350z Catch Can Install +Why It's Necessary! (Oil Consumption)

Ever wonder where the oil goes that your 350z VQ engine burns/consumes? It's getting recirculated into your intake manifold back into the motor via the PCV Valve to pass emissions.. this is not the "healthiest" way for your engine to run but is a regulation from the factory. I purchased my Nissan 350z with a PCV delete and come to find out..not having that positive crankcase vacuum line can be almost worse than having it with a PCV valve from the factory. Therefore an oil catch can will solve this issue by creating the same vacuum line system pulling air in and out of the engine but collecting the oil and vapors into the can instead of recirculating into the intake. Links below to order the catch can and tools needed. (10mm w/ 1/4 Size Rachet, Phillips Screw Driver, Allen Wrenches, 3/4 size wrench)

This is slightly incorrect. You are using the intake as a vacuum (negative pressure) to pull the crank case vapors (blow by) out of the top of the head/crank case (positive pressure). The reason this is done so you don’t leave fuel and water from the combustion cycle sitting in your oil degrading it. Also the reason they aren’t vented with that little filter from the factory is because those vapors are harmful to the environment. So they use the intake to cycle them back into the engine to burn them off. But over time, this cause valves to get all gummed up and can leave tons of carbon deposits.

Not on a 350z, these engines are port injected, and spray their intake valves with fuel which keeps them fairly clean. In fact, the OEM intake manifold design on these is meant to catch most of that oil, and what little oil finds it's way to the cylinders is just extra lubrication. Catch cans are really only helpful on direct injection motors, which do not have any cleaning effect on the intake valves. I took my entire intake manifold off just recently on mine to replace a valve cover and some sensors, and the intake valves looked almost shiny clean at 110k miles.

It’s not just to clean the intake valves though. It’s to prevent detonation and degradation of octane in fuel. This will happen if any oil makes its way into the combustion chamber.

You really have to caveat your comment with a "DI"' inject. Port injected engines won't see harm from this, only DI engines will. 350z doesn't need any, it's all marketing BS.

Love the vid, i think you got miss informed my man I think you got blow by backwards there’s a heavy negative vacuum on the intake from it sucking in a lot of air hints the term intake so even if that was to happen it would go out the exhaust, what really happens is all the movement under the valve covers makes pressure that needs to be vented and after the motor gets hot the oil cinda turns into a steam I guess is the best way to explain it and and what do you do with Oily steam, Nissan just decided to hook that into the intake to help lubricant the motor but Nissan figured it would help the motors last longer in return for a little bit of performance loss so a catch can is to help get that little bit of performance back but you also lose that lubricant factor

Ok, so here my 2 cents worth.. ignore if you like.. but, blow by comes from the crank case, the bottom of the engine, where pressure passes down past the cylinders/pistons and rings. So the pcv valve relieves the pressures that build in the crank case. The catch can basically filters those vapors and cleans the oil particles out. So honestly, there really is no point and is counter productive to reroute said filtered air back into the intake manifold just to muck up the intake air(it wont be entirely filtered ). Better to relieve to atmosphere. And since there is also a hose venting the driver side as well, it would be better to route both hoses to the can, then vent out to atmosphere through a small filter. Plug the intake hole again. I noticed the kit you bought only has two hoses, one in and out out. There is another version of that system that has three ports, one in and two back out. That one will allow you to take in both hoses out of both valve covers and vent out to a filter with minor adjustments to system for adding a filter on out port(hose adapter). I will be doing this set up shortly and can let you know how it goes. 🤞👍

Okay maybe someone here can help me lol. Turbo 350z, single turbo. I actually did vent my PCV with the same sort of filters, except now I'm about to get a catch can setup (decided to work on it, project car). Long story short, I quickly read that you 'usually' cap off the air intake inlet (that is underneath the throttle body/intake, this usually connects to the intake, however I'm single turbo with no intake on the turbo; Just a filter). So I did this. I was then going to do the Catchcan to the same setup as you appear to have yours, connected from the crankcase to the plenum. Should I keep the crankcase induction tube (the one that is underneath the throttle body) covered or should I fabricate a small 'intake' off the compressor wheel of the turbo for this to connect into instead?

