320/400 AMP Meter Base Install With Parallel Service Lines

I couldn’t find much on KZfaq or the internet for that matter on parallel lines with a 320/400 amp meter so I decided to do this short video. I have a new shop and I will be building a new home so I required 200 amp panels on both the shop and house. This was inspected so it should be correct. This is for informational/teaching purposes ONLY. I will not be held responsible for your actions.

Your neutrals and grounds should be tied together at the meter box, from there connect each disconnect. From each disconnect to each panel, and yes at each panel the nuetral is floating, not connected to the box. The meter box is not bonded in your case because you have pvc between each disconnect, it need to be bonded to be at the same potential for all metal parts.

Yes, that is absolutely correct.

I'm a retired industrial mechanic with about three years of college including electrical. It's a different world considering industrial electrical and residential. I was racking my brain trying to figure out his neutral ground bonding. You saved my life. It would be a great video, except it's also wrong. Thank you friend!

Maybe I misunderstood. Why is the meter box and disconnects not bonded to each other? They are bolted to a metal channel on a steel building. Does that not count? What would need to be done?

I really appreciate this! I am doing the same exact thing (400A split 200A shop, 200A house) in a few months. Building a log home with a 1200SF shop in the Ozarks. If they let me, I'll be building the shop first to set up a work area for building the house.

Yep. That's exactly what we did except it's a regular house and not a cabin. My wife and I are building the house with the exception of the concrete slab and septic tank that we had someone else do. Too old for that for sure. So we built the shop which is a Versa-Tube steel building and put all the electrical on it. It is 20' from the house so it makes it easy to bury that line. We had to dig down 36" for 620' of parallel lines, so that was fun. After that, we set up our tarvel trailer and hooked it up to a sub panel outside the shop next to the shop disconnect (not shown in this video) that is fed off the shop and is made for RVs. Then we hooked up a sewer line to the septic and now we have plenty of time to build our house. I found that having the shop is nice for keeping things out of the weather and will be great when I start working on details like cabinets and so forth. Right now we are at the point of finishing up the roof sheathing. Funny you are in Ozarks as we left Kansas City to build in Georgia. Land was much cheaper here and we don't have to deal with snow any longer. Good luck on your build.

@@pwm001 I'm having two issues getting started: 1) I found some very nice lots around Table Rock Lake but they have HOA and overreaching CCRs. 2) I have to sell my current house first as the new house is going to be my last and I want to pay all cash building it. I think that's great that you're getting out of the snow! Right now I'm in the high desert of east mountains NM and we get tons of snow. Southern MO has very mild winters in comparison but they do get snow for a short. I've been vacationing in the area for 50+ years now.

Why the 2" nipple thru the back of the meter base and into the panel in the garage?
@pwm001
@pwm001 6 ай бұрын
Lol. That was a mistake. I originally went straight through to the panel inside, but external disconnects are now required.

Great video Phill, do you happen to remember where the meter base came from?

Yes, it was provided by the power company. They had supply chain issues, but I got very lucky and they got one in at the very time I needed it. They do have them on eBay but make sure it’s UL Listed. There are a lot of no-name Chinese brands out there. I’ve had a Chinese made RV sub panel catch fire on me. Luckily I caught it in time.

Where im at the power company does not allow a seoerate ground to even go into meter base. Also they cities do not allow ser in conduit
@pwm001
@pwm001 2 ай бұрын
Those are very good points and you're right, I did need to move the ground so it went under the meter base. That is the power company's rule (Georgia Power) and not code. As far as the SER cable, since I stipped the outside insulation away when it went through the coduit, it was allowed.

Hello, I'm planning the same set up. What are the brand names and models of the 400 amp meter base and 200 amp disconnects. Thank you !

Hi, the disconnects are "QO 200 Amp 2-Pole Outdoor Circuit Breaker Enclosure with QOM2200VH Breaker" from Home Depot and the meter base is a "Milbank 320A 4T BYPS OHUG", but unfortunately I don't have the exact model number because it was supplied by the power company and now has the tamper proof lock on it.

@@tomfinley8382check with your power company. Even if they make you supply the meter base they will have a list of brands and part numbers they will allow. And be aware 400/320 meter bases and enclosures that have the meter socket and one or more built-in breakers are expensive and often back ordered.

You may not be able to come up through the bottom with the utility power as you are sharing the same space with yhe load side of the meter. You probably will have to come from the top down to the line side of the meter.
@pwm001
@pwm001 5 ай бұрын
Actually they already did it on the bottom right like I mentioned in the video. And they squeezed all 6 wires in a 2 1/2" conduit! They were not too happy about that, but they got er' done! Lol...

I only hooked up the shop so far, but it is Type SE Style R 600V XHHW-2 AA-8000 AL 3/C 4/0 AWG + 1/C 2/0 AWG (UL) E222531 Priority Wire Sunlight Resistant 23372-18. So that is 4/0 for the 2 hots and neutral and 2/0 for the ground. Hope that helps.

@@pwm001 yes sir, it’s the connector that would be rated for it, that have some other type connectors that work for rigid also, but in the NEC in the wet locations section you’ll find the part about using waterproof connectors on this type of equipment. You had a very nice install though in this video . Just figured I’d pass some info along, I didn’t know about it until an inspector mentioned it

Gotcha. Good to know. Not sure why they don’t require it here in Georgia, but I think they should do better with water proofing than they do
