Жыл бұрын

CE Performance Crate Engines combined the 400 SBC and 327 SBC type bore and stroke combination, after what was learned with our 354 cu.in. SBC (327 crank in a 400 block), and created an engine, a 349 cu.in. LS with a 6.2L block, bored to 4.125", and a 4.8L 3.267" stroke crankshaft, that produced 1.889 horsepower per cubic inch - an awesome accomplishment! From original video: • 4.8L Crank + 6.2L Bloc...
In addition to the original 349 LS dyno video, Steven Shumey of CE Performance Crate Engines discusses some 349 cu.in. LS crate engine details! Please comment and/or ask any questions. Thank you for your support!
This build included:
- GM 6.2L aluminum block bored to 4.125"
- GM (stock) 4.8L 3.267" stroke crankshaft
- Eagle 6.3" H-beam connecting rods
- AFR LS3 260cc rectangular port cylinder heads
- Edelbrock Super Victor LS3 intake manifold
- Solid roller cam
- 12:1 compression ratio, runs on pump gas
Cam specs: The camshaft is one we got Comp Cams to make for us. We picked 2 lobes we liked and had them put them at 113 LSA. The lobe numbers are 12677R on the intake and 12686R on the exhaust. The specs are 249/267 @ .050 of duration and .675/.675 lift and .016” lash. The lobes are a hybrid design and can be used on either hydraulic or solid rollers. This 349 LS has solid lifters.

That combo sounds awesome my 75 Monza would love something like that, so would my 68 Impala, or my 78 Malibu, or 79 Monza, or 88 s1o- blazer. The engine is excellent. The video presentation is also excellent. Steve is a scholar. The LS platform is exciting! Still lots of new ideas and combinations to be discoverd yet. It would be fun to see a group of top local engine guys from around the lower mainland get sponsored, team up and take a shot at the engine masters challenge. Or some kinda challenge for fun. But it would require a induction expert, a engine dyno expert, a large engine rebuilding fascillity with top guys and dynamic thinkers to all come together and share the task. I predict Canada would put up a very good fight in a deal like that. Maybe we could win a free jug of amsoil. 😉

I'll never understand why anyone would want to build a stroker for performance if you can achieve roughly the same displacement with a destroke because the destroke will almost always perform better. You guys built a 400 block with a 283 crank (always wanted to build one but haven't has the opportunity) which is VERY impressive. I've always wanted to put a 348 crankshaft into a 502 block to see what would happen when you pushed a big block Chevy to be as far over square as possible with a GM produced block and crankshaft. I'm guessing it would be a beast! Keep up the great work guys!

Holy moly Im just learning these LS series in the last few days I've always been more of an import guy but I'm looking at building an FC rx7 but with how much the the price went up on all the good Japanese motors like the 1/2jz, the 13b went up in price not just on motors but the parts for them, an LS swap just makes so much more sense. N/a no turbo system to worry about, can still build a high revving motor for a reasonable cost with absurd power levels for a 2500lb car. I guarantee if I built a 5-600hp rotary I would end up rebuilding it over and over spending thousands each time. Now that I know I don't have to blow 2,700 on an LS3 block I can just use a caddy block it saves me a couple grand at least too!
@ceperformance

Absolutely! These 6.2 blocks are definitely tough enough for N/A even making 600+ HP.

Great job, I like forced induction/tubocharing to regain some of the power loss compared to the standard 6.2 LS as well as further increase engine efficiency. So the engine would match or exceed the power of a standard 6.2 LS but have higher rpm capabilities. Probably a very obvious question but would using a Howard's camshaft, or a Summit Torqinator camshaft be suitable for an engine build like this? Or would the choppy sound just be lost once higher rpms are reached (I honestly don't know).
@ceperformance

Thanks for commenting. Camshaft choice is very important to get right. There’s a lot of bad ideas out there for sure. Choppy isn’t always the best. I like stuff that sounds nice but performs the best in the application.

Hey, when are yous guys going to install Ford a 302 or a 289 crank in a 4.125" bore after market sbf block? Unfortunately the newer Ford engine platforms aren't a good match for these kind of configurations. Or what about a .060" over MOPAR 340 block with a 277/301 crank that has a 3.125" stroke? Or a .060" over 6.4L Hemi with a 318 crank in it? Same bore spacing but different bearing size.318 mains are 2.500" while the Hemis are 2.559" so if they make .060" undersize bearings you could use a standard 318 crank? Not sure though because of how narrow the Hemi con rods are, the older crank might be to wide in between the Hemi block's mains?

Talk about a mad build!! 👏‍ Now I'm here wishing GM made an LS version with an even shorter stroke than the 4.8, maybe the same as the old 283...or at least that they kept producing and improving the 4.8, instead of phasing them out in 2007. And while I love the LS for its flexibility of recipes, I sure hope to see these recipes being brought to the LT family too!

Hey thanks for commenting! It would be cool to build a 3” stroke LS for sure. I remember when Nelson Racing Engines did a one-off race boat twin turbo LS with a 3” stroke. @@ceperformance Uncle Nelson! I've followed his builds for years! How come that one escaped I don't know, but I'm glad for that video, hehe! 260 cubic inches, that surely seems a big deal! To think it's just a bit larger than the 250-ci 4.1L inline-6's so popular here... Considering that crank is possibly custom-built, I do believe it could even be shorter than that. With the engine operating at max rpm for long periods, having a piston speed as low as possible is the ideal. Thanks a lot! 👍‍

What are the cam specs on this one? That's wild, almost 200 more HP than what the torque maxed out at! Those big heads are what's reducing the torque but the upper HP sure likes it! 4.56 plus six speed in a light Nova sounds like that car is going to be a hoot and a half with 659.4 HP on tap to drive! Reducing the piston speed has to be helpful in these combos as well by freeing up some horseys to spin the engine. Combine that with the shorter stroke that the explosion pushes down further than an engine that would have an longer stroke and with the longer rod ratio to let it run on pump gas makes these really attractive little power houses. And quit making your videos private! LOL JK, they're your videos do what you want with them, I'll get over it.😎
