There is another tactic I would add (or at least common instance of a discovered attack on the bishop) Anytime your opponent pins your knight on f3/f6 to your queen but doesn't move their knight to f3/f6 themselves. If you have a bishop on c4/c5, you can take their F pawn with check and when the king takes the bishop, you check the king with your knight opening up the queen and when they move the king you pick up their bishop. You aren't quite "winning" a piece but you win a pawn and stop them from Castling and can gain a nice little bit of initiative.

1 e4 e5 2 Nf3 d6 {Philidor} 3 Bc4 Bg4 4 Bxf7+? Kxf7. Similar to Legal's mate, but without the other knight. Trouble is, Black guards both squares White's knight could check from. If Ng5+, the rather obvious 5 ... QxNg5 gives Black a big advantage. White doesn't even win the bishop by QxBg4, because Black's queen now defends it. If 5 Nxe5+, then 5 ... dxe5 6 QxBg4, and Black is up a knight for 2 pawns. 6 ... Nf6 and White's queen must move again.

In the second version of the Noah's Arc trap White can get a little bit of a compensation by taking with the Bishop on f7 (check), spoiling Black's castling, and then Qh5 check, picking up a second pawn on e5.

For Noah's Ark trap: You can move your bishop to f7 which the king has to move which then the king can't castle, and that is a benefit but its sad that you still lose your bishop but it is somewhat revenge.

6:01 - The trapped White bishop could take the Black king's bishop pawn. The Black king has to take it and will no longer be able to castle and may also be slightly exposed.

I'd add one more, which has gotten me more times than I care to admit: knight fork on c7 (or f7 or f2 or c2, with protection if necessary) attacking a rook and either the king or the queen. It doesn't really count here, since he said these were ways to win bishops and knights.

Hi Nelson, in the example at 7:03 would black Nh5 work instead of capturing with Nd5? My thinking is that all of the squares available for white's bishop are threatened and the piece can be captured for 'free'. Really enjoying the content, thanks for the tips!
@ChessVibesOfficial
@ChessVibesOfficial 3 жыл бұрын
Actually Eoin if you play Nh5 it's a blunder! The problem with Nh5 is that white's bishop can now just take your bishop on e7 and they would still have their knight on d5 to defend the bishop and we would be in big trouble. That's why it was important to take their knight on d5, because then if Bxe7, we can simply take it back with our own knight. Hope that made sense!

P-R3 is sometimes useful, to kick a bishop that's already on your N4. And after 0-0, h3 is useful to prevent future back-rank mate (and h3 doesn't unguard anywhere coz Pf2 guards g3). But it seems to be rarely a good idea to do it to deter a bishop. There's usually something better to do. E.g. after 1 e4 e5 2 Nf3 Nc6 3 d4 exd4 in the Scotch, 4 a3 to deter ...Bb4+ is not best; c3 deters it too and is better, or you could take a pawn with Nxd4.
