Watched this movie with my parents and husband. My mom pointed out that our protagonist and, Zafir (?) Have many similarities. They have the same moles, reading habit, bouncing leg, love for knowledge, and an appreciation for the treat the djin gives them. My mom also thinks that Shiba shares a likeness to them but she didn't really expand why. Anyway she theorizes the these three are the same soul reincarnated that always find themselves entangled and in love with the Djin. She thinks that Shiba actually did love him and regretted betraying him so in her next life she'd meet him and fall in love. But due to Zafirs trauma from her current life and past life her and the Djin left off with yet another tragic ending. Since the Djins and the protagonist souls were separated from eachother 3000 years ago, they have longed to be together happily. In this modern lifetime they still long for eachother but the difference is that they're not separated by a bottle and time but by his survival. They still get their happy ending since he can come and visit her :) I think the reason why her first serious wish was for him to love him is because their souls are meant to be. She says so herself. If anyone knows about twin flames their story is a prime example of one. I deeply love this movie and it speaks to my soul. Instantly bumped up to being my favorite movie:)

** spoiler alert - - - - - - - - - - - - Your mom is very smart, I watched it with my friend who pointed out that and many other parallels. All the stories are hers. She explains that she can only read feelings through stories, and from her beginning lecture you kinda get the foreshadowing of the gaps in her knowledge that are filled with her stories. When she first explains television to him she gives a little bit of scientific explanation then says she doesn’t know everything. Thats one of the problems zafir had , as she struggled to solve things even after asking for all knowledge…then there is the literal groundbreaking laws of physics she wrote on paper, and inventions by known historical figures that we know couldn’t possibly be zafir, but that’s because its just a representation of what the main protagonist knows. There is even a shot of the red thread near the end when she is in her basement, its the same red thread from her first story when Solomon imprisons him . I definitely had to watch it again to see more things!

I believe it is the story of a relationship between mature adults in the modern dating world, caring helping each other heal from their baggage of past harmful relationships. This video analysis is the best I've seen so far, but I'm dying to find someone developing this theory. I'm just way to persuaded of it, it seemed obvious metaphors all over the movie, and yet, I'm feeling like the only one who watched it in this manner. Alithea tells us that this is a true story, but we wouldn't believe it, so she told it as a fairy tale of sorts. The bottle is indeed the metaphor for this willing imprisonment, the shutting oneself off, representing the unprocessed grief of the Jinn for his painful love experiences. Trough the metaphor, methinks the "real" guy represented by the jinn would've ve gone through: 1- Sheebah = betrayal. Just like Alithea's Jack, Sheebah would've been the Jinns girlfriend or wife, who was seduced by some other guy, breaking his heart and getting him into the bottled-up state, a long grieving period without being able to love. Gülten is a married woman he got involved with. She is this lively ambitious woman who uses him to boost her own ego since her husband is so absent, but when threatened with loosing him, she prefers to "die" (maybe cutting contact with friends and lovers, acting like a good little housewife) without sparing a thought for our jinn feelings. The fat woman stands for rejection when trying to approach someone while he was feeling lonely and looking for someone to patch the void left by "Gulten"s abandonment. Zafir is a strong successful woman. She's a match for the Jinn's intelect and competence. However, her own history of abuse means she is very sensitive to anything that remotely resembles being controlled by someone, and our Jinn is a brilliant guy. He feels he has to contain himself (his needs, his desires, his discontentment) so she can be in the center and not feel threatened. However, he eventually finds himself trapped (depression, maybe) as the relationship dies out. And finally, Alithea: this woman who relates to a lot of the Jinns pains and falls in love with him. She is that woman he really wished he could love, they could have a beautiful and, for once, healthy relationship. He really cares about her,But he can't choose to love her romantically, and eventually she realizes that this guy is bending himself backwards trying to be there for her, however impossible he finds it to be happy by her side. They accept their conundrum as they give up traditional notions of marriage and become these special friends in a more mature, free, independent lovers... which reminds me of Sartre's "Nausea" take on love. Anyway, that's my take on this story. When seen like that, a lot of the things criticized about this movie just seem to vanish, as you can embrace the idea that all the magic/science stuff is just another metaphor for allowing oneself to take risks and have another shot at love (magic) as opposed to confining oneself to live only those experiences one can fully control and understand (science, as in Alithea's beliefs in the beginning of the movie). I'd love to know im not completely crazy in having this take on the movie. Does this make sense to anyone else?

