Today on Unity Motorsports Garage I'm back on Project UNDERCOVER the 2003 Ford Crown VIC LX Sport.
In my last video on the Vic I talked about the ‪@latemodelrestoration‬ Dyno video where they picked up almost 20rwhp by replacing the Dorman intake with just a stock Ford PI intake!
you must see to believe the Dragy results that I achieved..
also I have teamed up with ‪@Usshift‬
on this project to make sure Project UNDERCOVER is one shift ahead by using there Quick Shift 4 4R70W standalone transmission controller!

For not much more money than a new PI, I ordered an edelbrock because I’ve had to replace plastic intakes about 4 times over the last 6 years over a couple of different cars. I’d love to see more crown Vic content.

An added bonus to the flow results would be to do a dragy comparison between the throttle bodies and a before and after dragy comparison of the one u are going to port , that would be cool, we see lots of flow testing which is cool but it will be even cooler to see the flow results then how much faster those flow numbers equates to on the dragy , that's something that nobody has done before that I know of and that would be awesome to see 😁 I might be asking for too much though 😅😂

I really enjoy these types of test! Great job Andy! It almost sounds like it "draws back" when it shifts from 1st to 2nd, but maybe just the sound on the video.

It’s not unusual for the factory tune to use timing along with other means to soften shifts in the attempt to protect the transmission. I’ve had to deal with it on my cars. One is a factory supercharged Pontiac V-6. Even with the so called heavy duty (HD) version of the 4T65E transmission , the reduction in power right before the shift is clearly noticeable. Rather than spend thousands on a aftermarket glorified transmission, I bought an optimized PCM tune for my own PCM that eliminates power reductions and provides crisp, not harsh shifts in all gears. The ZZP tune improved drivability and increased horsepower. The cost was only $125 and the results are priceless.

Karl was the man in the 90's with getting the first Gen Lightnings to shift properly. His updated controllers are the way, especially if you run a stand-alone ECU. I don't know of anyone else that understands the modern Ford transmission controls as well as he does. Our customers 30 years ago were always happy!

Look at the runners. That is the difference. The Ebay and Amazon Intake for $106 will work. Longevity is the problem. The Ebay intakes last about 2 to 3 years. I've never got more then 3 years out of the Ebay one. I paid $315 for a Factory PI intake and 5 years later it's still going.

Andy - RJS High Flow Converters… They are shaped like DV’s - Zero back pressure exhaust can… These converters are made in Germany. Used on Ferrari and Porsche… Supposedly these RJS High Flow converters flow 85% to 90% of a straight pipe. The reason I say this is for the sleeper effect.. Keeping these Crown Vics and Town Cars quiet. They say you know you’re getting old when you say “Turn the loud music down.” lol :)

I've had varied results on Dorman products. I know their LS2 intake flows better than stock. On the other hand, I purchased an exhaust manifold for a 2.4 Ecotec that was so bad, so restrictive in excess casting material, I returned it. I bought a Dorman rear axle shaft for an Astro van that the bearing wouldn't even fit. I'll buy Dorman parts if I don't have a choice but I'm pretty pessimistic on consistent quality from this once great supplier.

Yes - Stock PI intake is a much better intake than Dorman Andy! I want to change timing chains and tensioners. Degree the cams - Lincoln Town Car 2006 What is the correct ICL Installed Center Line???? I know you’re the 4.6 2V master mind… You and DV

Totally cool, a real world, real feel test between these two intakes, and that's why you stay with the factory intake, great test Andy, yeah the flow test on the upper throttle body of all three would be awesome test and video.

Definitely want to see the upper plenum flow tests. The PI trans settings are way better than the civilian version. Lastly, you need to put the PI air box and zip tube on the cr.

Interesting. The original all plastic intake on my ‘00 Mustang GT cracked a few years back and I installed a Dorman intake. Always wondered if that was a mistake. Your video just confirmed that it was.

Good video Andy, I belong to a few different 4.6 groups on facebook and there is always someone saying oh I replaced my intake with a dorman and didn't see any difference. The only way I see that result is if they didn't have the pi heads to start. Also would be nice to see the flow results of the different plenums. Keep up the great videos Andy.

Andy, I am glad that you did this test as it a true comparsion. I have the exact same car with 278k miles on it. It does have a tune, Mercury Marauder mass air flow sensor and an 04 CVPI intake tube with the J-mod done to the transmission. IMO will loose low end torque with the Edelebrock as it has shorter intake runners. I want to see the gains that the TFS heads do with the stock cams and intake. My old Ford field engineer told me they worked hard to get as much tq and hp when they did the PI upgrade. These CV need bottom end torque to enhance the driving experience.

