Game of Thrones - Why Tyrion Can't Be Killed
Tyrion Lannister has a knack for staying alive. He is constantly getting into trouble and talking his way out. But Tyrion's genius is replicable if you learn how he thinks. And one of the first thing he thinks of is what other people want. That is how he manages to continue through season after season in Game of Thrones.
We cover 3 ways to figure out what people want by examining how Tyrion Lannister survives through Game of Thrones:
1. Cold reading - watch how Tyrion cold reads Bronn . Contrast that with Lommy, who never even attempts to cold read Polliver before he kills him
2. Listening - Tyrion listens very carefully to what people say. When the pirates take him hostage and mention they will sell his "manhood" to the cock merchant, he comes up with a clever reason for them to keep him alive. Cersei provides a foil to this in how she behaves with Joffrey.
3. Asking people for their stories - Tyrion asks the members of the Night's Watch for their stories, learning about Grenn and Pip. Jon Snow, on the other hand, just assumes that they hate him because he is better.
If you put those 3 things into place you might not win The Game of Thrones, but you can still display some of Tyrion's genius.

About Lommy, you don't say enough for what he's doing! 1st mistake, when he was yelling for help, he didn't say please. 2nd mistake. When he was asked, Is something wrong with your leg boy? He answered. LOOK AT IT. He was RUDE! instead of saying something like, I got injured with an arrow and I can't walk. And 3rd mistake, When he was asked, can't you walk? He answered. START CARRY ME. HE GAVE A COMMAND! Instead of saying, if you take care of me, I will be in your debt. You give FIRST, then you ask!

Tyrion is a perfect example of someone who NEVER forgets the purpose of his interactions with others. Add to this his excellent speaking ability and it’s no surprise that so often he’s able to escape tricky situations. With many characters in GoT being complete slaves to their emotions, Tyrion almost always keeps calm and remembers what’s really important.
@vesper9547

Tyrion lannister became my favourite since first season when Jon snow asked him "why do you read so much?" and he replied " a sword needs a whetstone if it is to keep its adge.. So does a mind needs books". Often in the show he is shown to study books which I have rarely seen other characters do. So since that season I knew this little one is going to last till the end whatever that may be. Also he is the only one from the aristocracy to have visited the wall out of sheer curiosity.

I love Tyrion for one reason. He proves something I've always said. "Knowledge IS NOT Power... only the APPLICATION of Knowledge is Power." Knowledge is merely a tool... and better to have a tool than not... but a Hammer sitting unused on a desk doesn't build a house. You have to APPLY that tool. Tyrion applies his constantly gained Knowledge.

Bradley Kell During a brief flirtation with Business Studies, we looked at the Information Society, and a theorist argued for a hierarchy with data at the bottom, then information, then knowledge, and at the top is wisdom. I think Tyrion has this model down pat, because he is never content to assume anything and his drinking allows others who don't know him well enough to underestimate his intellectual and emotional intelligence.

MsWrongPerson You're sort of missing the point here. The fact that Tyrion is a Lanister and that so many people know it is only an added bonus. The real trick is knowing what people want an what is within your power to give it to them. Take for instance, you're a bout to get mugged. In that instance, it quite obvious that the mugger wants your money, and could possibly take your life for it. What you should consider is why the person wants that money. It could be for food, drugs, anything. Imagine you don't have that money, and in his volatile state the mugger might harm you or worse out of anger, fear or frustration. Consider what you do have to give him whose loss may or may not be of consequence to you, but will achieve a similar goal for him. ( Like for instance, a snack or something which might not have been planning to eat, and was looking for a way to dispense of).

0:05 You're right. And when you reminded me of this, you reminded me that the reason why he's the most devastating of players is because he doesn't hold power, so he never makes himself a target, instead he convinces the people with power that they want the same thing. He is a persuasive GENIUS. And it's the reason why he's the most interesting character. His "crippled" and "lesser" form make everyone think he has no power, and the fact that he's always in positions where he has none basically makes this a running theme. But because they lower their guard toward him, they lower their guard toward words because they expect violence, he's able to convince them much easier toward his own point. Like you said in another video, their frame is violence, his is a third option, usually "I go, I leave you alone, and you'll get something out of it too".

