Welcome to another episode of Scrap Mechanic! Today I am exploring 3 Crank and Slider mechanisms I saw on a website full of cool mechanisms. A crank and slider is capable of converting rotary motion to linear motion or vice versa. It's similar to the Cam and Follower mechanism I featured in a previous video, but has a few differences which are highlighted in this vid.

@3:09 the mechanism is a variable ratio gear, except it's just based on friction instead of teeth. Depending where on the parabolic surface they contact, the ratio between output and input speed is changed

I vote to give you an A+ for mechanism 156. If you look at the animation, you'll notice that the small axel that slides within the arm doesn't touch the ends, you have, unintentionally or not, done the same.

You should build a fully working model of a 4-stroke engine cylinder with all the bits of the cycle animated, even using cams for the valves and such, I think many people who don't know how these common mechanisms work would really appreciate it.

mechanism 1: A mechanism 2: A mechanism 3: B (would have used a slightly bigger wheel ) next i nominate mechanisms:125,158,175, and the boss challenge 185. challenge 2: i would like to see you incorporate multiple of the "507 mechanical movement" mechanisms into a vehicle (obviusly they will be pretty big to fit multiple in one)

Hey Scrapman, what about making a CLOCK or a Watch with the previous Geneva Drive Mechanism thing, i did some testing and i figured out that actually the electric engine at some settings can rotate at 1 rotate per second so the clock might be possible and also it would be really cool if you would pull it off.

so #100, the quick return crank/ mechanism is used in things like presses, shapers, slotter and planers, even mechanical actuators and rotary combustion engines, the internal ones I think. It generally provides linear motion that's not quite in line with the wheel, such as being parallel with the wheel. This common mechanism is used because there are a lot of tools which need an action done in one direction of each stroke, powered saws for example, and the amount of time for returning the tool to its starting position takes less time. The reason I know this is that there's no reason at all, I just think machinery is neat and am loving this series.

These mechanisms are amazing, im sure you've seen the comments but ill add to it and say it would be really cool if you used a couple to make some cool creation. Perhaps a challenge using ALL of them? Or just a couple of your favorite useful ones? Or maybe a multiple Monday where there is a template mechanisms that you each have to copy and paste into a creation to accomplish some task? An ornithopter using the wings mod perhaps could be really cool to see.

#93 is pretty awesome for hill climbing. It provides the power of X number of pistons into torque for the wheel. Seems to work vastly better than just a bearing. #265 is a variable speed drive. By moving the pinion along the rail it will either increase or decrease the speed of the cone shaped object.
