Yes, Unnatural Vegan is right about oil and all the vegan doctors, with all their experience, education, research and knowledge are wrong. And the fact that they're curing people of their diseases with their advice against oil doesn't mean anything. What Unnatural Vegan does is pure sophistry. Her racket is to be controversial and disagreeable - by going after famous vegans, etc., using specious arguments and cherry-picked studies - to garner views. That is all. I get the feeling when watching her that she's "off", just enough, in her reasoning/thinking to where she's constantly going in the wrong direction and reaching false conclusions - all the while managing to do it in a smug, know-it-all, condescending way. At first, I thought it was innocent, just a natural byproduct of her brain's messed up wiring, but after watching more of her videos it became apparent she's doing it on purpose and she knows exactly what she's doing. She purposely uses negativity and contrived controversy to get views. She's like the Buzzfeed of vegan KZfaqrs.

How can you devolve that he doesn't have any knowledge about science? Every single video he produces is proliferated with references to scientific studies. What makes you think that you have to attend a university to obtain knowledge in science (or anything else, for that matter) when all the literature is available to anyone who wants to read it? Do you really assume that the only person who can gain knowledge from the study is the one who created the study? What, then, would be the purpose of publishing a study? Oh - and how do you steal a study that's published? "Stolen?" Really? PS. *actual. PPS. You must have missed the part about "Masters in Public Health," so clearly he's a degree in something already. ...I'm not sure why people can't learn from other people who have clearly studied a subject in more depth than they have themselves.

Cerenade Me A Master of Public Health (MPH) degree is a graduate-level program that emphasizes the practical aspects of public health. This type of program is designed to prepare students for their role in promoting community awareness about injury, violence prevention, communicable diseases and other issues that affect health and safety. Since research is not usually a primary focus in most MPH programs, students desiring careers as professors or researchers of public health should pursue a Master of Science in Public Health (MSPH) degree. the sad thing is this guy won't speak for himself and others have too.

A little while ago I believed I was gluten intolerant, I was tested for celiac disease and never had it. So I then thought I had gluten sensitivity, I saw 3 doctors who confirmed I was because there's no test so they were just confirming what I thought. I was convinced. I avoided gluten for about 6 months but would still feel sick sometimes. After seeing a fourth doctor I was then diagnosed with IBS and advised to go back on gluten. I ate the Low FODMAP diet (as well as remaining vegan) and probiotics, after a year of this I am now able to come off the diet and eat anything I want without having stomach issues. Moral of the story you may have stomach issues because of an imbalance in gut bacteria, it's not just as simple as blaming gluten. I'm not saying gluten sensitivity doesn't exist, but I am saying I convinced myself I was when I clearly wasn't, so if you think you are but are still having issues see a doctor and reevaluate. Good luck :)

Sourdough bread is way better for the digestive system since the process of slow fermentation develops the gluten so much more than the ones with active yeast! I'm a baker and I've seen people with gluten intolerance that have no problems when eating a sourdough bread!

I agree with the glyphosate hypothesis, this has become a big issue in my home country. But grains should be fermented for at least 24 hours in an acid medium (kefir, sourdough, lemon juice, etc) in order to improve the digestibility of the starch. This also partially degrades the gluten. I am pretty sure most symptoms of the so called "gluten intolerance" would go away if people returned to baking sourdough bread like in the old times.

Right : gluten intolerance is more than an upset stomach...but only ONE PERCENT of people in the U.S. actually have Celiac disease...I am pretty sure Mic is addressing the thousands of other people who are terrified of gluten for no apparent reason. Also, even Celiac isn't a rebuttal to veganism, I have no idea why it would be. Vegans can eat rice, quinoa, oatmeal, amaranth, millet (and many or most do) and don't have to have gluten in their diets. Some love seitan, but seitan isn't a necessity to being vegan. Tempeh is delicious and can be marinated in tamari instead of soy sauce. Obviously there are also non-grain starchy foods like potatoes, yams, and you can eat that tofu or potato taco with a corn tortilla instead of a wheat one.

