At the beginning i used memrise app. And i can say that it was helpful for beginner. After that i started to watch youtube videos which is russian video with subtitles. For me, Listening and following subtitles is the most useful method. You can learn where is the stress and how it spells. If you see a word for many times you can learn it in a short time. I perefer mostly vlogs because i feel that i have to use the words i learned, in my daily life. Appreciate you, i’ll keep you watch. 👍🏼

The other day I was waiting outside a hardware store going through a Spanish Duolingo exercise in the car with the windows down. A few Spanish speakers started giggling at me while I was saying something totally goofy! It was definitely bad timing, lol. But, I think it’s good for immigrants to witness people studying their language. Somewhere in the back of their minds they will remember there are people in their new community interested in communicating in their native language. (I don’t run across that many Russian speakers while I am practicing.)

That must've been a fun (and sightly embarrassing) situation. I know that I'm always flattered when a foreigner shows effort and desire to learn Dutch. And I've known experienced it from the other side when people appreciate it when I speak Russian. I do think for some of the more common languages, native speakers might be a bit tired of feeling like practice dummies for foreigners trying to learn the language though. It would indeed be great if you could find a native speaker and you could help them with English (or your native language), and they could help you with Russian.

Some of the Apps you talked about probably use the same principle as working with flash cards. Great video, you really nail down the mistakes many students make and give very useful advice!

Most of the vocabulary apps are indeed digital flashcards. But they work better as you can turn on the sound, and it's easier to do spaced repetition.

'you can utilize a forgotten method from the last century'...and with that I feel my body rotting in the grave already. I have never stopped filling very small notebooks with foreign vocab words...

Don't worry, I may have overdramatized that part a bit. I still use pen and paper for lots of things!

Wow..I just subbed! You know, listening to you IS useful! I have just started learning Russian but I believe that the more you are exposed to the target language, the more you absorb and learn , even if you don't want to. Our brain gets sound patterns, rhythm, intonation. I need a starting point, I need to at least pick up some meanings. Some words in Russian are similar to words in other European languages I already know, so that's what motivates me and helps me the most. Reading and writing require boring repetition in my case. I have a good memory for sounds and pictures but not for words, even though they are technically images too. Some people process both simultaneously, I don't, or not all the time..sounds come first, always. Thanks for sharing, much appreciated! And congratulations, your Russian sounds fabulous! ☺️

Input is definitely very important! If you haven't yet, try watching Russian series. You get a lot of practice that way.

What is the best way to learn new vocabulary? I've been learning by reading and line of russian words and saying them. Then I cover the English part and then trying to remember what the word means. Is that a good way to do it?

I prefer to use the app Anki, as it's simple and does spaced repetition well. But you need to find a good flashcard deck for it.

Hi. Thanks for your videos. I just started learning Russian and find it super hard to memorize the vocabulary. I downloaded Anki bc you mentioned how it helped you. Now my question: I have a list of words I would like to learn first. Do I have to put these into Anki manually or can I upload that list to Anki from my laptop? Thanks and keep up the good work.

So you can choose a couple of options: 1) manually create your own deck on anki from your own list - it's a bit more time intensive, but you learn more by doing. Downside is that you don't have audio that way and your thumbs are going to hurt after adding a couple of hundreds of words manually. 2) if you're handy with spreadsheets, you can also import a CSV file to anki. Saves you work, but you have your own list. Albeit without audio. 3) download a pre-made deck (this one has audio: ankiweb.net/shared/info/2037470492). This deck starts a bit slow, but has audio and a good list of words.