I think it's all in her head. People think the neighbors spoke to him but they were just indulging her. The neighbors had made a previous remark...that she always speak to herself & they call her crazy. ... And then, there's the soccer ball in the end. I Don't think Djinn really kicked it. It bounced from the lamp post back to the player. That's why the player said 'did you see that!?!' But made No reference to another person kicking it. Lastly, she mentioned that her imagination interferes with her life once a longing becomes apparent. That seem to be evident during the film. In the end she was sitting on a bench....and noticed a couple being loving, a mommy & child moment on a beautiful day at a park. We concur she felt lonely and a longing was present. And that's why the Djinn showed up. The same for her everyday life, he was usually at home waiting for her....after she had a long , lonely day. She obviously desired to have someone to go home to. She was even seen eating alone at a cafe on a rainy day...again, a longing was present (why eat alone, if someone is at home waiting??!). I do believe her imagination helped her to slowly adjust & interact with the community. You have to realize, she also narrates the story. This is all seen from her perspective & Fantasy. Even with Enzo , she was completely wrapped up into turning it into a reality, but the more she did, the more reality was taking her out her Fantasy. That us why she felt silly , burned book, and let go. It was the same w/ the Djinn, the more she tried to forced it to become real & normal, the more reality was coming into play, so she had to let him go. Just like a dream....as long as you are fooled into it... you stay in, but the moment you realize you're dreaming and try to control it, you wake up. In the end.... just like Enzo was always there when she needed him, so would the DJINN be. Its a coping mechanism that's she learning to live a balanced lifestyle in. That way her loneliness and imagination wont get the best out of her. Hence the headaches...

Is there someone who thinks the same! I was wondering if Sheba could be also reincarnation to Elithea cos of her swallowing in neck. It's obvious Zefira was reincarnated in Elithea too with her legs and how she read with finger... But was wondering about Sheba too. So Im thinking it's actually the same soul of Sheba from thousands years ago when Djinn got trapped into lamp, till they finally reconnect again & again and "solve their hearts, souls & curse".... Question though, and I maybe biased but whenever the genie was imprisoned by Solomon, I felt like he’s alluding to the Abeahamic religions, Judaism, Christianity and Islam seeming to imprison freedom from the world by through marriage, culture, nd all throughout history. In the genies first story, Queen Sheba was a queen but felt the need to change something magical about her, her hairy legs, to appease Solomon, the second king of israel, is known as the first wise king, so I’ve interpreted Shebas marriage to him, as being woman’s first relationship with men forcing them into a subservient role where most woman historically had relationships like Fefir( sounds like Fear) and her husband, who even she had a magical genie, or, probably a powerful imagination like Althea, but couldn’t get freedom In her world and felt trapped in the great gift that was her mind because she was a woman.

Just watched this film last night. Great review! I hadn’t put together the symbolism of the relationship with the neighbors & how that aligned with her relationship with the djinn & her inability to connect with her community, which likely was what was causing her misery that she had tried to avoid. Somewhat parallels to Zefir’s story, being too intelligent for her “community” or the life that she was forced into & not being able to find contentment. What a beautiful movie! Thanks for sharing this!

