Garmin Zumo 396 Setup and install tips

Garmin sent out this information regarding the lack of a fuse on the wiring.

Changing the Fuse in the Vehicle Power Cable for a zumo 396 | zūmo® 396 LMT-S | Garmin Support
Garmin has changed the power cable design for the zumo 396 to no longer include a user replaceable fuse. It now includes a re-settable fuse built into the cable's black box.
This change removed the physical reset button and now gets reset when power or the fault condition is removed. This change was made to provide a slimmer cable an allow for easier installation.

I read on another post that the newer ones that don't have the inline fuse, it has a built in circuit breaker. They removed the fuse to make it easier to run the wires. If it senses a power surge it will handle it internally. Then reset itself when the issue is resolved. Hope this helps.

I need videos like this, paper instructions are often impossible. Please don't assume we know stuff though. If I did I wouldn't need a video. Eg 'I'm sure you know how to assemble a ram mount" ...nope! Not a clue😂 love the video but please more detail. Those who know can fast forward! Thanks

Thank you for the feedback! I try to be overly detailed for that exact reason but sometimes I get moving too fast and skip over things. Thanks for the reminder to slow down. I want my videos to be helpful for people that are new to motorcycling and are coming here with no previous knowledge or experience. Like you said , “Those who know can fast forward!”.

Nice tutorial. I have just purchased the same zumo model here in the UK and mine came with an in-line 2 amp fuse so I guess Garmin updated this model.

@@THEGSADVENTURER I did have an 850GS 2019 model which I'd had from new but got a straight swap for a brand new with 2 year warranty Honda NC750X and love it, I'm getting over 80mpg. I didn't hard wire the Garmin because once I take it off its cradle its not connected anyway so cannot draw any juice from the battery. I never leave the sat nav connected once I'm off the bike for more than a few mins. Ride safe mate.

cool tutorial , just one thing, I think you forgot to install the small rubber cap that covers the connector when the GPS is dismounted. The cap is supposed to be "parked" on the inner side of the mount, in the hole trough which you inserted the connector (@1:49), when the GPS is mounted.

Hi! could you please tell me which is the + pole on the back of 396? i think it's the upper one but i'm not so sure…

Hi, Thank you for your video, I actually installed my Zumo 396 today and was curious about the bit you mentioned regarding the "switched power". What do you mean by that? I hooked the cables directly to the battery and noticed that with the bike off and the Zumo attached to the support it seems to be charging.

mrjekyll6 switched power means a power source that will turn off with your bikes key. With it connected directly to the battery the gps is pulling power from the battery even with the key off and can kill your bikes battery.

I wired mine to the bikes running lights so as not to have an issue with the battery.. any idea the size of that screw for the connector? i lost that little thing.

3:20 This is a good time to push the waterproof cable cover thru the hole too, before mounting the ball. Since you have to take the ball back off to do it. And, yeah, I had to take the ball off again, too. Garmin, was someone asleep at the switch when they failed to mention the cover in the instructions? A picture three pages later isn't good enough at a 350+USD price point.

I see after 12 months you have upgraded . Was this any good ? There are some good deals on this unit at the moment and was wondering if it’s better to go with this one or blow a few more bucks on the XT . Interested in what your thoughts are , how is the screen on the 396? 😀

GSD321 if you can swing the extra couple hundred bucks I would definitely get the XT! It’s much more user friendly and the inclusion of Birdseye imagery and topo maps is great if you ride off-road. The screen on the XT absolutely blows the 396 out of the water. And the XT is faster and more responsive.

Cant get Garmins idea of Cables..enough to route around the bike 3 times.. Anyone know if its possible to cut off and shorten the cabel betwween the 12 to 5v Power adaptor and the gps? Would like to shorten i t to about 50-60 cm max

Christian Richaud you can easily shorten the wires on the end you connect to the bike.....Technically you could shorten the other end too but you’re going to be dealing with the very small wires of a usb cord. I hate how much extra cord I was left with but I didn’t want to risk messing up and having to buy another power cord. I was able to tuck all the extra into my headlight housing.

Ed in Florida that’s why I’m here watching. Is that the 396 model you have which came with the fuse? Mine arrived the same as shown here and it makes no sense because nowhere is it stated what size fuse to use. Is there any chance you know what rating the fuse is supposed to be?

pjmtts I was lucky enough to have an accessory circuit on my bike that I could tap into. That circuit is protected by a 5amp fuse so you could go with that. I would bet that the zumo only draws 2-3 amps at most anyway but 5 amp fuses might be a little easier to find. Really all you are protecting from is a short to ground in the circuit before your zumo. A short like that is going to cause a huge draw and pop about any small fuse you put in there.

Some Sort of Road Trip so far that seems right. The unit uses 1.5 amps. I’ve seen it said that in general using a 5 amp will be ok as it’s such a low voltage. I’m still going to call garmin tomorrow to ask for sure what the factory fuse was supposed to be. Thanks for responding
