In the last episode, we dove deep into a puzzling mystery as we meticulously disassembled the engine, revealing the presence of sludge and stubbornly stuck valves. The burning question this week is: Could these discoveries be the key to the low compression issue we've been grappling with? Join us on this exciting journey as we work our magic to solve this mechanical puzzle, bringing this piece of history back to life.

You guys ever hear the saying, “your in the hot water might as well take a bath”? You were so close if you had pulled the pistons and checked the condition of the rings and if not replace at least make sure they free. Now that the valves are sealing good even if it did run it would smoke like it’s on fire from oil going past the old worn rings.

Totally except it ain't our day of the month to bath so we gotta wait. Good points thanks for comment and support

Rings and sleeves and just as well change rod and main bearings since you’re in there. Expense not bad 👍

Rings could be stuck but you had a little compression before you did the valve. I think you should have ground each valve and seat with the valve that went in each spot. You did not make the valve and seat match each other and now that don’t seal at all

I have a 1951 8N that I paid 800 for and had to put 400 into it just to get it to run to see what all was wrong with it. It runs great but the rings are wore out, it smokes but is not burning a great amount of oil. I put all new valve assemblies in it. You can actually turn the engine just by turning the fan after the the engine gets warmed up. I am going to do a rebuild on the engine this spring. These things can have wore out rings and still run reasonably well with lots of smoke. Our old ‘49 was the same way. I did a complete engine rebuild on it 2 years ago.

Hello Fellas; Although things didn’t go your way with the engine, Getting rid of all that nasty crud was a 100% improvement both inside and outside. Those piston rings must really be stuck for that little compression. The only other reason for the very low compression may be the valves still not seating properly or as a long shot maybe holes in the pistons, But I think the rings are probably the culprit. Did you notice how much oil pressure that was on the gauge when you were cranking the engine? You may want to double check the oil pickup just to be safe. Otherwise the tractor is looking a whole lot better.

Possibly stuck rings and not sealing, along with cylinder sleeves that may be scored up and need to be replaced.

Rings ! Probably stuck ! Should have changed them since you already had it torn down. Been sitting too long but will run if you do the piston rings cylinder hone or replace cylinder sleeve if it has one. Don’t give up on it ! You guys can do it !

It definitely has sleeves. We are debating as to if we should put more money in it. We will probably do a little more investigating next week. Thanks for the comment.

Those rings likely had a ton of rust that you blasted away when cleaning? I mean, your method of lapping is definitely faster than I've ever seen (haha), but they should have a nice new seat either way, right? Good luck, fellas!

You should have pulled the piston and rods out while you had it apart and checked the rings and or replaced them.

This will 100% run again. These engines are way too easy to fix. Get some new rings and touch up the sleeve walls. While you're there, put new bearings in too. Hank will be plowing flowerbeds before spring 🤣🤣

Think you are supposed to seat the valve that’s going to go in the hole aren’t you. Not some random homeless valve just passing through
@JMRRebuilders
@JMRRebuilders 6 ай бұрын
Probably so. But we did place all the valves and put liquid on top of them to see if them would leak down. They didn't. So I'm thinking the valves could be better but are not our top problem. Thanks for the comment Drake.
