I'm into the long-range (and longer) here in Europe. I have a few magnums, including the 338LM and 375CT; and I've got quite some time on other ones as well, such as the Barrett and AI .50's and various makes of 408CT, 30 RUM, etc. I regularly shoot out to 1100m (1210 yds) or so, and a few times a year out to 1.6-2.2 kms. Most times I don't take a magnum with me to the 1100m range. I prefer to use a medium calibre for the 700-1000m type ranges: cartridges such as the 6.5 Swede, 6.5 CM, .308W, 6XC, 7.5 Swiss. I have a substantial collection of DMR type rifles that I use to 900-1000m, mostly in .308W, 6.5CM and even 5.56. They are great challenges in the 500-900m range scenarios. It's just a great thrill to hit a target at 900m target 7-8 times (from 10) with a tricked out G3 or at 700m with an SPR12 in 5.56. It's just not sporting with the big stuff. The only REAL downside to the medium calibres is spotting your bullet splash. Although, I will admit that drilling a 1500m target with a cold bore shot from a 408CT really brings a smile to the face.

308 trainer in tandem with a 300 WM/NM is hard to beat and I think one of the few things the military got right. Stock up on 30 cal projectiles than can go either way in a pinch and the only thing that really has to be different is powder. Magnums are the answer when that kinetic energy is needed or when the hit probability has to be maximized.

I know that used to be the primary trainer/duty set up, but with the external ballistics of the CM almost exactly matching the WM wouldn’t it be a better choice for a trainer? Elevation dope is much closer with the CM than the 30hate meaning holds are nearly identical. I’m far from a 308 hater, don’t even own a CM, just seems like it’d be an easier substitute.

@@soonerfrac4611 true but the barrel life is also worse with the creed. From what I’ve studied it seems like 308 is good for at least 5k. 6.5 cm is about half and the 6mm are about 1/3

@@soonerfrac4611Well seems to me it's called a 'trainer' for a reason. It's supposed to teach you. A lower bc projectile from a very consistent 308 that doesn't need rebarreling very often can teach you how to hone in all your minor ballistic details that you'll ever see with a creedmore at reasonable ranges. It's these failures, misses and lessons learned that allow a sniper to make hits way out at 1600m with his 338 lapua or 300 win mag. In other words a 308 allows you to miss more than a 6.5 creedmoor qnd therefore learn better ballistics and wind reading skills

My TRG-42 in .338LM doesn't string, although I don't really push it with quick shooting, because I want to keep the barrel around. I've had it out to over 2200m although it's really struggling much beyond 1600m. With long-range rifles (we start at 338) we try to limit strings to 5 or max 10 shots to keep barrel life reasonable. Also mirage is a killer. I'd strongly suspect the after-market fluting is causing problems with the TRG--factory fluted barrels are stress relieved after fluting for this very reason. After-market fluting most likely does not do that.

@@9HoleReviews 11:15 - Your data on the triggers is inaccurate. I've had a pre-2013 and a much newer TRG42 (plus three other 22s). The data on the triggers is inaccurate. The post-2013 triggers have all been superior, despite the 2013 being very well "broken in". Frankly, it's not even close. That said, it's funny you mention the horizontal stringing: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/gtiUjd15s7iYnas.htmlsi=E3_7uWaIPHhrhq9s I documented this years ago (Accuracy International AXSA .308 - very hot, high humidity). Stringing right to left as the string progressed). At the end of the day, heat affects, harmonics and harmonics affect trajectory. In my experience, the stringing is worse with .30cal bullets.