Hey man! Loved your video. Saw this movie two days ago and while I loved the first half, I didn't really know what to make of the second half. I think I was too fascinated with the whole Djinn lore and wanted to dive deeper into it. The ending also felt very abrupt for me. It could have used a bit more breathing room imo. BUT your video really gave me a new perspective on the movie! While I still dislike the rushed ending, having a more thorough look on the themes and messages of the movie itself makes me a appreciate it a lot more. (Spoiler Alert) I have a few theories. My theory as to why The Djinn was pained by the electromagnetic waves in England but not turkey is: when the Djinn was in the bottle at the airport and went through the x-ray machine it somehow increased his sensitivity to electromagnetic waves or cursed him or caused him harm in some fashion. The movie emphasized the scene at the airport and made it seem like Alithea was just paranoid for no reason. When they got home The Djinn didn't come out of the bottle immediately, which subtlety shows that he was affected by the x-ray even though it looked like he wasn't harmed. (This could also further explain why he begins deteriorating. He didn't deteriorate when he was with Zefir for a long time even though she didn't make a third wish. A bit of a stretch I know but the first theory still stands) Another thing I just realized in the airport the main security guard that stuck the pencil in the bottle had a lot of screen time (relatively speaking) where he was very prominent on camera. The first thing that stood out to me is that he looked very similar to King Solomon (the one who put The Djinn in the bottle in the first place). And it just so happens that the guard is the one who caused the Djinn strife now just as king Solomon did hundreds of years ago. And in the scene when she is leaving he has somewhat of a sinister look on his face almost like he was aware of the Djinn. I think it was a very coy way of hinting at reincarnation and showing the parallels of humans even through thousands of years and maybe even shows the power of king solomon. The Djinn spoke in great detail about how powerful and magical he was. Maybe king Solomon put some spell on him to be tortured for 3000 years when he first bottled him up. (the last bit is another stretch I know). I love movies that are a catalyst for conversation and debate and force you to ponder what you have witnessed. Art in its purest form causes a stir. Kudos if you read all that

Great synopsis. The one fact that I disagree with you on is that I think the Djinn is real due to the fact that when she offers the pistachio dish to her neighbors, they acknowledge his presence. I went back to watch the reactions and it appears to me that they are looking up at a taller individual when she offers that. That being said, I look forward to more of your viewpoint on future films.

Just watched this yesterday afternoon. It was interesting for sure but I'm not sure the ending - of having the Djinn fit himself into Alithea's more modern/structured world - really reconciles the tale well. I feel like the fact that her imagination is powerful enough to make things real could've been expanded on and built out more, and that her own lore is left not feeling satisfying for that. Instead of wishing to be loved in this very conventional way I wish she'd instead asked to know about her own powers/imagination or her own origins because it seemed to be hinting that she has her own magic. Maybe she could have wished for the power to make her writings and stories real or create companionship that way. Maybe she could have simply asked for a travel buddy of the Djinn and explored the world. Her dreams were so small in that way that instead of exploring all that the world could offer or creating her own legends, like she seemed to want, she contented herself with not really reaching for the stars like she could have. Not a bad movie, gorgeous cinematography and interesting but tragic tales, but I do feel like because Alithea doesn't have as richly storied a life both before *and* after that it ends up a little lopsided in the end.

In the end.... just like Enzo was always there when she needed him, so would the DJINN be. Its a coping mechanism that's she learning to live a balanced lifestyle in. That way her loneliness and imagination wont get the best out of her. Hence the headaches...

Well Jose that’s because love is actually an inside job even when we love somebody it’s actually love inside of us the whole thing happens within us even though we attribute it to the other human being. When we come to that point of realization we actually carry the joy of love within us everybody is actually looking for divine union which cannot be found in another individual and that can only be found within ourselves and our true connection and relationship with God cosmically.❤️

Nice review. I saw this yesterday and will go again later this week. This is the best film I have seen since the Tom Hanks/Michael Rhys/Chris Cooper biopic of Fred Rogers, which had me in tears for hours. (Michael Keaton should have been in that film. He would have demanded a retake of the opening scene.) Unfortunately, I think that Three Thousand Years will not be a box office success or win awards because the public is so stupid. The special effects and marketing may bring in kids, and this is far from a kids film. I think that critics will praise this film to no end, and that is deserved, but fine art, like fine wine, is not for everyone. We live in a McDonalds/Walmart world. I predict that it will age very well, like Lebowski or other cult films that initially failed but now appear absolutely classic.

