3D Printed RC Under Water Drone - PART 1

This is an underwater drone I made with a 3D printer and RC components I had at home. Instead of using a super long cable going from the drone to the pilot, I instead installed a cable from the drone to a floating container. The receiver/transmitter inside the container is sending the signals to the pilot. That way there's no awkward cable but instead a TRUE radio controlled drone under water.

Simon, For the past three to four years I have volunteered as a Robotics Advisor to a group of very motivated middle schoolers who participate annually in a competition called the SeaPerch Challenge. Our teams, over the course of those years, have taken 1st, 2nd & 3rd place honors in regional competition events and usually 1st and 2nd at the international event. I would suggest that you reference the SeaPerch website to get some ideas/pointers on how the SeaPerch ROVs are constructed. The basic SeaPerch ROV is created from PVC Pipe, however, our teams have done more thinking outside the box and successfully created incredibly lightweight, streamlined ROVs made from 3D printed parts as well as from lightweight aluminum wire for the frame. Like you have learned, moisture control is essential. We have found spray bottles with screw caps make a more adjustable method to get the submersible to become neutrally buoyant. Can't wait to see Part 2 of this series. Thanks for the video!

you should use a "Tupperware" style container with snap lid for the body. Also, you could place a large syringe inside that with the nozzle outside of the box. Then a servo can be use to fill the syringe with water making the craft go down. When you want to come up you simply empty the syringe! Genius!

I always wondered if this would work, it would definitely be a lot easier and cheaper! Plus if you have the bobber antenna attached to a spring system that retracts the cable as it comes closer to the surface is probably the best way to protect the transmission cable.

On waterproofing: I used to work on a commercial fishing vessel in Alaska for about half my life, so here's a few tips: 1. Sikaflex. It's about $8 a tube, water cures and is massively better than any shower sealant. We use it to repair cracks in fiberglass fish holds that need to seal and handle flexing and bashing around with thousand pound bags of fish. 2. Cables, hoses etc: a simple drilled pass through holes is very hard to seal. instead, you need some form of compression to pack a seal around it. a couple ways: * vertical: drill a tight hole in the sidewall, the cut a rectangle out, bisecting the hole. put sikaflex along the whole length of both parts, put the cable in and compress the whole thing together *or drill the small hole, but relieve the outer end just a little. make a washer or split washer that fits tight to the cable. Overfill the relief with sikaflex, then screw the washer on (compressing the sika tight all around the cable, with more surface than a thin hole would allow) *or make the box shape with a bottom plate as well. cut some gaps for motor wires, then fill with lots of sikaflex on both halves, put the wires in and compress. **final tips on that: clean/make sure the wires are clean before trying to seal. once they are clamped with sikaflex, don't touch it for a day (or you risk the seals). after that, they should be super rugged and resist movement while allowing a small flex. 3. access hatch: gasket it: buy some gasket material, cut to fit and sikaflex 1 side, so it always sticks to 1 side (no chance for contaminants or bulges to form). Also, don't put screws or bolts to the inside where they are prone to slow leak, put them to the outside, of the box/external Paint color: I like the frog green, but dayglow orange seems like a good choice for visibility. Pondering: I wonder how a green lazer pointing forward on it would look from the surface? final thought: enhancement: make a weakly sprung cable spool for the rc lead, so it automatically keeps the cable short.

For waterproofing cable easily you can buy cable glands, they come in all sizes for all sizes of cable. and you can easily print the hole they go trough. It's a secure way of waterproofing and they dont cost much and are re-usable. Anyway cool idea and you look/seem to be in more positive spirits than your last videos :)

you could use a smal air pump to pump air trough the connecting cable and push water out, in telecommunications we use this to keep water out of old leaky underground cables. or print in abs and use acetone + abs "Gooop" to reseal the layers together really really well- also good for really strong prints btw

I feel with you getting this thing waterproof. I had a similar project and it tooked me 2 years to get it watertight. The best option would be to use another case (no 3d printed one or print it with 10 layers vertical and no infill....) You also need a one part rubber seal like a ring and than you have to use that much screws, the seal ist getting pressed in pretty good.

Have you considered acetone smoothed ABS? That's the most watertight material I ever tried, and keeps 40° hot tub water without leaks. Also you could make designed areas for weight/air outside the electronics bay, so you can adjust with a bit of water if needed. I really like the concept, but attach a fishing line to the floating part just for emergency use when it goes haywire. (We want to see the aftermath.)

Use a hose, like a air pressure hose between the flotation device and drone. Add pump in flotation device and pressurize the drone. You can run the cable inside the hose and it doesn't gets damaged as easily. Then you can make it fancy with pressure transducers to have just a little higher pressure inside the drone than the water so it doesn't explode if you rise from deep water 😅 Or just get someone to weld you a metal box. Snyggt jobbat från Sundsvall 👌
