To think, these majestic instruments were made in the 20’s nd 30’s and still sound so magnificent. Such amazing engineering and ideas. Rudolph Wurlitzer was so far ahead of his time.. just amazing!

The real idea for it all kicked off with Robert Hope Jones. It was his concept and invention so to speak. Wurlitzer just had the means and money to do it that Hope Jones didn't have.

@@OrganMusicYT Worth remembering too, that although Wurlitzer was an American company, Robert Hope-Jones was an Englishman born in the Wirral and who produced a considerable of church organs in his native country before emigrating the USA in 1903.

We do our best to make sure his legacy is continued, if it weren't for him, we'd have so many fewer of these wonderful instruments and all that goes with. With the magic of KZfaq, we're introducing him to fresh ears. He'd have never thought people would still be listening to him almost 90 years after he released his first recording.

Love the Tower Ballroom and the sound of the organ. My wife and I have had several holidays in Blackpool and always spend a few hours sitting in the Tower Ballroom with our favourite tipple listening to the organ and watching all the wannabe dancers regaling us with their eclectic ideas of quick tempo, and men in sandals doing the Paso Doble. Happy, happy days.

I am lucky enough to live within a half hour drive of Blackpool and try to attend as many Wurlitzer organ concerts as work will allow. The latest concert on the 20/1/2016 was one of the best I have had the pleasure of attending. Peter Jebson , David Ivory, Steven Austin and finally Cameron Lloyd played a wonderful set that ended far too soon for all who attended. The tunes from these instruments are embossed on my mind from being brought up as a child in the Tower Ballroom. Long my it continue.

Best time to visit is April till October when the town is in full summer season and the weather is more likely to be at least half decent! The town has a few ballrooms. The most well known two are the Tower Ballroom and Empress Ballroom.

Well get someone to drive you to the ballroom with blindfolds on. Take them off when you're inside. Blackpool is a scruffy dump like the rest of Britain; beggars everywhere, litter, weeds, overfull refuse bins and scruffily-dressed people. It's a dump compared to the 1950s mate. Sorry - time machines haven't been invented yet.

I got hooked on the Dixon magic in 1970, but being only 13 at the time could not afford records. I attended Reginald Dixon’s two concerts at the Compton organ of the Odeon cinema in Sunderland in the mid-70s and others at the Wurlitzer organ in the Pier Ballroom in Redcar. He also appeared at Newcastle City Hall in 1978 playing the Baldwin electronic but played “Storm at Sea” on the City Hall pipe organ, I got his autograph on that night. Almost 50 years later I am still hooked on his magical music, and appreciate greatly those who perpetuate his style (Messrs Kelsall, Wolfe and Martin) and keep these wonderful instruments alive.

This is the most exciting VIDEO I have seen since I left the saloon! However, I am a Theatre Pipe Organ fan and Mr. Lloyd is great, and the organ in this large hall sounds wonderful. However this source of enjoying the music can't muster the full, true sound. Try to find one playing nearby you in the proper venue for the true affect.

"the organ in this large hall" is the most recorded and broadcast instrument of its kind anywhere in the World. Its sound has become synonymous with the British seaside - quite the achievement. What you say is true, you can't replicate hearing one in the flesh by a good organist.

It's always nice to hear, especially on TV and Radio etc. We're so lucky to have an instrument with a sound that is culturally embedded in the fabric of not just England, but the whole of the UK. It shows that Reg Dixons contribution to the organ is still relevant, and still remembered after almost 4 decades since his passing.

@@kevgilbert1268 I wouldn't say the mutation couplers are main characteristic. They are best used less, and for an effect. The main characteristic I would say is the strong drive in the left hand to drive the rhythm through.

I am inclined to agree. It can be very good when done right, or as an encore and abit of fun. It was Hector Oliviera (sp?) I think who started that trend. I don't think it has sounded particularly effective since the midi piano went on. I still say though that Reg Dixon had the best use of it, keeping it to two manuals and doing it sparingly and to good effect.
