3D Scanning RC and Model Car Bodies to Create Custom Parts: A Quick Overview of the Process

One of the tools I'll use for various custom RC projects and builds is a 3D scanner. It allows me to create a digital model of just about any physical model car or RC body. This is great for creating custom interiors, body panels, wide body kits, and spoilers. In this video I showcase the 3D scanning process and show some examples of how having a digital model of the body can be helpful for designing various parts.

There’s a company that’s around the corner from my shop that we worked with in the past. The accuracy of their scanners is awesome. They market them for measuring purposes to multiple industries such as aerospace and automotive, however they are able to produce complex meshes that can be exported for 3D design. The scanner I was looking into for what I wanted was close to $159k!

I am looking to do this for the old Nascar Truck Series Dodge Rams. They are beyond and expensive to get, so making the body would be a life changer

id definitely have that done with my dakota since i cant find the scale model of it anywhere that isnt over priced

I bet this could work to scan the various parts of an N or HO scale gas station, the roof, sides, front, back etc. and then be able to scale them up to the model, diecast or RC scale size that you want to 3D print and build. With the 3D scan you would then be able to add more realism and other little details to the gas station to make one awesome diorama.

Nice video. Have you experimented using targets? In real world photogrammetry/lidar, targets are used to accurately tie multiple scans together. You can also measure between two targets in model to verify accuracy and scale.

My old phone used to have a feature where it would make a 3d model (head). Do you think this could work with a car instead? I would like to make my own model cars and i am starting to learn how to do bodies in fusion 360
