Filmed this outside and there's more glare than I'd like but I think it gets the point across. Some day I'll get good at this kind of thing.

Thanks! Well all I did was plug it in via the 12v port I had in the trunk so it stayed powered as long as I had it plugged in. I would unplug it when off the bike for the day just to keep the battery drain possibility to zero. Honestly no. I am missing the Zumo 550. Since that model the back light hasn't been as good in my opinion. I have this GPS on the wifes bike now. Been using the BMW Nav 6, also a Garmin. Nice video. Thinking about getting one. Can this be powered by a USB cable from the unit into a 12 volt adaptor? The location of the 12 Volt on my Versys 650 dash is terrible and will interfere with the bars if anything longer than and inch or so is sticking out.
@PatsAdventuresTravels
@PatsAdventuresTravels 5 жыл бұрын
Yes it can be hard wired into the bike. The cable it comes with does not have any kind of connector on it. It has a fuesed + red wire and an unfused - black wire. What I did was splice into my 12 receptacle so the GPS is getting power at all times whether the bike is powered or not. What I did on my previous bike was to wire directly to battery terminals, but be careful because when bike is running there is about 14 volts there. Not sure if this GPS will take that or not. I never looked into that. My Garmin 665 didn't seem to mind.

It has what is called adventurous routing. That works well. Then you can select how big of roads you want to be on. B, not sure what you mean here. C, I have no idea how many via points you can do because I don't use it that way.
@FxRiderST

Thank for reply. I'm not sure if you make custom routes, but if you do, you may set a via point by mistake not exactly on road. So while riding you just ignore it. I gave up on Garmin’s motorcycle units and use their mainstream car units on my bike, currently a 61 LMT. Bigger screen and much cheaper ($100 refurbished). Also I mount it center stage so dropping eyeballs a few inches catches new info without getting dizzy with all the back-and-forth. It is probably not as waterproof but a plastic bag over it and the phone works fine.

Fine review for covering the features of the technical aspects, but it would be nice to know: how is viewing the screen while riding (sun reflection, glare factor, clarity, color definition, etc.), how well does it operate in high temperatures and hot sun over time (e.g., over the course of a long ride), how well does it function in rainy, dirty, dusty conditions (is it truly waterproof, etc.)? Any additional non-electronic and usability comments would be welcomed.
@PatsAdventuresTravels
@PatsAdventuresTravels 5 жыл бұрын
Honestly it is lacking in the brightness in direct sunlight. With this or the other models of Garmin GPS I have owned I have never had a rain issue. That being said it is behind a windshield that does deflect some water. I also will keep it wiped off during a ride. I am strictly a street rider for the time being and cannot answer your question about dusty environments. Some of the buttons are very very hard to use with a gloved hand. The only other gripe is on the Touratech locking mount, but that is on them not Garmin. It is very hard to put the GPS in the locking mount.

Thanks for the review and great details.... I've always planned routes and more or less memorized them for rides. Yep, its almost the end of 2020 and about time I move to GPS. I have one question; Can routes be made on Google maps or Garmin software, then imported to Zumo 396 LMT-S via the SD card or USB?
@PatsAdventuresTravels
@PatsAdventuresTravels 3 жыл бұрын
Through the Gamin software yes. But Basecamp can be a challenge to learn to be honest. Lots of videos out there on learning it. As for google you can but have to go thru a google maps to gpx converter web site. This is how I do it but sometime when the Garmin calculates it, it doesn't always come out as the exact route I did. I have no idea why. I have been experimenting with importing the gpx into basecamp and then down into the GPS but with all these travel restrictions I haven't really tested it well enough to know if it helped or not. Oh and you download the routes via the USB cable that it comes with. I'd seriously look into the new one that came out. The big down side of the 396 is it can be very hard to see in direct sun light.

@@PatsAdventuresTravels I had friends with GPSs that have the same problem with route transfers(one of the reasons I don't use GPS currently). I hate to spend hours routing a ride to avoid highways and congested areas, just to have it reverted back to whatever the GPS thinks is the best route on transfer.. 😡 So "Basecamp" doesn't do this?
@PatsAdventuresTravels
@PatsAdventuresTravels 3 жыл бұрын
@@painsrides3616 My understanding is if you can create the exact route in basecamp the gps will follow it. Now that being said if you get off route and let it recalculate sometimes it changes your entire route instead of just getting you back on track. I'll admit it gets frustrating sometimes. But if you travel many miles over many states in 1 trip it does help.

You can upload them, but I have a heck of a time keeping them from being modified. I try to make them into a trip. It's more like a track when you use a GPX file. Best thing I think is to upload it into basecamp and covert and use it that way.

Google Maps is OK for simple things in town, but for longer road trips it fails miserably. Especially if you care about how you get there rather than just where you go. It's OK for cars, but it tends to make for boring motorcycle rides. With the Garmin, you can use Basecamp on a computer to do most of the route planning and it will keep track of your estimated fuel capacity and recommend upcoming gas stations. I've used Google Maps, but in all honesty it's mediocre at best and requires a phone or tablet.

I had planned on getting this Zumo right up tell I seen the cheap ass U-bolt they decided to use for the mount, it's ugly 🤮.
