Thanks for this video. Personally, I would love to see more SPD-SX content. I just got mine a few months ago and I'm struggling to find a way to integrate it in my playing. 3:58 There is at least one other way to turn off a loop. Setting up a mute group with another pad. I'll sometimes do that with an intro loop. Put a crash or a bass drop on another pad, put it in a mute group with the loop, then use that pad to kill the loop and carry the song into the next section.

Hi Tim, very useful video's about the SPD-SX you're posting! Thanks, many of them helped me setting up my SPD-SX! Two things I found to be very useful: 1. Importing audio and building kits on my laptop through SPD-SX Editor. Sure, it costs € 39,- But I found it totally worth it. All the editing and reordering kit etc. is so much faster than to use the built in interface. 2. Upgrading the internal memory. It is a bit of a struggle to open the SPD-SX up. But with the new micro SD with 32 GB capacity, I don't have to worry about insufficient space for loops, tracks etc.

Thanks for the video Tim. Do you know if there's a way to skip to the next kit in the kit chain by hitting a pad, instead of having to press the + button? For example if you played a backing track and the track has ended, you can quickly hit a pad (eg pad 4) to load the next kit and then hit another pad (eg pad 1) to start the next backing track and click track?

Great stuff Tim, I love your channel! Does the back up save all the kit with the previous assigned pads and levels? Also have you ever experienced backing tracks running from the spdsx freezing or interrupting for a second? It happened often with my spdsx recently, forcing me to stop the track and start again during the performance since everything goes off the click :(
@TimBuell
@TimBuell 5 жыл бұрын
If you are having this happen, try bouncing your backing track out as a mono mix (if they are currently in stereo). That might help, it has for me and others in the past. I know it isn't ideal as running backing tracks in stereo is always a little better for whoever is at FOH, but the Roland seems to handle mono files easier.

@@TimBuell this is a big down fall. Way behind time with this big machine that is unable to do time stretch on a perfect loop. Might as well walk with protools and do time stretch with elastic audio.

www.roland.com/us/support/knowledge_base/201974309/ You can change the tempo of a loop using 'Tempo Sync'. I know because I loaded a 128bpm loop onto a 120bpm kit. Then changed the kit tempo to 128 to match the loop and the loop was sped up to 136 or so. I think if you're going to use Tempo Sync, it's important to have the kit tempo matched to your loop before assigning the loop to the kit. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

I’m having inconsistencies with volume levels when importing different samples into the SPD. Sometimes the samples are too low in volume when they are at 100. Then there’s others that are too loud when at 100. Is there a specific way of doing this? How do the pros do it to have countless samples playing them throughout an entire set without inconsistencies? Either way, thanks for all the geek stuff man!
@TimBuell
@TimBuell 5 жыл бұрын
Hey Luis! So - most professional acts have their own engineer running front of house and he or she likely knows their set in and out. So, in the past for me, sometimes you level stuff out as best you can - but the sound engineer just knows that on "XYZ song" the samples are super low and they will ride the fader up to be louder. Other than that. There are a few things you can do: 1. load all your samples into Logic/Garageband/Pro Tools/etc and normalize/maximize them. 2. Instead of thinking of bringing all your sample UP for each kit. Find the quietest sample in each kit and bring down the level of the other samples until they all match the one that was quieter than the rest. Make sense? Kinda hard to type a good answer in the comments. haha

Hey Tim Thanks so much for all the SPD-sx videos. They are so helpful. One question: When you back up the whole Roland to a thumb drive, like in this video, does that clear the Roland? Does it take everything off and put it on the thumb drive or does it “copy” the info? Leaving it on the Roland and copying the same info onto the thumb drive. Hopefully it leaves it on there. I just want to backup my Roland in case there is ever a problem with crashing etc. Thank you for all the info and knowledge! CT
@mattryan6886

It leaves the info on SPD-SX, just makes a back up of the memory of unit, then you can label your back up with name and I put the date in there as well to help keep track of my back ups

Great video bro! I’ve just got my new SPD-SX for next gigs and I have a little question...I need to pan kick and snare triggers to sub L and R. I made it but, is there a function to copy these settings to all kits? Or should I manually pan left and right each kits?
@TimBuell
@TimBuell 5 жыл бұрын
Hey! Great question. Unfortunately you can't copy those settings to any other kit/patch without also copying the sample. But if you have a "template" kit with everything panned the way you want, you can use the "quick menu" and "copy kit" and "paste kit" and you will have that exact kit copied over, then all you have to do is replace the sounds for the next kit you want. Make sense? haha. Kinda hard to explain via comments.

Thanks for the video! I just picked up an SPD-SX so these have been really helpful. One quick question: is there any way to blend loops together a little more seamlessly? I haven’t found any info on this yet unfortunately. I sampled the first couple bars from a song and want it to loop endlessly to serve as a backing track, but certain samples sound choppy at times when they restart. Not sure if there’s a function to fix this but any help would be appreciated! Keep up the great work.
@TimBuell
@TimBuell 5 жыл бұрын
Joe Koza what I would do for that is create a seamless loop in a DAW (Logic, Pro Tools, whatever) and then load it on. Editing it in a DAW will give you a lot more control than sampling into the Roland.

