I hope you enjoyed my review of 30 Days of Night! The comic was written by Steve Niles, and illustrated by Ben Templesmith. The movie adaptation was directed by David Slade, starring Josh Hartnett, Melissa George, Ben Foster, and Danny Huston.

The art reminds me of Grant Morrison's Arkham Asylum. I liked that the vamps spoke their own language. I feel like creatures as ancient as vampires would have an old language.

TJ The artist on Arkham Asylum is Dave Mckean, notable for his covers of Sandman. I met Ben Templesmith at a con and mentioned that his work in 30 Days reminded me of Mckean and he said that that was indeed the intention and that he was flattered it came across as such. He was really nice and got my comic signed just like the one in this video

One of my favorite horror movies of the past decade. This movie was brutal and frightening, also Ben Foster is always fun to watch. I've been wanting to read the comics for a while, i'm more convinced now. Great review, as always.

The vampire language was definitely an interesting choice. Most vampire fiction these days tries to make vampires as human as possible but 30 Days of Night went the complete opposite direction. Not only do they look far from human but the language makes them seem truly alien.

Have you tried reading Junji Ito's work? It also has some adaptations for TV and Cinema but they never capture how creepy and scary the Mangas are. I truly yhink you can enjoy them, and maybe you can start with his short stories. Anyway, great video!!!

I actually prefer the movie, I think the story did need the extra bits and bobs added by the movie. The movie suffered for only one reason and I feel it could have been even longer, but the comic is so short you'll read it and wonder if you're missing pages. Comic feels like the writer had an idea, knew how he wanted it to end, but had no clue on what to put in the middle. The comic solely feels incomplete.

Hi Vampirianna! I watched this movie few years ago and I liked the concept of the vampires a a brutal predators on human beings. But why the vampires did not attack systematically house by house, feeding on their victims and then, burning the houses. The shot in which the stranger is walking in the snow and the big boat (that looks like as a creepy castle) is behind him, is splendid! By the way, an excellent review.

Hi, Marianna. I have a question which I don't know if you already have answered yet. Do you think it is possible for a filmmaker to make a movie that overpasses the quality of the book (or comic book) from which it was based? I mean, without modifying the source, but through a proper use of cinematographic language. Stanley Kubrick used to do that, but he changed quite a lot of the book story.
@ImpressionBlend
@ImpressionBlend 8 жыл бұрын
+carmaj156 Hmm... I think so. I don't think it's possible to make a 100% faithful adaptation, just because of time constraints a film would HAVE to leave something out and modify a bit, unless the book or comic book is really short. But I totally think it's possible for the on-screen adaptation to surpass the source material.
@carmaj156
@carmaj156 8 жыл бұрын
+Impression Blend I think the same. However I've seen that normally happens with short stories, but not with novels, meaning the great ones. Dracula for example had an amazing film adaptation from Francis Ford Coppola. But even him could not avoid the temptation of "retouching" some of the characters. If he only kept the script and main character motivation just a little closer to the original the movie would have being beyond perfect. But I haven't seen any director able to transcribe a novel into cinema without messing it up at least just a little bit. But I guess that's always gonna happen since cinema is an art , it cannot be fully restrained just for the sake of being faithful to the source material. Regards.

Great review! Okay I'm so buying that comic now and holy crap that scene with The Stranger could've been bad ass in the movie! I definitely would've liked to see Ben Foster do more with that role since he is such an underrated actor! Also Vincent should have been played by Wilem Dafoe since he played the classic vampire of Nosferatu in this indie horror film called "Shadow of The Vampire". Overall I still enjoy this movie, saw it in theaters when it 1st came out and I think they captured the atmosphere perfectly!! The characters definitely needed to be fleshed out more for us to care about them. I give it a 8/10

+Impression Blend I don't know. Not until we find a way to prevent disillusioned young muslims from radicalising, and help them to fully integrate into our society. These are very complex problems, and I don't see any solution in the foreseeable future. We'll have to live with it. I do see some positive things: people spontaneously helping and comforting each other. I hope it remains that way, and we feel more united. Anyway, thanks for the video. It helps me take my mind off things.