I think the magnums have a place in the longest range shooting at targets. They are also really good for improving first round hits at moderate range. I also think that part of the allure is getting a good hit and good terminal effects on large game animals. I don't know if you have hunted elk for instance but getting a reliable clean effective kill on an elk at extended range (beyond say 400 yards) can really appreciate the additional kinetic energy from a magnum cartridge. I have killed 4 with rifles and all have been relatively close with a 7mm rem mag 3 of the 4 were hit through the heart and of those 3 elk they ran between 30 and 80 yards hit through heart with over 2500 ft lbs of energy. The only one that didn't run an apperciable distance was a quartering hit that broke the off side shoulder which stumbled tripped went down and didn't get back up. A little more background is that an elk can go an awful long ways with a "good" hit. It's not unusual to hear about elk running nearly a 1/4 mile with a hit in the lungs from a full power rifle cartridge. They go down pretty quickly but elk are marathon runners of the animal world and walk/jog at a 6 to 8 minute mile pace and sprint at a 2 or 3 minute mile pace. So a 30 second adrenaline filled sprint can put them hundreds of yards from where you shot them. Throw in a mediocre shot and give that elk a minute of sprint and 4 or 5 minutes of just their normal traveling pace and that elk can cover a mile making recovery a serious challenge. Magnum cartridges can help make a 490 yard from good to excellent and from mediocre to good with the lower wind drift in particular and a flatter trajectory helps too. With that said most people don't shoot a 300 magnum hunting rifle well because of the serious recoil. I honestly think most .300 mag shooters would be better off with a .270 they arent afraid of and most don't shoot well enough to outrange it's terminal performance on elk.

Henry your absolutely right on the previous owner fluting the barrel being the highest running contender for the stringing, almost no one who does cheap after market fluting stress relieves the barrels after doing it, similarly to when initially boring and again rifling the barrel, if not stress relieved you will be guaranteed to get heat stringing. AI years ago put out their findings on barrel profiles and fluting barrels and what impacts they found they had on accuracy consistency and trends, they came to the conclusion that unless you are only going to fire 3 rounds and wait until the barrel is room temperature again, that fluting is significantly detrimental to consistency once heated unless significant expense is put into stress relieving the barrel, and they don't find it worthwhile unless the customer specifically asks and pays for it. Its the main reason why AI for years only ever offered their medium bull no taper profile barrels, they heat/cool evenly and consistently better than any other form of profile without weighing 15 tonnes. We really should start developing thermal sleeves/shrouds for ELR rifles akin to what main guns on MBTs have, they drastically improve the thermal profiles of barrels and ensure completely even temperature shifting regardless of time, weather, sun exposure and heat/cool both the top and bottom of the barrel evenly, predictably enough to be able to program for it FCS ballistic computers.

I am always impressed by both of your shooting skills but watching you hit targets with ridiculously consistent precision gets slightly repetitive. I enjoy the stories about how the GIGN rescued a school bus full of children or learning about your assessment of the pros and cons of the US Army’s new 6.8 mm infantry rifle. @@ljubomirculibrk4097this isn’t entirely true for many different powders. Some (mostly spherical) powders have extreme temperature sensitivity, enough to notice and need to compensate for when shooting mid range. It’s generally accepted and I’ve seen first hand that the extruded powders to include powders used during WWII era are more temp stable than much of the newer powders. It is true, that there are many modern powders that are much more stable than the old stuff but, a lot of the new stuff is less stable. Oddly, the main powder used during the 1930s on through WWII, (4831) which was used in nearly everything from artillery to the 30.06 cartridge in the M1 Garand is very temp stable. I use some still that was made prior to war. It’s older than my parents and still consistent. Much of the military powders for general use are spec’d to a higher level of stability, however some specialized (read sniper) cartridges are still sensitive.

@ljubomirculibrk4097 it is true that today's powders are much better. We still had to account for anything above or below 70 degrees. That was standard data for shooting a howitzer. Our standard data was that if there was no wind, no coriolis effect, all atmospheres were the same resistance, and spin drift from the rifling didn't exist, among about 20 other factors that have an effect on accuracy. Think about it as trying to shoot a 1,000-yard target with a red dot compared to a scope with range and windage markings. Even though the effect is minimal on today's powders, for those seeking the ultimate in accuracy, then it does have an effect. Not enough for an average shooter, but for an expert, it could cause some cursing.
@OFFICIALUND

@@ljubomirculibrk4097 It's still important for a huge percentage of smokeless powders. Ie. IMR4064 (powder used in FGMM .308 175SMKs) has 1 fps change per degree. So, 50fps delta between 40 degrees and 90degrees (I've tested this, thoroughly). H4350/Varget are much better, but a lot of the viht powders are also temp sensitive.