A few years ago I randomly started having all sorts of digestive issues that rapidly worsened over a few months time. I had no idea as to what was going on and my doctor at the time thought it was basically all just in my head and chalked it up to stress (even though I was completely not stressed at this time in my life). I was tested for celiac and it came back negative. I tried cutting out different things in my diet and the longer I stayed off of gluten the better I began to feel. The fact that gluten was indeed the culprit despite my negative results from the celiac test was solidified in my mind after an extreme reaction. I had ordered sushi which was topped with just the smallest amount of the breadcrumb type crumble they sometimes put on top. I figured this tiny amount of gluten would be of no issue to me. Well I was dead wrong. Soon after my meal I laid in bed in too much pain to even move. My stomach had bloated up so much I looks to be 6 months pregnant. When my body was finally able to rid itself of what I had ingested lets just say it was multiple unpleasant trips to the restroom. So although I am not a celiac I do know for certain that my body handles gluten in the same way as a celiac ( I am textbook definition). I know there are many others like me now and I believe it has more to do with what has been done with wheat in the past. I watched the documentary "What's With Wheat" and it helped explain my issues and help make me feel less crazy. I highly recommend anyone experiencing celiac symptoms without the diagnosis to watch. Also anyone who claims that they "just feel better" when they don't eat gluten or thinks its "healthier" not to needs to get over themselves because some people like myself have actual violent reactions to it and they make us look like fools.

Regarding grains/beans/legumes (which are all seeds) and 'antinutrients'. Here are some helpful facts regarding consumption of whole grains/beans/etc. (I'll not mention processed grains such as white rice or white wheat as they shouldn't be consumed in my opinion and most of these anitnitrients reside in the outer layer of a grain). There is the phytic acid and enzyme inhibitors, tannins, complex sugars, etc. which are all broken down during the process of soaking or fermentation. It's the enzymes with start the sprouting process and they must be kept 'dormant' until conditions are good. This is why grandmothers soak their grains in warm water before cooking them and why dough is fermented, even in non-leavened foods. It starts the sprouting process. People often have major flatulence after the consumption of ill-prepared beans and legumes (lesser-so grains) for example, but if they are soaked until the sprouting process is triggered, this problem will be reduced to nearly nil. [Myself have had this problem, especially with lentils, but if I soak and rinse (a few times per day) the lentils until I see small sprouts coming out of the lentils (about 1mm) before cooking them, my flatulence problem no longer occurs.] These anitnutrients are present as part of the seed's life-cycle and are there to prevent sprouting until conditions are good, i.e. rain has washed and soaked them and the sun has warmed them up. Also note, vitamin content increases during this process, especially B vitamins. So, the real problem with people who have so-called intolerance to grains is due to either not consuming whole grains and or not preparing them properly. My friend's mother, from Asia, soaks her rice for at least 8 hours before cooking it and changes the water at least a couple times. 25 years ago, I asked her why she did that. She didn't know, perhaps it was because it made it taste better or made it fluffier, it was knowledge passed down to her from her mother, and likely even her mother and grandmother did not know. Many generations of people pass on knowledge such as this, I guess it's called Traditional Knowledge, but their ancestors did know the reason for these actions, it increased digestibility. celiac disease celiac sprue Nontropical sprue gluten intolerance intestinal malabsorption disorder sprue nontropical sprue gluten sensitive enteropathy celiac sprue adult celiac disease All caused by 1. a generally poor diet and poor digesting in general with very poor gut microbes etc. and all the other digestive probs. which go hand in hand with a poor diet. (antibiotics, for example, will contribute to ill digestion and can take at least 1 year to recover from). 2. not preparing their food properly. Phytic acid, tannins, enzyme inhibitors, complex sugars, cellulose, etc. are broken down and it takes about 8 hours, which explains the 8 hour rule of my friend's mother. We can also add some other factors to the ill-digestion of grains such as new breeds of grain which are high-yield but low nutrient, grains which are not harvested at the right time, grains which are not stored properly or treated properly from harvest. We may also be eating our grains without fats which may help to absorb fat soluble vitamins such as A and D etc. found in grains. So, 'gluten' is not 'bad' for you or anyone, these people are merely ignorant. Everyone with gluten problems already have poor digestion prior to discovering their gluten intolerance (and if you talk to these people they typically have a whole host of food intolerances and allergies etc.). Gliadin and glutelin are broken down (perhaps not fully) during the fermentation process. This process is sped up with the addition of an acid and are partially soluble in ethanol with is present in fermentation. I would surmise that such food passing through the stomach would come into contact with acid, then wold undergo a nice warm slow fermentation process in the intestines and any pre-consumption fermentation would only add to the digestibility of the food.

