Great video! Knew most of them, but a refresher is always good. For next time, can I suggest to group terms that refer to similar topics together? Like, in this list the term "bad bishop" is #5, but "good bishop" is #34, or also "connected pawn" (#16) and "isolated pawn" (#43) etc. It just makes a bit more sense to cover them together to better reinforce the idea.

You forgot En passant. It is a special pawn capture that can only occur immediately after a pawn makes a move of two squares from its starting square, and it could have been captured by an enemy pawn had it advanced only one square. A pawn on the fifth rank is granted for one turn the option to capture an adjacent file opposing pawn's 2-square advance that passes over the capture square of the fifth ranked pawn.

he didn't forget En Passant, 'En Passant' is a rule, not a term, much like how he didn't include Castling, because that's just a rule you learn. although i understand where you're coming from, there's not much point to including a rule in a video about terms that beginners might not be aware of, because En Passant is something included in any ruleset of Chess made by a reputable producer. anecdotally, a travel set i bought to play at work didn't include En Passant or Castling in the included rulebook, THAT'S an 'unforgivable' mistake.....

Regarding #15 "Combination": I've always read that the difference between that and a tactic is that a combination includes a sacrifice; a tactic may or may not. One term I don't think you covered was "Hanging Pawns". I've seen different definitions (some of which contradict each other) but I think it would be something like this: "Two pawns on adjacent files, isolated from the rest of the pawn chain, with the two files being semi-open for the opponent." What a mouthful. Definitely easier to show than describe. The term also always confuses me because you can have hanging pawns while neither of the pawns is hanging. Huh? Thanks for the video, Nelson. I think I knew all these terms. Since I know so much, why am I such a crappy player? Oh well.

Dear sir, your present video session on chess terms is very interesting and instructive too. It is must for every serious player as players donot know every term. I know many of the terms but not exactly all. What fascinated me is your breathless explanation commentry which is truely a rare phenomenon as it is difficult to go on speaking on rampage speedily uninterrupted. Truly exceptional. Looking forward for such session ahead. Thanks and regards. Dmbhangaonkar

Your definition of X-ray is incorrect. An X-ray generally refers to attacking a piece through another piece. A skewer is a _type of x-ray_ that refers to attacking a lower value piece through a higher value piece. A skewer is a simple tactic like a fork that gives immediate and obvious material advantage, an x-ray is more subtle and may or may not lead to different outcomes. For instance, let's say I have a defended bishop attacking another bishop, and a knight lies behind that bishop along the same diagonal. I have x-rayed the knight through the bishop. With no other information about the state of the board, this is neither a pin per se, or a skewer. For instance, if the knight is defended and nothing else is attacking it, it is not a pin; if the bishop is defended and nothing else is attacking it, it is not a skewer. In either case the opponent would be happy to continue playing elsewhere on the board and simply capture my bishop if it captured their bishop. But if either piece was left undefended, or more attackers were piled on, then depending on the state of the board, there are a number of tactics that may follow. If the bishop is undefended and I capture the bishop with my bishop (or alternately I add an additional attacker to it and we end up trading such that my bishop is the last to take), it's done with tempo because I am now attacking the knight. Conversely, let's say the bishop is actually defended and cannot be captured directly. Instead, I capture the knight behind it with a rook; the bishop is used to capture the rook but is left undefended, and I come out +1 by capturing the bishop with my bishop.

My understanding was that an X-Ray is a potential skewer, or potential pin; there are pieces in the way and as soon as those clear the pin/skewer is revealed. It's hiding under the current position.
@georgebush6002
@georgebush6002 2 жыл бұрын
I think what you describe is an X-ray; however, it is also used to describe a skewer and a piece defending another piece despite there being an enemy piece between them.

I heard all those terms, some like titles and time controls I didn't know but I knew they had either different ratings or time controls. I'm rated around 1800 USCF and study chess and been in club so I been exposed to these terms which for a game chess has a lot you could have probably made a bigger list with semi open game and terms like fish and zugsswein. Patzer and pigs on the seventh and dubious move. Just to name a few chess words.

Passed pawn? I've heard two definitions: 1) A pawn with no opposite color pawn in its way on a file. 2) A pawn with no opposite color pawn, AND that can't be taken by an opposing pawn on the way to the opposite side of the board (this definition I heard by you in another video).

What's the difference between a backwards and isolated pawn?
@peterdevlin3295
@peterdevlin3295 Жыл бұрын
Backwards pawns don't necessarily have to be isolated; backwards pawns can have advanced neighbors but isolated pawns don't have any neighbors. Also, isolated pawns can be advanced ahead of distant neighbors that may eventually diagonally make their way to a supporting position (or in other words, reconnect if it's easier to think of isolated pawns as disconnected).

Well, there was definitely more than a handful of new terms for me though I think this list is somewhat unbalanced. Like skewers and x-rays could have been one item as they're just different terms for the same thing, but you left out doubled pawns and went straight for tripled pawns. So all in all, great list but it could have been structured better.

Bro I'm a noob 1000 and ik all of these terms. Definitely not as instructive as ANY of your other videos. Maybe you were reaching for content with this one- evident by the many repetitive terms. The enjoyable aspect was the history and background of the game of chess. Maybe focus on that next time, instead of trying to make it seem informational. (I don't think any beginner to chess is gonna find this informative, or they forget everything in 5 mins) Still appreciate the effort you put into this summary, but sometimes no video is better than a forced one.
@goldeer7129
@goldeer7129 2 жыл бұрын
Well, this video is gonna be less useful than some other ones, as those are rather just terms, names you give to stuff. I don't agree that "no video is better than a forced one" and the aspect of "make it seem informational", "I don't think any beginner to chess is gonna find this informative". This is still an interesting video, if you already knew 100% of them (it can happen at higher or lower ratings) it's probably almost useless, but that's simply not the case of everyone. You learned all those chess terms somewhere sometime, this video combine 75 of them in one video. Introducing terms can act as a reminder of the existence of certain tactics and principles, that could be forgotten or unknown before, as well as improving your knowledge about the world of chess.