Warm/hot propellant to increase velocity is real. I working for US Army ARDEC in the late 1980s. At shoots at the Aberdeen Proving Grounds, 120mm tank rounds were preheated to get the max velocity possible in the tests. Some applies for rifle propellant. The effect may be smaller but do a comparison test with the same lot of ammo in a cold damp Texas winter vs. a hot humid Texas summer. There will be a velocity difference.

US Forces now issue a mrad kit with 340 nm 300 nm and 308 barrels. Its transit case weighs a ton lol. Unless the terrain and target require it their m110s in 6.5 cm wich SF uses, are more than suitable, plus if you have to fight in and out of the target area its miles better than having a mrad. Big Army has hks in 308 also. For civilians the magnum sniper rifle rigs are really just bragging rights. Figure in bbl life ammo costs even reloading for them isnt cheap.

It will be interesting to see how higher pressure cartridges (based on the 80,000 psi 277 Fury case) compare to traditional magnums. They will be able to reach the same bullet velocities with less propellent (higher efficiency) which should reduce the total amount of heat transferred to the barrel. The big question is damage to the barrel. There are some who think that more rapid burning will actually reduce the damage to the throat (reduced abrasion from less unburnt propellent) while others believe that barrel life will be reduced from the combination of higher pressures and potentially higher temperature at the throat.

I had a very early TRG-42 in .338 Lapua while I was in the military and had absolutely no heat issue. That was actually a huge difference to the AI .300WinMag that was ultimately chosen (and now is going to be replaced with a new .338).

i'm curious on how quickly you've gotten the rifle heated up. I also wish that the previous owner to my rifle never messed with "customizing" the barrel. It really is upsetting when people mistreat their rifles like that.
@TheRealRedRooster
@TheRealRedRooster 6 ай бұрын
@@9HoleReviews It is quite a long time ago, but I don't recall it to "heat" up. It got warm, specially in practice, but even then, didn't get to shoot that many rounds consecutively. Certainly 4 5rd mags did not cause any discernible issues. Used the same rifle three times "in anger", once in rather cold weather in northern Iraq and on my last call up in Mali in 2016. At the later, this was in March, which is already quite toasty in the southern Sahara and it worked again for at least 4 mags over distances between 800m and 1200m just fine, with maybe 3 or 4 rounds missing during an about half hour firefight... It was a very early model of the TRG-42, modified from a TRG-41, with a rather thick and fluted barrel and also needed at some poiint additional work to fit those (British) oversized rounds, which became standard on the later models. This all made the rifle quite a bit heavy, that's why some other guys didn't like it. Unfortunately, I am demobed due to age by now and won't be called up any more. Would be rather curious how the new Haenel G29 compares, though that is apparently only issued to KSK and KSM and everyone else might be stuck with the AW/AI in .300 Magnum.

I’ve got a 300wsm that I like a lot. Loose very little performance with short magnum. The shorter action rifle being a little handier, lighter. It being a hunting rifle though I could imagine the thinner barrel getting extremely hot if a lot of rounds are put thru it. Don’t really want to find out because of the ammo cost lol.

Who can afford to shoot .338L? Also yeah inside 1000m, overmatched magnums make it “to easy” to hone your skills. Yes for legit sniping sure overmatch is great. But for training, .308 and 5.56 are going to teach you more, and more economical to shoot. Save the magnums for long range hunting, sniping and extreme distance shooting.

Size of the bullet driving band is a extremely overlooked factor in barrel heating. Isn't just the hot gasses heating the barrel. 98% of the hot gas never contacts the steel & the brass case absorbs most of the infrared heat load.

Fluting a barrel that doesn't come from the barrel maker fluted, is usually a bad idea. IIRC most barrel makers will finish lap the barrel after its fluted because the process of removing the metal from the outside can actually effect the inside diameter because of built up stress in the steel

I asked Sako if there were any data for how fast you could shoot the TRG 22 in 308 before the barrel took permanent damage. They did not want to answer that. Now a 308 is not magnum, but how fast and how many shots can you shoot on say a TRG 22 before you get vertical or horizontal straining? It would be very interesting to see. And yes please, take a trip east and go shoot the magnums proper. Even better, try to recreate verified long range kills with max like 3 shots using different guns 😍

Heat makes pressure, pressure makes heat. It's basic physics/thermodynamics. It'll put more heat into the barrel per shot than a .308 and burn the barrel out faster on the same firing schedule.
