I saw a ring by 3D artist Printed Obsession and I just had to have a go at casting it. I began by printing it on the Anycubic Mono X 6K using Siraya Tech Cast resin, encased the prints in investment plaster, cooked it in a burnout oven, poured metal and polished. I wasn't quite that simple, but you get the idea 😁
** LION RING CREATOR **
My thanks to Printed Obsession for this excellent ring design.

Please consider doing more testing with this. I use the same resin and am really interested in what the least amount of faffing about is necessary to get a good result. Are all the water washes necessary? What about the glycerin curing? Questions like that would be very interesting to explore.

Hell yeah buddy! Great rings BOTH of those! Thanx for the faffing and non faffing results! I'm sure you'll be back to the faffing madness before too long! LOL The ffaffing ring is definitely what most would prefer. However, the unfaffed ring has some character that others would find irresistable! Thanx for your honesty and meticulous approach once again my friend! Have a great weekend Geoff! :D

Those little imperfections actually make it look a bit older, like low tech casting techniques... I think for certain applications (like heirloom rings) it gives even more character, while obviously other things require perfection like the properly cured one =) Very nice result and glad to see some casting again! Remember the old days with tinkering videos and tracked lawnmowers? X"D
@vogman
@vogman 2 жыл бұрын
Remember them? I miss them 😁 I was saying to my son earlier today how I miss having an ongoing project, such as the lawnmower or the electric furnace... something to get me thinking and take several weeks of building. I would do something like that in a heartbeat, if only I could think of something. The only thing that comes close is my desire to convert a big diesel 4x4 to electric, but that would take a lottery win. I could never afford it... but what a fun project that would be.

Porosity is caused by the sprue system not being as thick as the thickest part of the models cross section. One sprue in the right place would have cured the imperfections. I'm a jewellery caster by trade. It's black art in itself. Prey to the casting god's. Love your videos

The scientific method require for the results to be repeatable so it would be interesting to see this test repeated a few times to see if the differences remain the same as for this one. The ring looks great anyways and the model is top notch.
@vogman
@vogman 2 жыл бұрын
Absolutely. That's why it's interesting but certainly not proven... though it does support the information I was previously given, so I guess we have to give it to Siraya Tech 😁

It would be interesting to know the chemical processes of why the "wrongly cured" print had issues with the casting process. As you said, the two prints looked the same after curing so there must be some chemical or structural difference that causes the tiny pits when the wrongly cured one is cast.
@vogman
@vogman 2 жыл бұрын
Oxygen I believe. It gets trapped whilst printed but spoils the casting process. 😁

You could use an ultrasonic cleaner with ipa to clean up the print with IPA It gets quite warm and allows the supports to more easily come off and all the uncured resin is removed, ( this is against the manufacturer instructions )

Thanks for another great upload! Have you ever tried to use an elegoo resin? Can you burn it out in the kiln similar to casting resin or is it 100% not doable? ALSO I what would you say is the most cost efficient casting resin? I currently use blue cast x10

I've tried "ordinary" resin in an experiment here - kzfaq.info/get/bejne/btZnfJt6u9PUg6M.html - though it was Phrozen resin. My guess is that all non-castable resins will produce similar results. After all, the right tool for the job... 😁 If you like X10, you really should have a go with X1. Bluecast really excelled themselves there kzfaq.info/get/bejne/pNiegatir8-WdHk.html

The science on why you used glycerin was interesting. I have a question about this curing process, have you tried making a silicone mold after it is cured in glycerin? I wonder how this casting resin would react with the mold compounds after your curing method. Typically 3D printed parts need a coating of something like Inhibit-X or the print reacts with the mold material. It is 3am so I cannot remember if it is Tin or Platinum based compound that reacts with the prints. This resin is different, as you demonstrate by burning it out, so I wonder about its other properties. If it can be molded right away this would help many people who make jewelry (not metal cast), dice, or game pieces.

That's funny. I was preparing some pieces using this resin today, I was convinced as well as the curing in glycerin, that one couldn't expose these to water. Am I completely off my chump?? Would make life easier if I could give them a quick rinse.

love the details on that ring. question - how do you know when a print is cured with this resin ? also, are you strictly following that burnout you post a screen shot of ? I haven't been able to get a clean cast with this resin yet :(
@vogman
@vogman 2 жыл бұрын
I'm VERY generous with curing. 1 or 2 hours is quite typical for me as I know how important it is. Once printed, clean immediately and get it into glycerine as soon as you can. Once cured, cast it as soon as possible. Don't leave things hanging around for days, but if you have to, try to vacuum store them 😁
