When it comes to writing fight scenes, you shouldn't just focus on describing physical action, like how characters punch and kick, as that alone can be pretty boring. That's why I'm sharing 3 tips for crafting fight scenes and battles to keep readers on the edge of their seats.

Just wrote a chase-to-fight scene in my prologue so I was really happy knowing that it already followed all of your tips! Thank you for your awesome videos, just found out about you yesterday! I hope more people get to view your educational content.

I always want to write down my own fight scenes. To be honest, my fiction is pretty cartoony, and most fights I’ve written are quite over the top. To specify, my main character does martial arts to fight against his main antagonist and most enemies. He balances his fighting styles, from grappling and disarming while using Krav Maga, to throwing flurries of punches and flashy kicks as he uses Karate, Kung Fu, etc. In terms of intensity, the main protagonist is quite cunning and swift to dodge many rapid attacks before counter striking, and he breaks bones and launches his foes in the air whenever he gets furious. My main inspirations were from video games, and seeing bunch of fights inspired me to think of how different characters do their combat. Motive wise, he’d fight to save his family members.

I've spent most my summer studying Chinese martial arts just to make a fight scene more realistic.

What i did for my most intense fight scene was put each character at a different level of exertion. 3 hunters, one monster, out at sea. Two of the hunters are fighting earnestly, but the youngest one, while taking a similar hit the gray skinned hunter took, gets broken bones. The gray skinned one was just knocked back a little. The third hunter is shady and doesn't seem to be doing as much which younger one doesnt realize but the gray skinned one does and she calls him out mid fight. Àt one point the young and gray skinned hunters are told to retreat below deck for their safety and the third hunter casually captures the monster. This, being the first fight let's the reader know: 1 power levels 2 gives a small hint to what the third hunter is hiding from the other two 3 lets the reader know that even though the younger hunter is new to this world that they are capable of far more than they thought and are most assuredly not human, as they believed.