Tyrion revealed he studied his halfwit cousin to discover what his reason was for crushing beetles. Tyrion knew what he wanted, to crush beetles... But he wanted to know why. If you study hodor you can figure out one of his biggest desires is simply to be safe. With his size you can wonder why... And I don't know the real answer and without him having the ability to talk we may never know. But I suspect this is subject to change if bran takes control of him more often in future seasons. He saw that he killed a man already. This type of thing can lead to him feeling more secure and probably lead him to finding a different desire. Tyrion would have no interest in hodor most likely. He's just scared and wants to be protected. But if he did decide to find out more about him he'd probably start by asking hodor simple questions and looking at his facial expressions for answers. He'd attempt to find out who hodor has known the longest and then ask them about hodors story

It's been 30 years since I finished a 12-year stint as a US Army interrogator/linguist/humint collection, primarily in S Korea. This young man's observations and strategies have been very impressive so far. Since it's been so long and as I start to write more fiction, these summarized keys on how to "communicate" with other people are priceless reminders along with maybe a new idea or two. I use communication in quotes because I believe the word encompasses so much more than tone, body language, syntax, and other readily acknowledged nuances. Communication strategies that are portrayed so well here are an underappreciated art/aesthetic. Did I use "aesthetic" right? I don't think so. Figuring out what motivates others, applying appropriated incentive in that direction to align with your goals will always be a winning strategy--that doesn't always win. lol, nothing does Thanks again, good stuff

Because Littlefinger betrayed him. Jeoffrey (sorry if I misspell it) died, why? Littlefinger had huge role in it. Lady Arryn died, why? Littlefinger killed her. Sansa ended up married to Ramsay Bolton, why? Because Littlefinger arranged it and convinced Sansa to agree to it. And so on, and so forth.

Tywin was the most brilliant player, perhaps only superior to Tyrion by experience, but you should note Olenna Tyrell very much held her own against Tywin, that makes her the remaining major player of intelligence. Tywin was cunning but Olenna is cynical, Tywin fell because he was ruthless towards people who were close enough to put an arrow in him while taking a dump, Olenna isn't that over confident nor cruel, she is a real force to be reckoned with.

Lol that sweet Freudian slip. I just happen to love game of thrones and it seems that people like it too. Weird when the common folk like something you like, right? Building relationships based on first impressions and manipulations is unwise. It is very effective and efficient for jobs like sales and other short term relations. Otherwise its energy consuming and counter-effective once people figure you out or you are unable to manipulate them (besides the fact that is takes a solid narcissist to treat people like tools). If people don't do what your want don't manipulate them like a teenage girl, just negotiate or move on.

You are going down on one very slippery slope. Teaching people to persuade people is giving them the means to manipulate. In the end most people end up manipulating others to some degree. 7:50 In the books the issue wasn´t the jailer didn´t understand but more how he is distrustful of Tyrion because he was lied before. So he made Tyrion to write down a document saying he owes gold to him, and it worked. Tyrion had his freedom and the jailer has his the gold. 8:40 Nah, he knew what Bronn´s like. He already had a castle, lands, titles, even a wife (which by the way she was way different compared with the books version except of her intelligence), and knows very well he can´t defeat the Montain. So he wasn´t surprised when Bronn said no to be Tyrion´s champion again, specially when he doesn´t have nothing offer. He is a sellsword after all.

I would like to point out one flaw in your reasoning on how Tyrion's ways to succes could be used in every day situations: Tyrion has the huge advantage of being in a position (wealth and power) to be able to (almost) always actually meet the other person's demands/needs, while most people IRL do not. In Bronn's example (asking a friend to do something) most people wouldn't be able to capitalize on the options of money or land even if they figured out that's what their friend would want most. So missing in your analysis is that in order for the '3 tools' to actually work, you need a 4th tool: capital. Capital can be everything: political (land), economical (gold), social (friendship), pressure (pride), etc. Without this fourth one, the first three tools wouldn't work.
@danix8538
@danix8538 2 жыл бұрын
Close but I would say that capital is rather restrictive. That 4th tool should be resources(money, connections, stuff etc) or skills that you have which can get them closer to their goal.

Not bad, although some of these are fairly obvious. Further to this, I would add that Tyrion's genius is that he can do all this whilst under pressure for his life. Although that may have been a situation that he's been in many times in his life. We forget that Tyrion has grown up in a powerful situation with powerful people with every disadvantage, i.e. that he's been training for this all his life and if he didn't have those skills, he'd already been dead.

BAM! Truth bombs throughout! People can't be shamed anymore, so there really is no point trying to appeal to people's better nature. I feel like I've wasted my life trying to encourage people to behave better. This is your most compelling video so far.

Yeah, I pretty much gave up on encouraging people. They don't want to hear it let alone improve anything.

It’s so true, when I think about these principles I understand why they work and how I could use them. But I’m not yet at a point to use it in everyday situations. I think I’m on the right way though. Thank you so much for helping to me and so many others to learn and improve in these things! Most important lesson for me from this video: figure out what others want and using this information in a useful way ☺️

Apparently he wasn't as good at it as Tyrion since he got outmaneuvered by the Stark sisters.

The manner in which you have examined the character of Tyrian is quite brilliant. I've very much enjoyed watching.
