If you haven’t watched the 2011 horror/mystery ‘The Cabin in the Woods’, put your Netflix watchlist on the back burner for an hour and thirty minutes and watch it right now. Directed by Drew Goddard and written by Goddard along with Joss Whedon, ‘the Cabin in the Woods’ is almost like a crossover of every horror movie ever, playing on stereotypical horror tropes and highlighting it with more stereotypes and typical horror creatures.
The cast boasts Kristen Connolly as Dana, Chris Hemsworth as Curt, Anna Hutchison as Jules, Jesse Williams as Holden, and Fran Kranz as Marty. They are a classic horror movie teen troupe who go to a cabin in the woods for some fun. However, every action here is being orchestrated by an organization, as part of a Ritual that prevents giants from destroying humanity. In the end, the protagonists find the truth behind their misfortunes, as the movie ends on a grim note with the Ancient Ones taking over,
The movie is heavily influenced by ‘The Evil Dead’ which can be seen time and again with the premise and many of its creatures. Apart from that, the movie draws heavy influences from plenty of other sources of fantasy and horror. They can mostly be spotted during the famous bloodbath scene of the ‘System Purge’ where every monster is unleashed.
In this video, we will break down the movie, show you what stereotypes have been characterized, how everything has been orchestrated and some of the most iconic creatures shown in the movie.

@rizot0ny1996 the monsters are all distinct enough to be considered different and not infringing on any other properties, but similar enough to common tropes to be recognized. That's the whole point. I bet if it was possible to use Xenomorphs and Pinhead, they still might have gone with their own versions because we as fans of horror monsters love seeing new unique takes on our favorite genre. I personally loved all the designs, and I imagine the art department had a f*cking blast making all those costumes and monsters.

To me the scariest aspect of Fornicus is just how human he looks, and the look he has in his face. He honestly looks like someone you would ask for help in such a horrifying situation, and he almost looks like someone who would help you if he could, because he carries the energy of a reasonable authority figure. But at the same time his cold expression radiates the sort of energy that says "Even if I wished to help you, I am bound by orders that prevent me from doing so. I have no more say in this matter than you do."

I STRONGLY disagree!!! I feel like the explanation of how they contained them or wielded them over the years. An anime abt how the world was when ruled by 'the old ones' would be SUPER dope. I would even dare a sequel, where the old ones wreak havoc on the current tech world, turns out celebs are the 'keepers' like how Sigourney was the director, idk but there's a bit to work with there! I can see it never being looked at again aside from rewatch, tho, which is PERFECTLY fine bc it IS such a good stand-alone movie!! I think the best movies make you WANT more off their world!!

The ancient ones are, in my opinion, Chuthulian only from the viewpoints of the characters of the film. The are a reference to the audience. Our horror movies were once fairly simple, but got more complicated. We expect certain events to occur. Horror is subjective to culture, so each country requires different rituals.

On the "Samara" ghost being used by the Japanese branch of the facility: in Japanese mythology, there's a thing called an onryo, which is literally a "grudge spirit." A ghost driven by its anger and the grudge it's holding onto even in death. There are also the more generic yuurei, which is just a broader catch-all encompassing many varieties of ghosts; basically, an onryo is a yuurei, but not all yuurei are onryo. In both cases, their appearance is the same as this ghost. Clothed all in white with long, disheveled black hair, pale and shown to be floating, as they have no legs. While the reference to Ringu is definitely there, but it's all part of a much broader monster concept.

