Do you think that a Gen 1 SBC 350 could reach Gen 3 LS power levels approaching or exceeding 1000HP with forced induction via a turbocharger(s) ? I think that Richard Holdner was easily able to exceed 600HP with twin turbos.

What heads, valves, cam specs & was it advanced? Also what rods & were the pistons special? I have been building 355s with Vortec heads,,202/160 valves, pocket ported ect. 425 with close to 11.1cr on 91 octane. What's the advance curve look like & is it all mechanical or do you run any vacuum advance? Looking to build better tq engines for suvs & pickups. Thanks

Pair that top end with a 400 crank bottom end and you’ll make even more HP and TQ. Outside of lower rotating speeds (potentially long engine life) I don’t see the benefits of de-stroking an engine.

In my opinion nothing better than the 427, I have a couple engine designs I would like to try to build but I don't have the money, it requires making a crank and a cam to match each other, also in my opinion, combustion engines are nothing more than artificial life.

A buddy of mine built a 353- 400 block with 327 crank. It had such a big cam in it that it sounded like two motor cycle engines bolted together. It idled at like 1500rpm with a 4/7 swap cam it pulled@ 9" vacuum. 575hp at 7100rpm. But what was impressive was the torque curve was dead flat from 3500 on up. We put it in a cj7 jeep 😂

That's not a 400 block it's a 360 maby bored out but it'd be easier to run a 400 block the reason I say this is the 400 small block has three freeze plugs on each side instead of two like the 350!!! But your idea is a good one lots of Rs and ponies but less torque of course!!! Excellent build since torque break's parts but ponies can push your tushy down the road faster!!!!

Thanks for commenting. This looks different than the conversation 3 core plug 400 GM block because it is an aftermarket GM Bowtie block. It is also a one piece rear seal block and yes, has 4.125” bores, standard. Siamese cylinders too.

Yeah…most got it backwards because some folks got their rocks off by saying “stroker”. My son and I bought a used Dart block at 4.145” bore and used his 3.80 SCAT crank and super lite rods in 3/8 mile dirt track engine and made way more power than the tires could use. 375+ inches

If I recall correctly, the flaw of the SB 400 was that several cylinders were siamesed and the engine was prone to overheating. The 400 did not do well in the trucks.
@ceperformance
@ceperformance 14 күн бұрын
It’s interesting to always hear these stories of overheating yet never encountering it in my 30 years of engine building. Almost all 400’s came in Motorhomes and pick up trucks. My belief is a good cooling system solves any inherent problems. Thanks for commenting :)

Thanks for commenting. Our goal was not to make maximum power, maximum torque or set any records. We set out to build a budget minded, mild street engine that could run efficiently without high octane fuel. The benefits of this combination with the large bore, short stroke and very long rods, allow for high compression without detonating. For how mild a cam and great drivability this delivered we’re very happy with the results.

I built something like that but used a set of Rhodes two stage lifters and double roller rockers . Below 2700 rpm it gave what ever your cam lift was above 3300rpm they added near 40k lift to cam with 1.5 rockers . As long as valves clear try 1.6 and Rhodes..

You’re right about that on the production 400 blocks. This one was an old GM Bowtie block that I bought from a scrapper. It was a tired old engine that needed to be rebuilt. When we found that it was made with the main bearing size of a 350, it was then possible to spacer it down to a small journal to fit in the 283 steel crankshaft :) Thanks for asking!

Not a SBC But....My Dad and I were into Oldsmobiles when I was in High School, Late 80's. He had a '68 442 (look up the terrible bore/stroke on that thing). I had a '68 Cutlass S, factory 4 speed/350 4 barrel. The 350 Olds has a slightly shorter stroke and slightly bigger bore than a 350 Chevy. I worked at a machine shop in HS so I built a 403 Olds (same stroke as 330/350 Olds, but with a huge bore (standard bore 4.351!). The one I built was .040 over so bore 4.391! Those pistons were huge! Put the 350 heads on it (had to drill out head bolt holes, the 403's have bigger head bolts, and put in the biggest valves we could. Ran low 13's at 106 mph all day on 235/70R14 street tires. Even missed third gear (went into first gear!) a couple times and didn't hurt it. Valves would float at around 6400, so that was the redline. I beat the piss out of that thing, Best engine I ever built. Also built a couple 455 Olds, the worst engines I ever built!

That’s was a great video . As an owner of 2 german v8 cars (a 2000 m5 with very complicated engine design- a 5.0L quad cam , quad variable valve timing , 8 throttle bodies and a lateral g activated oiling system ) this old American v8 , simplistic in design but very robust and easy to work on made more power and torque than my m5 (which has 400hp and 370Lb/ft which ain’t bad for only 348Lb including accessories). After a complete rebuild of that , I find myself more interested in the classic American v8 engines - lol.

@ceperformance that's awesome, I've seen the options labeled for LS motors and have always wondered why they are so much more expensive than other platforms. I'll definitely go solid for my build. How is the maintenance on them? Would you consider this motor daily driveable?

Reliability is important to me and I have no issue with solid lifters for daily drivers. Set the lash very accurately and it will last a very long time without maintenance. Use good adjustable rockers!
