This is a blown 357 cubic inch small block Chevy engine. I have built several engines over the years, but, this is my first blower motor. It is a .040 over bore, 1987 block with World Products cast iron heads, flat top pistons, 9 to 1 compression.
The blower is a large displacement 6-71. On top are two 1850-3 Holley carbs. They have been specially modified to work on top of a blower. It has a Kuhl 20% under drive and produces 6 pounds of boost at 5000 RPM's.
Ignition is an MSD 6AL triggered by a high performance distributor with a magnetic pickup.Coil is an MSD HVC. This is a very streetable blower setup that runs on 93 octane pump gas.

Truth is, Blower used for $1700. Completely remachined and rebuilt in the tool room at my work. Heads used for $400. Short block un-assembled but new from a friend, $500. Carbs-Ebay $200. I only spent about $800 with Jegs for ignition, starter, Flywheel, pulleys and brackets. Plus extras I only totaled $3800. Not bad. Sold it for $6500. Even better.

Gordon, What power valve is in carbs? You need LOTS of enrichment for a blower motor. I installed high flow, 4.5 power valves. That is one thing. Holley carbs seem simple at first glance but there are a ton of tricks to tuning one. I suggest starting out with 75 or 76 main jets for a blower. Make sure you get some of the idle speed from the secondaries. Primary idle should be about 1-1/2 turns. Idle mixture screws should end up at 3/4 or 1. Then comes accelerator pump adjustments. Check floats.

it amazes me how many so called "builders" use an assembly engine stand as a run in stand....I'm waiting for one to blow over !!

can someone explain how it works, does it work like a normal carburetted engine where the air goes through the carb and mixes with the fuel or does this use some sort of fuel injection
@th3unn3rv3d3
@th3unn3rv3d3 10 жыл бұрын
It still functions the same with one exception. The big blower on the top is actually a compressor. What it does is it compresses the intake air and the fuel from the carbs and makes the engine eat way more than it would normally. With this, you have to run lower compression ratios 8.5:1 as opposed to normally aspirated engines which are 10:1. TL;DR. It's still exactly like a naturally aspirated carbuerator engine except it mashes air/fuel to make more power.

@RacerRickxx 10 жыл бұрын
Th3uNn3rV3d Actually a roots type blower is not a compressor. It just forces in more air than the engine needs, causing it to "stack up" within the inlet track. It artifically raises the adiabatic efficiency of the motor to over 100% - in other words, its making the engine think its bigger than it is in regards to the amount of air it can process.

Could somebody explain to me whats the difference between a blower and a usual supercharger, please?
@charlesuplifted5216
@charlesuplifted5216 8 жыл бұрын
No difference the blower was originally gear driven and was on dietroit diesels (ie 6-71 8-71 blower for the 6-71 and 8-71 dietroit diesels) one day tho some guy rigged one to work on a gas motor and converted it to run off a belt (supercharger) a gear driven supercharger is called a blower...which is why this is called a blower cause originally it was

Truth be told if you want to make huge power #s superchargers is where it's at look at nhra drag and funny cars damn near everyone of them run a roots style blower and twin magneto twin plug ignitions they pull hard off the line right on thru to the end you can't do that with a turbo .......yet Volvo is working on a triple turbo system now that uses a 48 volt electric turbo to spool up the exhaust driven turbos looked pretty interesting there's a story about it in I think jan orfeb 2015 hotrod mag which kinda leads me to think we might be seeing tiny engines spinning huge rpm#s making big power my question is how long will these tiny engines last working at these high rpms at all the time and the heat don't really matter all cars are disposable now I'm going to stick with my oldies with carbs an points ignitions I drive my grandfather's 65 ford f100 he bought new in late 64 every day it's my daily driver and it's all most all original except the wheels and steering wheel it's got the 300 straight 6 and a 3 on the tree and it nearly is to a cool million I did do a valve job and replaced the cam followers push rods an rocker arms because they were worn beyond there mechanical limits
@thepyrodude
@thepyrodude 9 жыл бұрын
Then why do nearly every dragster and funny car run super chargers ? Both have strong points and weak points with a turbo it's basically taking wasted energy by way of exhaust gasses to make boost and a super chargers use a belt taking power to make boost. Both when on the big end are making there peak power out put the difference is one is instant the other takes time but again if the turbo was better than a super charger for 1/8 or 1/4 mile you would see a lot of turbos in nhra but what do you see more of super chargers or turbos there's no denying the fact they both can make massive horse power numbers
@thepyrodude
@thepyrodude 9 жыл бұрын
There definitely better for a street car for a daily driver especially now that they have computer controlled boost timers you are not going to get that with a super charger plus you can add a methanol injection system to keep it from detonating control the burn make more power the old turbo Oldsmobiles of the 60s used a meth injection that people used to use windex or windshield wiper fluid

I think the videographer has a fetish w brand names. has a blower but still no head studs. Go figure. I also wouldn't have started that engine on a simple engine stand. I think he knew it could've flipped over which is why he never gave it much throttle lol

Would like to know what fuel psi is it running?
@qtrmiler1
@qtrmiler1 7 жыл бұрын
Carburetors typically run best between 6 and 7.5 psi. Volume is what really matters. You do not want to run out of gas with a blower.
@speed150mph
@speed150mph 7 жыл бұрын
@chip fisher you run low on fuel in a blown engine like that, bad things happen. Best case scenario you lose fuel flow completely and stall, worst case scenario you lean out the engine but still run at full throttle, and literally melt a hole through the piston.

Either this motor is running on 7 cylinders or has the worlds worst exhaust leak?? Maybe work out the bugs then video it on a proper stand too. That start up twist should have gotten his attention, but the builder just ignored it. Thats how motors end up on the deck!! Clearly, this vid was for a customer, that why all the “name brand parts labels were shown...

I have a slightly modified 327sbc (9:1) that has a 671 blower on it and 2 holley 650 double pumpers (4777-3 now boost referenced) It will start and idle perfectly but as soon as you try to accelerate it backfires big time through the blow off plate. I am at a total loss whether it is a timing issue or a carb issue. My AF gauge says 13 at idle, if i slowly take it up in rpm's it drops to 11.2-11.5. I have the base timing at 14° and locked out at 30° by 2500rpm. Does this sound right to you?