plus japanese horror is based on curses, sudden hauntings, and demons so it's easier to deal with them than western horror.
@Mokiefraggle
@Mokiefraggle 2 жыл бұрын
@@hectorsumaoang2320 That's definitely true. Once you can find the source of the curse or the spirit's grudge, then the proper rituals (usually with the help of a Buddhist monk, or Shinto priest, depending on the situation), you can usually appease the spirit or break the curse. Sometimes it doesn't work, and the grudge just passes onto the next person dumb enough to walk into it, but usually, it's just as easy as the school girls the Japanese facility made the mistake of thinking easy pickings made it.
@vermillion6159
@vermillion6159 2 жыл бұрын
What sounds a bit weird to me is that they all look the same, according to your description. Ghosts are supposed to be "born" from the souls of people who died, both western and Japanese mythology aren't that different there. This implies that all onryos are the spirits of preteen girls, but couldn't let's say a middle-aged man become one as well when he's holding enough onto his grudge before his death?
@Mokiefraggle
@Mokiefraggle 2 жыл бұрын
@@vermillion6159 It's more that all depictions of yuurei are based on a person clad in traditional burial garb (white kimono tied right-over-left, triangle-shaped headdress), and usually with long, disheveled hair and sunken eyes. It's the same whether male or female, though a majority the stories I've ever seen of an onryo tend to be of female spirits. The teenage/preteen onryo seems largely a construct of popular culture (Ringu, Ju-On, Corpse Party), but the general markers are the same. Male onryo are a thing, in fact there are three known as the Nihon San Dai Onryo (Japan's three great onryo), whose grudges were so potent they brought about plagues, earthquakes, and drought. They're called onryo, but at that point they're so absurdly powerful they're also considered Tatarigami (curse gods), a designation which also includes things like the Yamata-no-Orochi. This might be why there are so few depictions of male onryo. They're in a class by themselves, going to incredibly destructive ends that their female counterparts don't reach.

The inspiration behind the ancient ones was actually the horror movie audiences as a whole. The entire movie is a satirical redefining of the horror genre. The rituals performed were satire of how every year, some country's film industry (japan and USA are most well known) needed to make some kind of teen vacation slasher blockbuster film in order for horror audiences to be "appeased" and have something to obsess over each year.
@Zidbits

Japan's horror movie industry is significantly larger than the U.S's. Most horror movies in the U.S come out near Halloween while Japan's releasing them year round. There was a website that had a huge list of Japanese horror movies that came out over the last 10 years that made it to the theaters (not straight to video) and it was like 400+ movies (and the author said he was missing a ton). I think the creator of this video gets one thing wrong; Samara 2. Ignoring the fact that the girl's name was Sadako (not Samara), there's another similar scary & iconic J-horror movie with a girl that's very similar: The Grudge (or Ju-on in Japanese). In Ringu, you had to watch a tape. In Juon, all you had to do was step foot in the property and you were toast. I believe the creators combined those two for their Kyoto ritual monster. Fun Fact: Ringu and Juon actually combined their two horror monsters as well, in the movie "Sadako vs Kayako". At the end they merge together like a Fusion from DBZ. The movie was campy but fun. Main character watches the Ringu tape and will die in 7 days so in order to save her, a psychic makes her walk into the grudge house, putting the two at odds with each other. Hi-jinks ensues and they fuse at the end.

@@davidschofield7351 Its called The haunted forest tour by James A. Moore and Jeff Strand. the title makes it sound like a kids book but it is very violent and gruesome at times.

I'm sure people mentioned it, but in case it wasn't and you hadn't caught it, the viewers are the ancient ones. We're increasingly demanding of our horror films.

@mrtimo3822 what? That the ancient ones are commentary on horror fans in general? They're not literally that in the universe, but if you look at it for the satirical film it is, then it 100% fits the meta commentary take about the horror genre.

the Blob could kill all these other monsters. I want a hard R rated, well done re-make of that. got so many ideas for a great Blob movie!

Maybe? 🤔!!, but each monsters is an Related & an avatars of The Titans a.k.a The Ancients One Deities. So why The Blod would be any threat to the other Monsters?? I'm not trying to correct your opinion, I'd also thought about that too. About which monster or why the other monsters didn't attack one another!? Until I find out each monsters there is just a small apportion of an vessel, aspect are avatars from each Ancients One self ,personality and of their Will etc.

I have a feeling that the giant snake might have been inspired by a boss from Resident evil 1 called Yawn as both have a very similar design but it could be a coincidence.

Jack from The Shining was not a monster, he was a regular man who was corrupted by the hotel (the real antagonist), who was using him to get to Danny :)

Any other Buffy fans here? The giant snake reminded me of the Mayor in Season 3.

A Prequel would make more sense than a sequel. A prequel in which is shown how this organization made their deal of sacrifices with the ancient ones would be great.

I think it'd be neat to see a TV show on how that facility started. Then show how they identified each monster and captured it. After that, you could then show some previous instances in the past they had to deal with. For example, they brought up failing before so show how they failed. You could even show some successes as well since they said the Buckners had a 100% pass rate, or show other countries passing.

See if other countries take part then are there more then one ancient one demanding specific things. Or how many countries need to pass and fail for the world to end?
