the number of plugs on the PCM is a good way to tell without taking anything apart. 4 plugs means 32 teeth, 3 plugs means 16 teeth. I've seen a lot of people end up with the wrong tone wheel when they are replacing an engine. Especially in 1st gen Durango, and 1st gen Jeep Liberty (since the 3.7 is just a 4.7 minus 2 holes.) They did the changeover mid-model year, on Durangos, 2002 is that year. Early ones had 16, late had 32. So getting a replacement engine for a 2002, you can end up with the wrong one. I am trying to develop a solution for Durango/Dakota hemi swaps which would also work on this. My idea is to CNC a tone wheel that mounts on the crank pulley, and relocate the crank sensor to read it, enabling a 32 tooth engine to run in a 16 tooth truck.

i like the way you think !!! thanks for watching.

Theoreticaly if you disconnect the 4th plug, would the pcm assume its in 16 tooth mode, or is the pcm preset to only read one or the other(16 or 32)? Assuming the extra plug modes the pcm to enable 32 sensing mode. If its preset into the pcm then probably won't work. However if enabled by the reading then in theory possible. If anyone tries this and it works let me know! Sometimes less is more, more or less!

the number of plugs is just an easy way to tell, it has nothing to do with teeth on the ring. The 3 plug PCM is the older JTEC system, and the 4 plug PCM is the newer NGC system. The JTEC PCMs are set to read the 16 tooth rings and there is no way to change that.

If its a manual transmission truck does that affect the number of plugs on the later pcms?

excellent idea, have you ever swapped the ecm, when attempting this change with the engine having that tone? im curious to know if the durango ecm would cause shifting issues or not?

I just changed my first crank position sensor today. I was having an issue when the engine was warm where it would hesitate to start. I put the new crank position sensor in and got a couple of misfires when I try to start. Not sure if my crank position sensor is bad? Maybe it's the wrong part number?. Like to ask a general question as you seem very knowledgeable is when I put the sensor in do I have to rotate the crank so that any part of the reluctor wheel is facing the sensor when I initially put the new one in?

You can also look at the timing mark on the passenger side cam wheel. They are different from 32 to 16.

Yes yes yes im learning so much that its usually better to eliminate through process my wife 2002 Dodge Durango has a bad idle I'm going to timing chain because I replace a throttle positioning sensor replace the air intake sensor replace all coils replace all spark plugs and it's still rough idles but when you get on it it runs like a hot rod just rough idle to wear it sounds like it's running out of gas and something broke inside the timing haven't took it yet will update as soon as possible Happy Father's Day my 2 month old is still sleeping

If I'm correct. When u said u have to take off the alternator to take off the black thing off that's sits in middle. No u do not have to remove the alternator. My engine is the same on urs. And it's locked I removed the throttle body and the black thing that's sits in middle. Without removing alternator.

I have a 2005 grand cherokee with the 4.7l looking to swap with exact motor and was wondering if anyone knows if the ram dakota durangos are the same. Is the tone ring count different jeep grand cherokee. I know they use two different systems jtec and ngc. Anyone has any info greatly appreciate the knowledge

What would I have to do to take a 4.7 from a 03 Durango to 00 jeep grand Cherokee
@thomasbriansavingmoney6 жыл бұрын
a lot. first check the ring gear count. you want to make sure the ecm will read it. if not you will need to change the ecm with the 4.7, but if you do swap the ecm, you will need to also swap the tranny. because it will not read it. then check pigtails and motor mounts as well as water ports to be sure they are on the correct side or change thermostat housing so it points correctly etc.. check everything you can before you decide. the ecm is the biggest issue. welding motor mounts and changing cross member etc is no big deal. just time. thanks for watching.

If the reluctor wheel has slipped on the Crankshaft why can't you tap it back in place and install a set screw or tack weld 🙂

did you ever figure it out. I'm thinking you just needed the pcm for the 32 teeth
@davidw94034 жыл бұрын
If u made the mistake of buying a 16-tooth when your CPU reads a 32-tooth, can't you just swap the reluctor ring on the crank and the sprocket on the cam to have the crank and cam sensors to read it correctly? Or is there something else that will cause this not to work?
@thomasbriansavingmoney4 жыл бұрын
i think you can, however i have not done it before, it makes perfect sense though. keep in mind the crank and cam will need to come out to perform it. i have both engines here and i may just try that. i too am very curious. and it does make sense. let me know if you try, and if i get to it before you, i will make a video and send you a link as well. great question. the 1500 4.7 is harder to find then the Dakota and durango, so it would be great !! anyone else try this, your info would help us all. thanks for watching.

Yes, that's what I have to do now to get driving again on my 03 Dakota from a 2000 Durango. Ur video helped me find out why I had a no-start (I wasted a week and a half doing unnecessary checks). The more videos the merrier then; I'm an unexperienced mechanic running into obstacle after obstacle, but the aid from others online (especially explanations from multiple youtubers) has kept me going. I wasted another week thinking my cam wasn't turning normal and had a lot of resistance (since it has been so long in this project to remember how it was supposed to look like turning by hand) then I posted a video about it. Thank you for checking the video out and easing my worries about it because I was stuck thinking of an imaginary issue. I guess my problem is setting the timing chain and tensioner correct (which I found a great video for as well).

So I ended up had to take engine out. Due to torque converter when couldn't turn the flywheel at the time. Whole trans and engine would had to come out. Due to more hazard to my self and vehicle. So I used rust rescue that I pour into spark plugs and holes let sit for week. Then I was able get the crank to turn. But only 1 full turn to right or left. Just enough to undo the bolts for the torque converter. When I got my engine out. I took off my valve covers. Finding out I have 9 out of 16 lifters were bad. How I can tell? Shake a bad one. And shake a good one. Bad one will have play sound. Good one won't. Due to I had 9 bad. I'm replacing all 16 hydrolic lifters. Cams rocker arms are good. Cleaned it. Let set in oil until the time to replaced back on. I went ahead replaced timing kit with new gears. When I checked the rods, pistons, and crankshaft. 2 rods were damage. 5 rings were damage, 3 bearings were damage. To be on safe side. I replaced all. Including new crankshaft. New flywheel. I replaced new freeze plugs. New seals, new gaskets. New oil pump, water pump. Tensioner. Almost everything on my engine is new. Accept for alternator Ac compressor. It basically took me 3 weeks to rebuild it. Took my time and done it the right way. But one thing I problem on. Getting the timing right. So I had my best friend mechanic came over to inspect my engine. And to recorrect my timing. He said I was 2 teeth's off. He went ahead resit the timing. Next 2 days. I placed on the timing cover and the others. 3 day friend came back over. Help me placed the engine back into my truck connected to the trans. With new torque converter. Connect everything else back on. Due to my friend came and help me. He took for first test run. He says it droved like a charm.

metal tubing goes to it. look again. it may be hard to see, but its there. put your belly over the engine. right behind the head that is on the passengers side. in the rear toward fire wall. or lean over the passengers side standing on a crate or whatever you can, and put your hand in between the passengers head and fire wall. all gas and diesel engines after 1986 will have them . and most before. 86-91 emissions were dead set on re burning fuel. some engines with carbs, pre 86 did not.