I'm not 100% sure about this, but I think they're reason for having Marlow burn the town down - or attempting - was because the movie tried to have it implied that they've done it before; that they've gone to other towns and killed everyone then burned it town to cover their tracks, but you make a great point that they could've implied/shown that better to make viewers understand. You make me want to get the comic

NEXT TO THE ORIGINAL "SALEM'S LOT", "30 DAYS OF NIGHT" IS MY FAVORITE VAMPIRE FILM ! I LOVED THE WAY THE MOVIE STARTED OUT AS A SOFT GOOD NATURED HOLIDAY SEASON FILM. AND THEN GRADUALLY LET THE TENSION AND FEAR RISE AS THE HORROR INCIDENTS BEGAN. IN FACT THE ONLY PROBLEM IS THAT THE TOWN'S NORMAL POPULATION WAS OVER MATCHED. I CAN'T SEE ANYONE SURVIVING THE VAMPIRE'S ATTACK UNLESS THEY COULD USE THE HISTORICAL WEAPONS SUCH AS CLOVES OF GARLIC AND CROSSES. FURTHERMORE, ONCE THE TOWN'S COMMUNICATIONS WERE CUT OFF, OUTSIDERS SUCH AS THE STATE POLICE AND FAMILY RELATIVES SHOULD HAVE ARRIVED TO INVESTIGATE. MORE NORMAL CITIZENS SHOULD HAVE SLOWLY TURNED INTO VAMPIRES WHICH WOULD HAVE HAD THE FILMS AUDIENCE IN TERROR AS THEY WONDERED WHO WOULD HAVE CHANGED NEXT. THE TOWN SHOULD HAVE HAD A COUPLE OF HIDDEN UNDERGROUND SHELTERS AND A FEW MORE POLICE OFFICERS. A MULTI ETHNIC GROUP OF TEEN AGE CHARACTERS MIGHT HAVE ATTRACTED A LARGER TEEN AGE AUDIENCE FOR THE FILM, AS IT DID FOR "TWILIGHT" . THAT GREAT SCENE OF SHERIFF EBEN USING THE ELECTRIC SUN LAMP SHOULD HAVE BEEN THE ENDING. ACTOR ANDREW STEHLIN STOLE THE SHOW AS THE VAMPIRE ARVIN. HE PROVIDED INSTANT TERROR IN EVERY SCENE HE APPEARED !!!! "30 DAYS OF NIGHT" IS THE BEST VAMPIRE MOVIE OF THE DECADE !!!!

i wish hollywood would adapt real vampir from romania, because the real ones are nothing like the movies, they are much more creepier and there's lore, for example the movies make it seem like they are scared of garlic, but in reality garlic has nothing to do with them, and it's used as protection, but for something else (there is a certain date in which all evil walks the world) and people use garlic to mark a cross on their windows and doors for protection, but that's not for vampires, for vampires you open the grave during the day, you open the vampire up, you take their heart, and then the family member has to cook it and eat it, or others used to bind the vampire, this is one of the reasons why people have found so many old graves in europe with people tied up in them

If I don't, I won't hold it against u. 😃 LOL! Seems to be a shortage of good vampire flicks that are classics like, the ORIGINAL 'Fright Night'! Probably one of favorites!(not the remake, which was ok) or 'Lost Boys'!

+Impression Blend A "must have", if there ever was one.... love watching it every 10/31. The nightclub scene is my fave! Kinda cheesy 80's. but way cooler. "your so cool Brewster!"

What are you talking about?The fact that the vampires speak their own language made the movie even more horrific.I actually loved that fact.

The vampire language in the movie is logical. Not everyone can cater to our language. Over half the humans on the planet don't speak english. Why would ancient vampires know our language? How about all the other hundred languages? Them speaking English would have been cheesey and unrealistic. Would aliens speak our language, or their own language? Foreign languages are always more intimidating. That's why it works rather than not.

So to you the whole Vampire language thing is in fact not an ingenious way that makes the creatures seem more atmospheric and mysterious of their history, but it just comes of as "cheesy" Yeah, um, I don't think so mate, that is a really unfair criticism against something that is actually original to the vampires as a whole
