In a job interview, it’s common to be asked “what are your greatest weaknesses?” This could also be phrased as: “What is one thing you would change about yourself if you could?” Or, “what would your previous manager say you have trouble with?”
Talking about your weaknesses in an environment where you’re expected to focus on your accomplishments can feel awkward and risky. You don’t want to say something that could make an employer think you’re less qualified. Taylor, an Indeed Evangelist and resource on recruiting, offers 4 example weaknesses that you can feel confident sharing in an interview.

This is very helpful! In the past I have shared that people pleasing is a weakness. It is considered a "difficult" personality trait, but I can see that it could be a strength in a particular context, as well as a weakness.

Please do not say that your greatest weakness is being "too detail orientated". That is bad advice. When responding to this question do not try to sneak in something that's actually good and try to play it off as a weakness. Another common answer people tend to give that is not good is "I'm too much of a perfectionist". Be honest with yourself and with the interviewer. List an actual weakness but make sure to explain how you are working to overcome this.

Whenever I am honest, I have a tendency to be very blunt and my honesty would unintentionally hurt others which is why my biggest weakness is communication. I can be way too blunt

is independence in a team setting a weakness? My manager asked me why i did a certain process differently than how i was taught. I answered that both processes arrive at the same result and my process made things easier and made me more efficient as it was quicker and allowed me to get to more work.

That is a good question, since there is a lot of focus on being part of a team. I hope you receive an answer because I wonder if certain companies would find this problematic. On the other hand, it might be seen as creative by other companies :)

Honestly this seems like really bad advice for a job interview. To boil down the gist of what is being said here, 'you should give a strength as a weakness.' Interviewers will see through this charade and note that you are covering up some legitimate weakness. Better advice would be to give something that isn't a not so subtle humble brag (i.e. stop saying your biggest flaw is that you are a perfectionist) and then explain why this shouldn't be a big concern for the position, or how you are working to improve your skills in this area. The main reason why recruiters ask this question is to gauge your honesty and how aware you are of your own limitations (and yes everybody has some) in the interview. Disguising a self-compliment as a weakness undermines the entire point of this questioning and comes across as being arrogant.

Being a field service welder and machinest for massive mining equipment; if my first answer to the question what is my biggest weakness was, "focusing to much on details" I would automatically be asked to leave the interview. Even if that meant spending to much time on the finer details. Because the details in my line of work are absolutely critical. Sorry but not sorry, almost all of these answers are horrible for the blue collard hard working class. If your career is in industrial, mining, construction, engineering, or maintenance I highly suggest not taking his advice. This seems more for the office type geek answers. Or everyone deserves a prize at the end of the day type work.

I get it that most CEOs and managers seem to be white men, and the sizes of desks and even the work day is geared toward the comfort of the average hetero married white man. What I don't get is why society literally expects everyone else to strive to be just like white men. Let's focus on the strengths of those who aren't white and male please? For instance, the default in peoples' minds for who is the authority is usually male, and white. Let's start seeing women and people of color as leaders in their own right. Having to work twice as hard to get half as far is ridiculous and exhausting. The extrovert ideal can take a hike too. Most of the introverts I know, while quiet and possibly not likely to boast, are often reading and have innovative ideas, yet are passed by for those who are gregarious and *seem* more able to lead. Louder=/= leader. How about that ridiculous idea that working more hours means being more productive? The average worker has about three hours of focus for an eight hour day. Forcing workers to stay even longer does not ever increase productivity. There's a reason this is called the burnout culture. Hopefully it's becoming obvious to most that many white men are being promoted not based on their skills and abilities. So much sloppiness is overlooked in some of these men to simply have other white men by the sides of the white male leaders already in place. It's time for new faces in leadership positions, faces that reflect the melting pot that is the diverse United States of America.