I have a '98 F-150,4.6, auto. What's the highest RPM you get in any gear? Second seems to shift later (RPM) than first? And the shifts are pretty soggy.

Would love to see the tb test. Why not just get and sct plugin tuner and you can then change the shift algos and the firmness, and also tune the engine all in one. Great content!

The Transgo re programming kit was first developed on my 92 GM 4L80e 250k miles and still runs and shifts great Switched to Citgo Quatrasyn for fluid check it out

There are gains in the plenum/elbow. Ben Alameda pioneered that back in the day. After he started porting them and did a magazine article the aftermarket started producing them. Ben Alameda Racing on youtube, the man is pure genius.

The only experience I have with the Typhoon intake wasn't a good one.. bad casting and took alot of work to make it right.. but this was 15 years ago.. they do make for a nice intake once the casting flash is cleaned up. Once you get above the 320rwhp level it begins to show gains.. Hope this helps Andy

What cam would you recommend with the Trick Flow heads 4.6 5sp Mustang. Stock bottom end or would you recommend a stroker kit.

Looking at the cheap intake manifolds on Rockauto, I noticed that the other aftermarket intakes didn't have the flattened ports like the Dorman. I wonder if one of those would flow as good as the Ford oem PI intake?

Yes, its the one sold under SKP/ATP/Autotecnica brand. This is the other aftermarket design. It would be interesting to know how it compares to Dorman style. It's somewhat important because Ford OE PI intake is discontinued. There seems to be some crown vic style ones left in stock, but mustang specific ones are long gone... So get them while you still can.

Yeah that is crazy from just putting a stock intake back on.. it has 3.27 gears in it combine that with 4000lbs = fail Hope all is well way Andy

What kind of loss are we looking at with the ford pi intake manifold vs an edelbrock victor jr with the adapter to run the stock elbow and throttle body? I have wondered if it'd be better to go with the victor jr vs dorman since we are losing with the Dorman anyhow. The edelbrock should open up top end considerably.

The tenth gain was more legit because the first 2 runs were uphill the fastest run was downhill.

for my 92 Grand Marquis I have a spare 50k mile 92 CV motor, I am planning on doing a swap to knock off 200 k miles what should I do to the CV motor before the swap. Both my motors are Before PI BTW a pick up truck 2 row radiator is a drop in as are PC blue silicone hoses. I run a big cooler and the PC oil cooler 0w-40 synthetic oil 85 -140 rear diff fluid. PC hd flex fan and later supplemental electric when the ac is on switched to 16 in wheels cheers big sway bars and pc shocks rides good

Will someone please make a new better lower intake manifold? All the FRPP ones are gone. They had plenty of room to improve. My Lincoln and Mustang both need one! Help! Dorman/ATI running like a gimpie dog.

5 yrs ago a friend put on a Dorman and he said it knocked the power in the head. '02 ? G.M. BTW, my other car, TownCar Sig with 93 octane real gas shifts sharper than with 87 ethanol. No big deal, not a race car.

Brother, the Dorman intake is junk when it comes to performance. It work fine on a Towncar or on one that is a put put. If you don't car about performance. I've installed countless intakes on the Police interceptors. It has the wide flat runners. It will kill the top end on a Interceptors. I paid $315 from Ford. I only buy the PI intakes. Late Model Restoration has 2 intakes. 1 is $249. That is the proper design. The one with the thin tall runners is correct. The wide, thin one will kill top end. There are ones on Ebay and Amazon for $115 that works great as well. It has the thin tall runners. But the bad one is the same price as well.

Two tenths of a second is a veeery minimal difference, result probably would have been much more noticeable on a 1/4 mile pass.

Dorman alternator bracket is _TRASH_ too, as well as specific gaskets, oe, or oe style gaskets won't work w/ Dorman.

I found out the computer pulls the timing back to -1.5 degs then slowly adds it back in.. needs a tune Andy

Ok now lets understand what Dorman is all about... So the stock part costs you over $600 ? Dorman responds we will cut more than half the price on the same part but we wont do racing mode... We will just get you back to running at a low cost and we can even pitch in a few extra parts so you can basically do this job yourself without running for extra parts... Dorman is like that family friendly uncle that will sell you his car for cheap so you can go to college... Nothing more....
