In which I cover 3 variations on the "OSR" RPG - the first is a faithful recreation, the second is a blend of old-school and modern design, and the third is another representation of the old-school rules, with its own twists (though only a handful).
Here's where you can pick them up:
Swords and Wizardry Complete Rulebook (Revised):
preview.drivethrurpg.com/en/p...
The Black Hack Second Edition:
preview.drivethrurpg.com/en/p...
Wight-Box: Original Medieval Fantasy Adventure Campaigns:
thebasicexpert.com/products/w...
Music from a couple of games (WoW and DOS2).

A rather brief rundown, but appreciated. The WoW music in the background was a welcomed nostalgic touch.

What makes Wight Box particularly unique is the inclusion of the Chainmail rules into 0D&D. Which as far as I know, has not been done in most other 0D&D clones. At least not in the way The Basic Expert did it. The inclusion of Chainmail also causes 0D&D to be a more comeplete, crunchy, and heroic game than a lot of people realize. The whole idea is that 0D&D was probably more than likely intended to be used with Chainmail, and few people have ever realized it. This was almost a forgotten way of playing the game.

I have never really looked through the Chainmail rules, but I always find that connection so fascinating!

@@tasty_wind4294 Ok, reading through both I still prefer Wight-Box for price, layout, and art. S&S also takes more creative license with the rules (describing itself as nostalgia, not retro-clone) whereas W-B tries to stay more faithful (The author goes into detail about this being his attempt to recreate the original experience in its completeness.) That is a personal choice on the part of the reader though as to which you want. If you want the OSE of Chainmail & OD&D then you want W-B, if you want the DCC of Chainmail & OD&D then you want S&S. (Just my thoughts.)

Great to see S&WC represented! I'm a simple man when it comes to wanting to play the game that started it all (*with* the best of its supplements) presented in a clean, compact form. I've played and enjoyed every version of classic (A)D&D, but S&WC is now my desert island rulebook.

Happy to see Wight Box mentioned! I'm currently trying to rediscover how OD&D was originally intended to be played using Chainmail, and The Basic Expert has been an incredible help.

S&WC has the "sticks to snakes" spell. While, not listing any snakes in the monster section. This dynamic was found in 1e AD&D Monster Manual, and the follow up Player's Handbook. Where the closest monster type found are only giant snakes. Whereas the spell converts sticks the length of 1 yard into actual snakes. That could realistically be found here on planet Earth. This issue was addressed in the Monster Manual II released some 6 years later.

out of all the ones I've seen, Swords & Wizardry feels the most interesting, as it feels almost like Basic D&D with 1e elements, instead of just trying to copy B/X or be some kind of throwback rules which so far I've not found any that look like they are for me. A lot of them are IMHO too basic, which while I get is the point they just feel overly primitive.

My dream level/class game would be the general frame of the Black Hack, but replace the casting and inventory stuff with that from Shadowdark. Probably a few other things that I can't think of atm. Basically neither completely clicks with me, but for different reasons. I don't generally like level/class but MAN! Both of these are so close to bringing my intetest back.

@@RedMageGM I sorta already did, but not really. It was a couple of years ago now, I created a game called Less is More which was my attempt to process the ideas of OSR into a format I could understand/enjoy. It's free on DriveThru, if you're interested. It's like 20 pages, and really barebones, but if I ever DID do something with it, shadowdark influence would definitely be a part of that

Another interesting video! I love exploring all this old school RPG content with you :) I actually have Swords & Wizards and Black Hack here as hard copies! Played a mini campaign with The Black Hack. And as is tradition at this point: Another shout out for the background music in this videos. I LOVE the classic WoW OST and especially the music you chose! I used to replay WoW for many years just to start a new character, just to run around Teldrassil, listening to the music and be taken back to the time I first played this game!

I have and played S&W @ at Con in the living campaign, my character died but it was fun. The single save thing, even with conditional bonus and such isn't my favorite mechanic but it is simple. I have Blacksword hack which is derived from the blackhack, its simple and I think could be great for solo stuff. WightBox looks like a cool reconstruction, I looked over early developments as I am a member of TBE server. Its feel like a homage to OG D&D. SO much OSR so little time.

You should also do a video with another 3 & compare them with these 3. The next 3 should be Shadowdark, Hyperborea & Barbarians of Lemuria. Lamentations of The Flame Princess wouldn't be a bad idea either

Re: Saving Throws: my favorite approach is still the 3.x Edition method, which is also used by DCC. Reflex, Fortitude, and Will seemed to me like they summed up the plethora of stuff you'd want to shrug off simply yet sufficiently. I think 5 saves from the old school approach, and especially the 6 attribute-based saves from 5E, are just mechanics bloat.
@RedMageGM
@RedMageGM 4 ай бұрын
That's what I started with, so I definitely see the appeal! I really like the six attributes without Proficiency, which simplifies checks, attacks, and saves all into one thing.
@jasonGamesMaster
@jasonGamesMaster 2 ай бұрын
I like almost nothing about 5e, lol, but attribute saves are really intuitive and actually reduces the bloat. Older saves are an extra mechanic that 5e actually just does away with. 5e saves are just another attribute roll like all the others.

I have supported S&W kickstarter since I was intrigue by 0D&D. Also, there was tons of supported materials (monstrosity books and Frog God Games adventures and other designers)... Matt Finch was interesting in interviews and seems to be a good guy - I wanted to support his work. Like you said, 'why do I need another ruleset of D&D'... I played solo to test and learn the rules since I cannot convert my group to that game. I feel like I'm investiguating and learning OSR for the fun of it. There are many pros/cons for each one and I'm starting to learn and see what I like in a game to play solo or with a group. Do I want a S&S game or a fable like adventures, a fantasy super hero game... Do I want options in combat, more crunchy and interesting/original characters progression... Are there new design idea or well supported with themes (Dolmenwood and Behind the wall). If you have the chance, have a look at new 'OSR' (if that term exists!): Olde Swords Reign and Tales Of Argosa (Low Fantasy Gaming 2e - they have a kickstarter). Both are a good mix of OSR and 5e.

@AnthonySimeone
@AnthonySimeone 4 ай бұрын
@RedMageGM indeed! I don't understand the angst and resistance to more variety. You just have to manage overwhelm from too many choices, which can be done by knowing what you want out of a rule system based on your preferences and gaming circumstances. It's like people who complain about having to stick to canon in published settings. I never understood that either. You don't like some aspect, the writer/creator isn't coming to take your book away if you change something! If your players complain about deviation from canon, tell them "this is my version of the setting." Similarly, if you have a rule set that works for you, ignore the new variants that come out but don't automatically poo-poo them.

One argument that I've heard is that the people who release clones of previous games could be focusing on more creative projects, but that isn't something that resonates with me.
