The simultaneous view of night vision and thermal was fantastic as was the use of the IR illuminator. This is one of the most educational, informative and unbiased reviews of a hunting topic I have seen to-date! Thumbs up and I'm subscribed.

pardon the pun but this really helps 'clear' up the difference between thermal and night vision! I had no idea that a simple pane of glass could do so much to compromise the thermal, nor did I know that camouflage was almost as effective at night as it is during the day. Great comparison, Thank You Sir!

As I was getting out in 2005 , the new Fusion systems night vision/ thermal was coming on. One side took night vision tech and the other thermal and as you looked through the eyepiece you saw them overlapping. You could select off either technology or leave them on which was really helpful. Think very expensive. I was told our simple , but very sensitive night vision units, were $16,000 per set. No one was giving me an estimate of the Fusion System cost. An individual from Germany was showing me a system which had the vision output displayed on the helmet visor, think motorcycle helmet visor, and had 5 cameras on top of the helmet. There were no goggles. You just looked through what looked like a normal visor, but when you activated the system , you saw the overlay on your otherwise clear visor.

Thank you very much for the video. I know that it was a lot of extra work to create it; walking back an forth numerous times. The thermal is obviously best for hunting since there are no window panes in the wild. If you were laying in wait out there and someone just walked in with an IR scope, they might never see you until you moved. Again, thanks for all the extra work you do to present both aspects of night hunting.

I was for you til you said it absorbs thermal radiation. Glass does a good job of reflecting thermal radiation. If it adsorbed it well we wouldn't make cookware from it. P.S. just some extra trivia, Because glass reflects thermal radiation, thermal optics have to use expensive germanium lens, as germanium lets thermal radiation pass through it.

My husband thought it would be hilarious to have me look through his first thermal camera from inside the house looking out through the glass door. I nearly pissed myself seeing a human body through the door being it was about 2 am in the morning. Reflection is irritating with thermal so I’m looking into IR for a new toy for my husband. Pretty much any of those will ruin your scotopic vision since you're basically looking at an illuminated screen. The only solution is to have a dimming option for it, but even then it wouldn't be perfect. Another way would be to use one eye to look through the scope and keep the other one adjusted to the night, pretty annoying though, and bye bye depth perception.

I have both.. Wife and the kids all have thin filmed 3rd gen. Oldest girl likes the Eotech in front of a 14 with a TP Logic on a 45* for short range thermal. Personally I like a huge IR illuminator and a squeaker all animals will look toward the noise and it doesn't seem to alarm them. So, if anything is hiding you'll see them because their eyes will light up like an IR flare. Other than that its Night vision goggle with a thermal on the rifle seems to be the ticket. The common thing I hear is that the IR light isnt passive and can be seen by others.......When the hogs and yotes start shooting back with night vision then we'll talk

One extremely important thing to point out about Nightvision in my opinion is if you use it together with an IR illuminator the eyes of the animals will actually reflect the light making it in many cases even easier to spot game compared to thermal vision. Sweep a field with a Nightvision + Illuminator and there will be tons of eyes everywhere. With Thermals particulary if you are not using a super top end device you can miss animals or you find yourself sneaking up on hot rocks and stuff like that.

@@LoneStarBoars With Thermals you often have mixed results ive found. Animals dont always show up clearly depending on conditions and quality of the device. And if you found a piece in a hunting situation its really hard to say what age and gender it is and spotting signs for a mother that has kids to take care of like the milk bar (for lack of a better word). Like i said the eyes really pop when using Nightvision + IR illuminator and for actually analysing what you are looking at Nightvision delivers way better detail in my opinion.

So, the gray scale system is better suited to a rural/outdoor environment & the green scale system is a better choice for an urban environment; because night vision that doesn't allow you to see through glass in a city full of buildings and cars is pretty useless. You could just have both of them blended digitally by some software and get a nice crisp blended image that you can tune instead of torturing your eyes like that. There's so much a little bit of software processing could do for these existing technologies. You could get the thermal image and the edges and textures from the NV overlayed, like FLIR's msx thing (except they use normal camera instead of nv) Or you can have the thermal image overlayed with transparency over the NV image, or you could just have the NV image and just little boxes overlayed over the hotspots/coldspots and much more.

Very good , really helps visualize the day to day use of each. For spotting the thermal wins hands down. But for moving around the night vidion is better as the thermal doesnt pick up the twigs branches etc due to similar thermal levels.

The problem is the price. You can not compare a thermal visor!

Thermal is good for seeing changes in temperature, but for increasing the brightness, NVG would preserve the details. Not the best when looking for living things, but great for looking at EVERYTHING when it is low-light.

Patrick EH ain’t gonna see shit when using thermal inside the car, helicopter or plane. If you use it inside the cab ofcourse. Outside is no problem. With night vision, this is no problem

Laser Guy, you put the thermal sensor outside and keep the screen inside. This is common on yachts. Flir is one company that makes such a system. The sensor can be mounted onto a device that can be rotated as well as height adjustment via user control. The MFD or multi-function display in the helm can display the image. Although Radar works well for some applications, its hard to tell what type of object caused the echo. Thermal imaging gives a detailed look at a object. From my experience, the three typical aids to night navigation are GPS, Radar, and Thermal camera. When combined with the naked eye and other technology such as AIS, nigh-time navigation is becoming safer..