You should make one simple video for meat eaters and people who have common misconceptions about veganism. The vast majority of people who I talk to are very uneducated about / unaware of veganism, factory farming, diet, concepts, etc. I was too before I came across your channel. If you made a video without many references to studies that would overwhelm people and simply covered many of these misunderstood concepts it would be very helpful. A lot of times I want to share your channel with people and tell them to check it out because you convinced me to go vegan and your videos skip all of the BS and include raw data, but not everyone is willing to sift through your channel and sit through these videos. I was able to go fully vegan cold turkey and I don't eat any mock meat because I don't even miss it, and after learning about veganism and the meat industry it was a simple and logical decision for me. However, people are generally close minded and creatures of habit (at least it my experience and when it comes to vegansim / diet / ethics). Simply by going vegan I have convinced several people to alter their diets and even attempt going vegetarian, but they are not dedicated and they are unwilling to do the research. For me, going vegan was a shift in philosophy, mindset and lifestyle. For the people around me, all they see is the positive effects of changing my diet, and they want those effects for themselves. Even though that's great, I wish I could convince people to go vegan or at least learn more about it without offending them or debating them and then having to Google proof of my points to back them up. I'm not sure if you already have one, but a simple video like this, one that I could just show someone and that would dispel myths would be very helpful in trying to convince people to become more conscientious. Thank you again for making these videos, you are helping to change the world with this channel!

I'm surprised your research didn't bring up FODMAPs! Wheat contains high amounts of the sugars, fructan & galacto - oligosaccharides, which ferment in the gut, triggering IBS for around 80% of its suffers. A lot of people (myself included) feel better cutting out bread because it massively reduces the levels of these in their diet. That said, I wouldn't underestimate the profound effect of all these agricultural processes gradually distorting our microbiomes for the worse 😒 Probably the reason 11% of the global population now has IBS 😔 Congrats on the book btw! x

I went GF for digestive issues, when I started adding in gluten free products the digestion issues came right back! That's when I started researching and found the WFPB lifestyle and feel way better now! And I can eat gluten :) And I sent that study about glyphosate to my doctor last spring since she was seeing so many of her patients feeling better going GF.

You can soak wheat overnight it water, it will get rid of the fructans by the enzymes in the wheat. This is similar to soaking beans. It also allows the wheat to cook better. Wheat and barley are very nutritious, but just like beans, they can cause problems for sensitive stomachs unless you soak them.

I know my gut intolerance to wheat does not come from gluten because I can eat einkorn flour. But if I eat normal bread I get diarrhea, inflammation throughout my entire body which causes extreme pain which can last for days. A simple screw up from a waiter can cause me to be down for the count for several days. It is such a PIA Edit: also note it is not from yeast because I make my einkorn bread with yeast

I am a gluten and yeast intolerant vegan for sure (was vegetarian initially until I learnt more about the dairy industry, also felt I never reacted too great to dairy products either and noted improvements in sinuses following eliminating them, always used to get blocked ears every so often and other mucus issues). Being from New Zealand I initially was not sure one could survive a healthy life without meat or dairy, however, transitioned over a few years to vegetarian and now over the past few years finally don't eat eggs anymore (concluded there is no such thing as chicken friendly egg industries after doing the research). I ate sandwiches for years and always had mild skin issues. When I moved to Australia the eczema became super bad and disappeared totally after stopping eating bread, as did the bloated stomach etc for the most part. I heard one theory regards yeast that made sense, if you eat yeast and wheat (carbs) and other sugars in mildly warm climates they ferment increasing the alcohol levels in your body making you drowsy, irritating your stomach and drying your skin out which can make you prone to eczema. I still get eczema and bloating if I eat refined grains, including even white rice and rice noodles, and eating yeast free flat breads. One time following eating at a Belgium Cafe I got a once in a life time massive reaction which made my whole body itchy and covered in a patchy rash, including the palms of my hands, which lasted for a number of days. I could only put it down to the unpasteurized beer (ie high active yest content). For this reason I believe food compatibility is a very individual thing. Personally the meat substitutes based upon yeast extracts would be best approached with caution by some. Personally I will not seek them as a core part of my diet regardless as I have plenty of whole plant food based options that I love the taste of and work great; nuts, legumes, seeds etc Keep up the excellent insightful well researched and referenced works Mic! Thank you for your work,

