I have been Garmin user for many many years both personally and professionally. Never a problem, phone customer service. Now I have just bought the Zumo 595 for motorcycle and looking forward to using. Excellent video on the initial settings

Wonderful tutorial! I have decided to give my 1-year old ZUMO 595LM another chance after seeing your tutorial. Almost every problem I have had on my travels with this unit were addressed by your video. The 395 and 595 are an excellent piece of hardware, but the manual that Garmin ships with them is useless. One problem you may want to cover in a subsequent video is dealing with the black screen of death. Screen goes black. Operating the On-Off button has no effect, nor does removal and reinsertion into the powered mounting cradle. The only reliable solution I have found that works when on the road is to open the battery cover and disconnect the battery for a few seconds. This forces a full power-off reboot that will unlock the unit. None of this is mentioned anywhere on the Garmin website. Thanks again for the excellent tutorial.

Thanks for that tip, I will mention that in my future videos. Also in some cases pushing and holding down the power button for 30 seconds is the same as removing the battery pack. Thanks again.

That was a brilliant tutorship of my Garmin 395LM, thank you so much for making this so clear and very easy to follow. I must agree with Mr Skinner below with everything he says. Not only teaching bit by bit right through the unit but actually explaining in great detail everything about the unit even the obvious things that we tend to look at but skip over and have not a clue of what they actually are. Much better than the encyclopedia volume that comes with the unit. Thank you again Sir I am in your debt. Best regards from across the pond

No problem, all you have to do is install the Garmin Smartphone App on your smartphone and link it to your Garmin via Bluetooth. The app will transmit live-updated weather conditions, road conditions, accident alerts, and traffic info to your Garmin GPS. The app will use cellular Data so make sure you have either an unlimited data plan or a good amount of monthly data to use these services.

Great video and very helpful. However, one feature I am interested in is, the ability to choose a point on the map and get directions to that point. Does this unit have that function?

Thank you, yes you can do that, and you can even point your finger at any spot on the map and have it saved as a place of interest.

Hello. Great video, first of all. I have my eye on a Zumo 396LM. Can I use it powered through my motorcycle´s USB power outlet? If so, do I need that magnetic sensor that you mentioned in minute 3:47, or can I use a simple mount (for example a GoPro mount)?

Hi, unfortunately you can't use a regular USB cable to the USB port on your Motorcycle because it will put your GPS in PC Sync mode. Meaning the GPS will display a picture of a computer connected to the GPS and it will not function normally. To overcome this problem you have to use a Garmin specific USB cable which will let the GPS operate normally. These cables are several different types, one plugs in to the USB, the other hard-wires to the Motorcycle DC Network or battery. The magnetic sensor is good to have to let the GPS know it has been docked, however it is not a must, the GPS will still work without being docked. So yes you could use a GoPro mount if you can make it physically fit the GPS mounting mechanism.

Lots of features Blue tooth mp3 media player is cool. How do you access the sd card?

It does it automatically. So when you put an SD Card when the unit is OFF, when you turn it ON it will boot up and read the contents of the card. If you put an SD Card when the unit is ON it will restart and read the SD Card during the Boot up process.

I was wondering if the flickering on the lower brightness settings was typical for all Garmin units or just the 395LM ? By the way, Great tutorial ! Thanks

Thanks for the compliment, actually no Garmin would flicker in lower brightness sittings unless there is an issue with it. The reason it was flickering in my video is the Lower Shutter speed that I chose in order to capture the screen nice and bright. With naked eye you will not notice any flickering at all. If you do see flickering issue with any brand GPS or other electronic devices with LC, it means the backlight CCFL is going bad, the inverter board for the CCFL is going bad, or the back-lid LED driver is going bad.

thank you for your guidance, it is really helpful. about the screen shot, after we took the shot, where can i go to see the pictures? also i cannot find any camera lens on my 396 lmts? but it has the camera icon on the upper right corner..hope you can tell me..

You are very welcome, The camera icon is to take photos of the screen not the outside, so that is why there is no camera lens. Once you take photos you can find them in the " ScreenShots" folder. This is how you access it. Connect the GPS to your computer it generates a drive called " GARMIN DRIVE" and inside that drive you will see a folder called " ScreenShots" , double click on it and you will see all your screen shots.

Does Garmin have map you can buy of Thailand?

I have this exact same model and it stopped navigating or being able to give anything, but coordinates and N, S, E, or W travel direction only, about a year ago. Just looks like I’m riding in space with no roads.

That means either your Map SD card has fallen out, or you have unchecked the maps. Go to settings map and a the bottom of the screen on Map info and check all the boxes on the left if each Map.
