for me ) is don't let people get in your face. If you're in my face, I may not realize that you're reaching into your pocket for a knife. If you're in my face you can headbutt me as an opening move. In situations like these, the fight's over before it starts. Never let people into your personal space......unless you want them there. Lol.

All very good tips. I used to own a rest/bar and did my own bouncing and yea, sometimes the guy you would look at and think is a wimp would be the toughest guy there. 1 time in particular.. there was this guy.. he was a huge, strong lumberjack type guy who was notorious for fighting good and was in and out of jail a lot.. anyway, 1 night he was trying to pick a fight with some skinny guy who was minding his own business.. the big lumberjack kept calling him outside and the skinny guy was trying to avoid it, well eventually they went outside and he went after the skinny guy.. the thin guy dodged a few punches, then landed a hard right that sent this lumberjack on his butt and he couldnt get up. I intervened at this point and the skinny guy was cool and and backed off. Just goes to show- NEVER UNDERESTIMATE YOUR OPPONENT!!!!

As a Boxer I can tell you the actual (#1 mistake) that you should have put on here and that I literally see every single guy makes as instinctual is... - {Walking up to the guy and sticking your CHIN out puffing up in front of them looking tough. What you are actually doing is what we call in boxing - being very - "Square". You are painting a HUGE target to hit on yourself} Exposing your chin is literally THE FIRST RULE YOU LEARN in defense. Never.. never.. never... never ever stick your chin out in plain site. You are literally giving someone a hail marry to tee off on. The way you knock someone out cold is by hitting their "Chin" not their ear, not their skull, not the nose. For the love of god. Please protect your chin..... As only 145lbs trained boxer.. I swear to you If you give me a free shot on your chin it will feel like a Louisville bat to your face. Please stay safe out there.

***** Not much force, i'm only 5'10" and i've sparred a 6'0 guy stunning him with 16oz gloves by only hitting at 50-65% right on the chin. Even that caused him to stumble and our coach had to stop the sparring session because the guy didn't know what happened. Even a highly highly trained professional female boxer could fuck up an average sized guy by hitting him square on the chin. Boxing has absolutely NOTHING to do with how big your muscles are. ZERO. ZILCH, A good boxer will know exactly Where & When to hit you. Period. The average person does not know how to properly block a punch either. Power is God Given, Proper Technique, Pivots, Heavy Handed, Torque, Timing, Speed, Practice Repetition for Years, and Accuracy. Thats it... Power does not come from huge bicep muscles. Every Trainer and every boxer will tell you that exact same thing. A perfect example of this is watch the fights: Kovalev vs Pascal I & II

***** Yes my friend, tuck your chin. It will feel very unorthodox for quite a while but after a a time it will become apart of your natural fluid mobility. Raise shoulders, tuck chin, angle body but keep balanced feet, and always keep hands up. Everybody has the habit of dropping their left. I make it a habit after i'm done punching to tap my left glove to my temple so i remember i'm not dropping my hands often even if i'm tired. Proper technique becomes the hardest when you are tired. Thats why we practice proper fundamentals many times so it becomes natural movement like walking.

The first mistake is getting sucked into the fight escalation ritual. Leave as soon as you key into the body language indicators or smash the guy. Name calling, threats, bouncing, chest pushing etc are all a waste of time. Get off the X or get fighting. You are now inside the OODA loop of the threat going through his high school bully posturing routine.
@CzarnyMlot

***** Good comment but what does "OODA" mean ?
@allaspects1749
@allaspects1749 8 жыл бұрын
CzarnyMlot The phrase OODA loop refers to the decision cycle of Observe, Orient, Decide, and Act, developed by military strategist and USAF Colonel John Boyd. Boyd applied the concept to the combat operations process, often at the strategic level in military operations. It is now also often applied to understand commercial operations and learning processes. The approach favors agility over raw power in dealing with human opponents in any endeavor.

T Raa It was a big lesson I learned early in life with bullies. Intra species fighting is about solving disputes without serious injury or death (in most cases). It is not normal for a species to kill it's own over minor issues as that is counter productive to survival of the species. The posturing routine gives one the opportunity to back down. Most bullies are cowards with little to know real fight ability. The bluff and pose with their ground around for fire support and the victim takes a beating because he is scared if he fights back it'll turn out worse. Every time someone started "dancing" with me I said(internally) fuck it and went for it - it came out in my favor not because I was necessarily the better fighter but I had already flicked the switch to destroy mode while they were expecting more shoving and name calling ;-).

