In 2011, Johnnie Yellock was on his second deployment in Afghanistan when the vehicle he was in hit an improvised explosive device. When Yellock regained consciousness and looked down, he could see the soles of his feet staring back at him. After applying tourniquets to himself to staunch the bleeding, and then supervising a helicopter MEDEVAC landing for himself and his interpreter, Yellock was rushed to a military hospital and eventually evacuated back to the United States. For his actions on that day, Yellock received the Bronze Star, Purple Heart, and Combat Action Medal. Doctors said that he would, in all likelihood, be a double, below-the-knee amputee. Thanks to modern limb-salvage techniques - and 32 surgeries - Yellock not only has both of his legs but now uses them to do everything from play golf to, yes, drive his classic 1984 Porsche 911 Targa.

Just a great story. I lost my right foot to an IED in the Helmand province of Afghanistan in 2010. I now drive with my left foot, but was forced to sell my manual transmission 1972 Chevelle SS 396 project car after my amputation and subsequent surgeries. Not being able to drive a manual again was, crazy as it seems, one of the biggest heartbreaks of my injury. Don’t cry for me, I now bang through gears of a PDK in a Carrera S, but man would I have preferred to have the manual. Keep these great stories alive Hagerty. 👍

Such a nice and inspiring story. I almost lost my left leg from the knee down from a motorcycle accident and is currently in a similar fixator that he was in and have had 15 surgeries on my leg. Nice to see that he was able to get thru it all and drive his dream

Coming from a Recon Marine I salute you. I myself am I wounded military vet and I've had multiple surgeries on my shoulder, specifically my right shoulder and I was told I wouldn't be able to do certain things but when a particular was shifting the car. I stayed at it, followed the rehab, listen to the advice of the doctors, and now I'm almost at full mobility. Always keep hold of your passion, and never give up. Beautiful Targa