It's interesting as the verdict is sort of out I guess as to whether these are really necessary or not. There is about 1/2 cup of liquid mostly oil. Now whether that would have been obliterated by the motor as a recirculates supposedly?? I guess catch cans can't hurt

There is also a hose for the ACTUAL PCV on the driver side rear that acutally intakes air from the back of the intake tube. That is the acutal PCV intake, its not that little hose connector on the plenum. The PCV valve is a one way OUT valve, not in. The oiled air comes from the cover back into the intake manifold so that can be burned off.
@Z33Garage
@Z33Garage 5 жыл бұрын
If you remove the PCV check valve completly, you will get air going back into the motor as well. On boosted applications the VQ will get blowby even from the back of the actual driver side PCV system intake. You can see the correct flow of oil vapors in the system in the FSM image I linked. g35driver.com/forums/attachments/canada/98237d1227123015-what-pcv-valve-do-i-need-replace-my-g35-untitled-1.jpg

It's actually worthless to put an oil catch can on a N/A port injected engine. It actually causes the upper cylinder to get less lubrication. I get that the REVUP and HR models do have a higher oil consumption, but even then since your spraying fuel across the intake valves, it really just results in cylinder lubrication. Smarter idea is to just get an oil cooler for the car, as the OEM in-line coolant to oil cooler for the 350z is trash and these cars generate more hot oil vapors than need be. It would have a similar effect, but still allow some oil to get in the cylinder and keep things running smooth.
@collinsepulveda9670
@collinsepulveda9670 Жыл бұрын
you doing both would be okay? or just one or the other?
@DaveDuzzit
@DaveDuzzit Жыл бұрын
@@collinsepulveda9670 No need on the catch cans if you get your oil temps down with a cooler, possibly even an expanded oil pan (6qt). Oil catch cans are really best for direct injection motors, because it helps keep the intake valves clean. Not of that much use on a port injected 350z, all your oil vapors are doing is blending into the fuel in small amounts at the intake valves, and adding lubrication to the cylinders. This is why the oil burns off. If it's consuming about 1qt every 4,000-5,000mi, don't overly concern yourself, just get an oil cooler at most. If it's consuming oil fast enough, a catch can isn't going to hold all of that, and you probably have worn piston rings/cylinder walls. In this case an oil cooler can help your engines lifespan, and an oil catch can might help avoid ruining your catalytic converters, but you will need to check it often less it becomes completely full and clogs up your PCV system.

@@collinsepulveda9670 I'd say go for the oil cooler and the oil pan extension. Then you're cooling the oil both in volume (6-7qt system) and with the oil cooler. It will also give you an extra qt. of headroom in the sump.

Hasn't this dude got it backwards regarding blow-by? It's gasses from combustion chamber pushing past rings and going into the crankcase...which is vented with pcv valve into intake manifold. Yes?

Snake Roberts im a newb spare me. The PCV valve connects to the “IN” port of the catch can right?
@massivemikeh
@massivemikeh 4 жыл бұрын
@@YapperU Correct...then goes out catch can to manifold. Basically the catch can is put inline of the hose between pcv and manifold.

Lol no. You need zero. Don't waste your money on marketing, only DI engines need catch cans. If your HR is actually burning oil you've got bigger problems.

Mateo Quiroz the HR engine doesn't really suffer from oil consumption, and the Pcv valve won't be in the same spot but you could look into it!

Just do it on your car depending on the miles in the engine you will a big improvement or not much but it will help. The idea of having that blow by back to the intake is for pollution emissions regulations purpose. My opinion no vent blow by going back to my intake.

I must try on my bad english,sorry.Catch can is more complicted than you think,even more if PCV is on engine..I build my own catch can,put oil level meter sensor from brake fluid can,i made adjustuble oil separation for variable engine pressures on idle,medium,high rpm etc..It takes time to do it right way,new engines have so bad factory oil separation systems,but pcv is not only bad desing thing from factory,egr flows are also so bad for turbo spoil,exsaust manifroids and inlet also..All that bad factory desings is only for Eco norms for any cost even for new engines.1/5 exsaust gas force is going for egr,and that is too high price for turbo engines..Every modern engine can run better,longer,stronger with few 'little'upgades but for do it right way,it takes time and much work for custom parts to unlock restricted potential of our engines...
