Moving right along in the vacuum casting series in part 2 I actually managed to cast some parts (rings) and I go through and give some information about the process, analyze the castings and make some improvements and try a second cast.

FWIW when I learned to cast with wax forms we applied a spray on surfactant to the form before investment to reduce the chance of bubbles adhering to the wax. Many investments these days have a built-in surfactant but maybe a separate one would help with the investment you are using and or not a "full" 29.xx" of vacuum. Searching for the surfactant, it is usually called a "debubblizer" which I don't think is an actual English word :)

You want to remove slag to remove impurities. So that all that you're pouring is brass. Ive never cast in brass so I can't say much for how much slag you get but I cast aluminum and the oxidation causes a lot of slag to float to the top and you want to scoop that out. You may lose a bit of metal but collect the slag, then do a slag cast so you get back the metal you lost originally. Love the vids so far!

@@DmitriIvanov going good man, I've been doing the same but just not YouTubing and Instagramming as much. Trying to enjoy the process a bit more without thinking about anything else.

@@TakamiWoodshop yeah I feel you. The filming and stuff gets in the way of doing whatever you're doing. I do enjoy editing though, so it's a bit tough :x

Since you're printing the sprue and funnel anyways, maybe design an integrated slag gate by having your sprue off-center opening into a secondary funnel that gets fed from the primary(pouring) funnel through a submerged gate. I hope that makes sense. It should keep almost all the slag floating in the pouring funnel. The only drawback I can think of is that you will need a steady and accurate pour.

Most of those words means something to me but not in that order. I'll do some more research but I understand more or less what you're saying. Cool tip, thanks! 🙏

I use 25% silver and 75% copper, no brass melting brass has Zinc and fumes of zinc are poisonous. I was casting silver jewellery only till 2006. Once the silver price shooter. I was asked to cast Brass jewellery. I shut down my shop as I did not wanted to breathe zinc fumes from brass. Low percentage silver casts excellent. Without any porosity. Try it and see.

Got myself some silver....is the alloy important or will 100% silver also cast well?

@@DmitriIvanov if you want to cast silver put only 4 percent pure copper, as pure silver is too soft to finish and polish. Try and see. If you want more hardness of silver than put 7.5% pure copper. Hope this helps. Good luck and be happy

For small castings a centrifugal casting machine works well and I've been using a resin printer with a wax like resin to create the patterns to be burned out. I don't know if the bubbles there are due to the vacuum casting process or insufficient vacuuming of the plaster. My father is an old school goldsmith and it took time to convince him to get a resin printer. When I showed him the results of the casting using resin he immediately went almost all out with the 3d printing as it's not hard to model jewelry compared to sculpting the wax to make a model.

How do you deal with the little imperfections left by the supports? That's what I'm struggling with now...

@@DmitriIvanov I just use a cutter used for cutting gunpla runners. Gunpla is a gundam model kit and some vendors sell cutters for that kind of hobby. That cutter has a nice flat edge to cut the support very near the model it's supporting. Also using different sizes of supports helps a lot. The small supports leave the least marks but you will need a couple of large supports exactly on the lowest part of the model so it won't snap off and adding a few medium supports. There's also placing supports on areas that will just be filed anyway so I usually just angle the model in that specific orientation. Using the gunpla cutters offers the best result but it takes time to snip off those supports properly and since my eyes are bad due to my age I need to use a watchmakers loop to make sure I cut it properly.
