3 STEPS to get your Bass & Drums Sitting Better Together
In this episode of MakeMineMusic, Marc Daniel Nelson demonstrates a 3 part trick to
getting your bass and kick drum to sit together better. Sometimes in mixing these two
elements together, there are issues in the low end that cause unflattering side effects in
phase and low end glue. With this simple three part trick, watch as the low end gets
bigger yet sounds more clear and focused.
Happy Mixing!

3:42 sounds really great - however I was wondering why the focus frequency is so high (220Hz) should it not be close to the fundamental to the kick's resonance frequency to grab it there? 10:30 putting torque on other tracks at other frequencies isn't really using it as it was meant to - it just works mainly on the focus frequency and retunes that. there is not need to put it on other microphone tracks, especially not with different focus. It's not designed for that.

Great work Marc...I often watch your clips on our meagre home theatre as the sound is pretty average but interestingly really sorts good mix from bad...and there arent a lot that sound great but just the little bits on this really shine and difference is huge This is pretty much my go to, esp for more open acoustic band recorded stuff...but some small details really crystalized. 1. I used spectral ducking and noticed you used wb which took the wobble out of the the kick/bass overlap and you could use a lot less 2. QUESTION: Im trying to stop just buying plugs for 1 hit wonders...the Ozone def made a diff but its just doing a targeted process...would be good to understand WHAT its doing so the actual process can be reproduced and knowing why tends to produce further detail when developing mix techniques eg Ozone...really dont want to buy more plugs when it would be better to create using what I have BTW when I go in the studio and watch...stuff that really hums, like this topic...the mix is great and using the sub bass tools here (where I actually feel it in my chair), the difference is sublime Thanks again Marc, you seem like a genuinely sincere guy which is evidence in your manner and craft

I would love to know exactly how to tune a kick track. technically. More about how to tell when its out of tune- and by approximately how MUCH. Ive always wondered this. I thought about using a HPF with a steep slope and a sharp Q, and sweeping slowly up until I get something resembling self-oscillation of the fundamental. I havent actually tried that technique its more theoretical- but I know tuners dont really work too well. Perhaps a transient designer to “extend” the envelope and then pitching it up- allowing me to use a tuner? Any insight on this would be appreciated. You really could make a whole video on how to identify drum tuning issues- its a big one for a lot of us amateurs that can make a HUGE difference

There is a question that always i am trying to find an answer for it. How some people like Marc on this video, record their video with playing DAW and speaking in the microphone simultaneously without leaking what the speakers are playing to the microphone? Having the leakage from the speaker to mic make the result muddy and less stereo. But as we listen for example to this video we dont notic anything bad.

First of all, I've dumped my Waves plugins due to their anti-customer fiasco recently. Second, I've seen a bunch of these youtube recommendations to use a wide band compressor to duck the bass with a side chain from the kick. What I don't hear them explain is a justification for ducking the ENTIRE bass guitar just to make room in that ~50Hz range for the kick drum. A better solution is to use a dynamic EQ like Pro-Q3 or Kirchoff to duck just the low end of the bass guitar from a side chain of the kick but LEAVE the low mids and mid range of the bass guitar alone. This still makes room for the kick to punch through but without taking the entire bass guitar away.
@Producelikeapro
@Producelikeapro Жыл бұрын
Indeed. The best idea is to listen and see what you prefer the sound of, a simple duck of the entire signal for a nano second or by using a dynamic eq just the low end.
@Producelikeapro
@Producelikeapro Жыл бұрын
I was talking to Bob Clearmountain about this, one of the only downsides of the ability to use dynamic ems etc that make everything so perfect is, mixes are becoming 'so perfect'. So I would definitely listen and see if the desired result is what you want.
@marcdanielnelson317
@marcdanielnelson317 Жыл бұрын
@@Producelikeapro this here.. I agree.. I like the effect the bass "ducks" as a whole. Instead of hyper focus on just the bottom, it feels to perfect for that space as i like the side chain "ducking effect" on the bass and it adds to that sound