I wasn't sure how I felt about this movie at first. I had to watch it a second time. I actually enjoyed the story telling element within and of itself. There were moments where I appreciated how confused I got whether all this is in her mind, "talking to herself", her looking back ...or looking in the distance a little too long.. (they do a great job blurring the line with the actress ). It very well seems to be so as the Jinn is a personification of her struggle and evolution in her own life. ( I really love that scene when she's traveling with a new bottle that has to be kept open out of respect to the jinn...worrying that its being put through a scan (the bottle in fact seems to change with each "owner") ....when the Jinn is supposed to be able to travel whereever he wants to see the world without restriction. BUT I can also appreciate it as a fantasy piece where the Jinn is in fact real and he and Alithea are going through their own growing pains. Now when I broke down the many concepts being brought up in the movie....I have to conclude I enjoyed it as a whole. I will seek out the book too. The philosophical key points... between the main charater and Jinn are quite stimulating to consider.

Cinematically, this film was wonderful, but the story seemed to fall just a little bit short, at least for me. I loved how the story unfolded and the Djinn's journey from one bottle to another, but the stories were not as fulfilling as I hoped. It was not a bad film, but I was hoping it was going to be really good, which it just wasn't -- for me. Not to mention, the final takeaway, at least for me, was that the entire event might have just been in her head -- and the end of the film seemed to prove that for me. Alethea was a woman who was already having mental health concerns coming into the story, so who's to say that this encounter with Djinn was not a part of those mental health concerns? Then, she has an episode where she faints, so who knows how severely that effected her mind. Alethea is a scholar who was already familiar with the region and the stories that come from there, so she was already armed with the knowledge that could concoct this entire event. It's just a bit ambiguous, so it leaves it too open for me. However, the end is what is most telling for me....When she puts away the box which contained Djin's things in the basement, it all seemed more like a person who had come to terms with, and reconciling her mental health issues. And, seeing him in the end, could just be confirmation that she is not completely well, but she does have a handle on it.

I have a theory, what if the Djinn's stories are not real? The same way storytellers tell false tales to teach us a lesson, what if he was doing the same to our protagonist to teach her a lesson? And tapping into historical moments she'd recognise is similar to many storytellers doing so to ground their stories and make the audience buy into them? What if the Djinn's life has only ever been as a storyteller? What if he was sealed into a bottle, thrown into the sea and just opened up to teach people a lesson -but has only ever crafted stories to dissuade them?

Alot of the features the Jinn had was referenced from the Islamic teachings about jinns, e.g Jinns being made out of fire, how there were so many jinns leaving and interacting with some humans in the times of king Solomon and so on, I found that quite interesting.

Desire without pursuit can be seen as a state of longing or wanting something without taking any action to attain it. In this sense, desire without pursuit can be seen as a passive state of being, where one is content to simply want something without actively seeking to obtain it. However, desire without pursuit may also be interpreted as a state of unfulfilled potential. If one has a strong desire for something but does not pursue it, they may feel a sense of regret or dissatisfaction with their life. This can lead to feelings of frustration or even depression. In some philosophical and spiritual traditions, desire without pursuit is seen as a form of attachment or craving that can lead to suffering. According to these traditions, it is important to cultivate detachment and non-attachment in order to achieve a state of inner peace and contentment. Overall, desire without pursuit can be seen in a variety of ways depending on the context and the individual's perspective. While it may represent a form of contentment or detachment, it may also represent a missed opportunity or unfulfilled potential.

I really loved this movie. It was so beautiful. Although the ending did leave me really perplexed. It fell apart at the airport. I took away that it was the djinn longing for love and the end as he was turning to dust he was dying from her wishing him to fake his loving her. As he explained, "Lovecraft." The movie should have been called "tethered." As each character was tethered to a toxic "love"

In the final scene of the movie when she is on the park bench she is distracted by a man playing with a child behind her. I understood this to be her ex husband, and therefore it is no coincidence that it is when the Djinn visits her. She feels the pangs of hurt but her imagination of the djinn appears to guard her against complacency and falling back into her imprisonment. She is able to move on and look forward to other things in her life.

Movie was indeed a pleasure but I'm struggling with one thing. So, in the story of Gülten the Djinn has its oblivion because she was not able to say the 3rd wish. Now, Alithea only made 2 wishes (to love her and then to go back where he belongs) but oblivion did not happen 🤔 or did it happen for everyone but her (because she was so into stories she could keep seeing him)?