What about spelt? I find I don’t have such a reaction with some spelt breads. Also some sourdoughs. Also I am growing my own sourdough and it is growing with the flours I’m using. The person who started it may have not started with organic flour, yet it was healthy. Could it be that batch didn’t have glyphosate? 🌱

Missed this one, it's brilliant of course... thought I'd seen them all...here thanks to a link provided by Carina Ekstöm. Raised the question of crop dissecation crop on your "What's the deal with red meat" by Dr. Mike video. It seems as if crop dessication is done to more than just wheat, oats, flax, beans and a few others are all candidates. So I'd say perhaps expand the warning to these crops as well if you find you are having issues... or just buy organic, which is what I did immediately after reading about crop dessication, after hearing about it in the comments section on a Real Truth abou Health video.

Guten free for 12 years, then vegan for 4. Watched this video, tried organic wheat berries, and got all the old symptoms: puffy eyes, stuffy nose, constipation. Edit: It's possible the berries were under cooked. Only about 2 hours in a ceramic pot, but the texture seemed plenty soft enough to eat, like boiled corn. Maybe if I soaked them over night and cooked them all day it would have been different, but I'd rather not risk trying it again. Also a farmer was spraying nearby around the same time.

Hello. I would say that soaking is a must before cooking grains as berries because of the antinutrients. Wheat has other components that can trigger sensitivities, like ATI proteins, fructans, wheat germ agglutinin. Grains could even be sprouted before cooking. That being said, barley could be a good alternative to wheat for people who are sensitive to it but not celiac. Sorry for my english. Best wishes. Greetings

Also, keep an eye on all the store-baked breads in places like Morrison’s and Sainsbury’s. Morrison’s include dairy and egg in all their store-baked bread *and they don’t include this in the ingredients list* they just have the “may contain” disclaimer. In the UK, Co-op’s store-baked bread is vegan.

the vid is great and so well explained as always. and to answer your question: yeah we did stop bying bread because it was made from refined wheat (and of course you never know what they add to the dough to make taste that addective). we started to consume millet, unprossed wheat and barley, and never felt any better except for our mom who suffers from a weird scratching after consuming it (still investigating). when it comes to pizza, pasta, pancakes, cakes, we ask someone to mill it for us and we make our own bread at least we're safe on a side note, lovely book and so happy to hear that you're preping a master in public health (it encourages me to start a business related to health and the vegan life style )

The first possible cause in the end still is because of a gluten intolerance, just developed through leaky gut by herbicides. That's what I got thanks to doctors (too many courses of antibiotics in my case, often not even the recommended treatment for the issues I had), and it didn't end with gluten.

Congrats on the new book/ebook! While I agree with most of your video, I am dissappointed in your brief description of glysophate (specifcally, Roundup) being used as a crop desiccant. The only regions that do this in the US are North and South Dakota, and even there it is not done on the majority of crops. (Snopes has a really good article on this topic, including links to in-depth pieces done by The Huffington Post and others; the Snopes team even called a number of farmers raising wheat and asked them about it.) It is also important to know that while Roundup *can* be used as a desiccant, it takes several days to have the desired effect. In contrast, there are a number of products on the market specifically designed for crop dessication, which do the job in a significantly shorter amount of time. In terms of both expense and efficiency, it just isn't practical to use Roundup as a dessicant on a massive scale in the US. That out of the way, could you please take a look at a video PBS NewsHour just posted today, titled "Should plant-based meat replace beef?" I know you'd probably say it should, but I'm curious to know what you think of it: m.kzfaq.info/get/bejne/eceDZN2UnbnTh6M.html