I also export from a DAW (I use Garageband), but in your case you could edit the sample to loop better. Look in the quick menu for "wave start/end" then fine tune the beginning and ending until it loops just the way you like it. It might be tedious but it keeps you from having to mess with a computer.
@koejoza
@koejoza 5 жыл бұрын
Tyler Baker Thanks for the tip! I was trying to move through that menu the other night but it was confusing me a bit. I’ll have to take another look through the manual. If the end of the sample could just flow more naturally into the beginning when it restarts, that’d be great. I’m sure I’ll be able to figure it out eventually.

Thanks so much for your tips! I'm a novice and want to learn a lot more about the SPD-SX. I've had it for a couple of years and barely use its potential. My biggest issue is finding samples and tracks that are 16 bit 44.1khz. is there an easy way to convert files?
@TimBuell
@TimBuell 5 жыл бұрын
Yes! It sounds more complicated than it is. But all you have to do is throw all the samples you want into iTunes. Make sure iTunes is set in the preferences to "import as .wav file" (you can turn it back to mp3 when you are done) - and then highlight them all and covert them to .wav in the menu. Basically. Use iTunes to convert them to .wav an iTunes converts them perfectly at the stock settings iTunes uses. Fair warning, iTunes updates/changes like 4 times a day and I haven't upgraded my iTunes in (for real) 4 years. haha.

hey I have a Alesis Strike Multipad that i bought because of the amount of memory it has ... how much memory for kits does the Roland SPD-XS truly have to make/ store kits ? Can you really fit enough kits and sounds for live shows and performing? the diff color lights might be an idea that Roland incorporates one day... does make it easier remember what's going on with each pad.

Rodney Harris I’ve never run out of space. But if having space is an issue you can always back up your kits and swap out full load outs for different gigs.
@mattryan6886

I traded up from SPD-SX to strike multipad recently. Alesis has released 2 firmware updates that dramatically increased functionality, kit chain, usb back ups, better hihat control, internal sample manager, 16,24 bit .wav, samples will turn click track on/off, A/B sample change with foot switch. I love RGB lighting for when it’s dark at gigs, I made up a color system so I can look at lights and know exactly what sample each pad is( red snare, blue BD, yellow hihat/cymbal, green backing track, purple synths, percussion orange,) footswitch (1) panic/kit advance (2) looper start/stop. The one thing I miss from SPD-SX is the EFX section. Strike Multipad has tons of good EFX’s and 3 banks for parameter change a-link knobs. I have not been able to master using those a-link knobs like I did on the Roland. Im looking at buying a HPD-20 as my next pad. I did not know they did sample import. Between strike multipad and HPD-20 that’s a powerful mini-kit combo. The less gear to haul speeds up my Load in/out times. Asking a Bassist to help carry a flight case and they act like their arms will fall off!!!!

Can someone help me? I’ve encountered a glitch with my new SPD-SX, that I’m using together with two RT-30HR triggers. The shopkeeper has sent to me another one but I encountered the same problem on the new machine… I’m starting to think that the issue is intrinsic to the SPD-SX in general; otherwise I’m very unlucky. The system crashes for a short time (1-2 seconds) and then returns to normal (a kind of false triggering is audible, accompanied by a noise). The defect exists using both my samples and stock sounds. I exclude that it is caused by the trigger settings, since the triggering itself is more than good; moreover, I tried to change every parameter, without any success. I have already updated the system to the latest version available (1.08). I tried to disable the polyphony, but the problem recurred. I’ve even replaced the cables, changed the electrical outlet and performed the factory reset. I’ve also tried to use other triggers. However, the problem persists. Lastly, I’ve seen on the internet that someone has encountered and solved this issue doing a deep format of the SD card or changing it. What do you think?
@TimBuell
@TimBuell 4 жыл бұрын
Hm. You can always try a different SD card, but I've also heard of stuff like this if the actual memory inside the unit is bad. Have you tried the same sounds while not using the external triggers? Does it only happen when you use external stuff? Also - you can always submit a ticket to Roland via there website. If you can't figure it out they SHOULD be able to - although their customer service isn't the best.
@SimpleMinds13
@SimpleMinds13 4 жыл бұрын
@@TimBuell Hi Tim, thank you very much for your interest :) Thankfully, a guy who lives nearby told that he has solved this specific issue with a different SD card. He explained me that this is a know issue, cause Roland - within the new units - has changed the integrated SD card with a more powerful one. It is therefore likely that I received two older units. Tomorrow I'm going to deliver the SPD-SX to the same service center which has replaced his card. I will keep you updated as soon as I can! As regards your questions, the glitch occurs even with integrated pads & sounds. Lastly, Roland support has been pretty much useless so far ...