+Rudolph Walker "but I had already flicked the switch to destroy mode while they were expecting more shoving and name calling" - very good point. Most people are 'talkers' and posers. They do the gangster shoulder shrug, the bob, all that shit. A real bad dude will never do that shit. He'll have you OUT before you know what hit you. The phonies will ramp it up, burst blood vessels as they're ranting their intentions, flex, tighten their lips, widen their eyes, etc...all to intimidate...then the 'real bad dude' calmly and without emotion or warning, wrecks them. The fool and his TapOut T is usually finished off before he even processes the information. lol . .

If we're talking here about a REAL street fight, first of all: DO NOT FIGHT!!! Honor, loyalty and all that bullshit are for other situations. Here in Brazil we have a dictated, he may say: "There is no honor between bandits." Or others like: "A hundred years of forgiven for a bandit that steal from another." Know what i'm saying? Street Fights ain't about honor, there's no honor in a street fight, no loyalty or what so ever. If you get at one, IT'S A WAR! Be prepared TO ANYTHING! Be prepared TO DO anything! Nick supposed about the guy, well, now supposed about you! If you think he have a knife, SO YOU BETTER HAVE ONE TOO, TO KILL THAT MOTHERFUCKER! But the best hint, still is: DO NOT FIGHT IN A STREET FIGHT!!! (Real shit could happen... You better be prepared!) Sorry for my bad english, i'm from Brazil. Just my opinion about this video, here in Brazil street fights mean be prepared to anything or to do anything, DO NOT TRUST NOBODY!

The advice I would give is choose your battles. Do not fight over a girl or some kind of drunken provocation. Fight to defend yourself or somebody else. And if the person who attack you is bigger, backed or armed, the gentlemen rules do not apply for your ennemy is not following them.
@steamsteam6607
@steamsteam6607 5 жыл бұрын
If you think about "gentlemen rules" when fighting you are not fighting for good reasons anyways. I'm not saying you should kill them when they're already out cold. I'm saying all is allowed to defend yourself.
@MrRazmut
@MrRazmut 5 жыл бұрын
@@steamsteam6607 I think he meant gentlemen rules as in don´t eye gouge or bite a person in a street fight because that´s gonna escalate the level of violence like 1000%, if you hold a dude down and if necessary put a couple strikes on his face someones gonna come pull you off 95% of the time. If someone (especially the dudes buddies) will put a boot on your head if they randomly see you drilling a guys eyes out with your fingers. Instead of "alright break it up calm down man, shit." while pulling you off him it´s "you sick fuck!" while soccer kicking you in the head.

Great essential advise! I grew up in east Oakland, CA and have been in more street fights than I can remember. I fought gangsters, I fought homicidal killers, you name it. I've seen people die. I was blessed, I either won or survived uninjured when outnumbered which was most of the time. I just happened to stumble upon this video on KZfaq, however the 3 things Nick Drossos says in this video are the reason I am alive today! You can train for years, have multiple 'black belts', but let me assure you of this; a gang of thugs are like a wolf-pack, only more cunning, and if you fail to master the 3 mental disciplines in this video, all of your training will have been for nothing in a real world scenario.

Excellent video, and strategy, thank you. This is the key self defense strategy I have taught my family and friends for years. What some identify as 'discipline' today becomes a mere fact of life tomorrow. No one who presents themselves as a potential hostile is allowed inside your perimeter for any reason, no matter what. Learn to control your distance, know your dimensions, evasive, elusive. I perceive everyone as being armed, because they are. I treat everyone as a world class master fighter, no matter how things may appear, or not appear. Utilizing any and everything available to gain victory is your number one objective. Sometimes, your best strategy is too run, elude, evade....this is a strategy that is used by some of the greatest fighters ever known.

This is the best advice coming from person experiance. Forget everything you know be present, aware, and ready to react. You can be good a driving a car, but if you aren't present, aware, and ready to react you will most likely crash no matter how fast or slow you are going. Even if self defense is second nature to you. You need to be in the now and toss your pride/ego/anger away.
