4-CYLINDER CATASTROPHE? - Mercedes-AMG C43 - Review

The new Mercedes-AMG C43 is here and it comes with ... a 2.0 liter 4-cylinder? Oh boy. Stopping short of the controversy behind the new C63 AMG's powertrain, even the "lesser" C-Class has to mourn the loss of cylinders. Gone is the Inline-6, and new is a turbocharged 4 banger with "F1 technology". Spoiler alert, that last part is marketing bull*!
But we can't judge a car before we test it, so in today's review we're taking a close look at the new Mercedes C-Class exterior, interior, and see how well this C43 AMG drives out on our fun roads! Can Mercedes-AMG make the 4-cylinder work, or will it falter when compared to lesser priced competitors such as the BMW M340i and Cadillac CT4-V Blackwing? Oh, and what the heck is that price tag? Before we test the new C63, let's take a look at the slightly less sacrilegious new C43 AMG, also now powered by a 4 banger. Would you still consider the new C43 if with competitors offering V6 and I6 options? Even with the price differential? Let us know!

Hell no lol, 340i tops this any day of the week. Audi on the other hand is old now and its awaiting for a new model.

I think Mercedes is leading the charge here into what the next gen performance dailies ought to all be about. I’m a Z4M Coupe one here, so I know all about what raw, naturally-aspirated inline-6 raw performance cars are all about, but I think the future of dailies is mild-hybrid 4-cyls. Perhaps Merc’s formula of turbo asist is not the right approach over BMW’s belt assist for example, but my 350hp Stage II 328i Touring changed my mind about the potential of 4-cyls and I praise them for being early to the game with it. I hope BMW will follow suit and put out some 350hp+ mild hybrid 4-cylinders with perhaps forged internals in the next few years. The transition might feel awkward right now, and is likely held back by the marketing departments who only know how to sell more cylinders = more money - but I think we’ll look back at 6-cylinder/8-cyls in a short few years and see them for what they are: ancient and oudated.

@@mbradea Please no lmao, inline 6 is iconic BMW and I do not want them going 4 cylinder for their whole lineup. There will be a 540e 4 cylinder hybrid with 320-330 hp range so people who want that can get that. U literally will 99% of the times not even use the full potential of the car in a daily driving scenario, so all there is left is sound, which 4 cylinders do not have.

AMG has lost their way. Thankfully I own a 2020 E63s V8 Twin turbo. Mercedes will never convince me or true AMG owners to buy 4 or 6 cylinders in cars that were V8s. BTW the 43s..53s are really not full AMGs...the real performance begins with 63..65...etc

Mercedes as a whole seems to have completely lost their way. From weird EVs to misguided AMGs and a lack of build quality, I really hope they're able to turn the ship around and get back on track... they have so much potential. And I agree, the C43 really is an "AMG Lite". I've had the pleasure of testing the '21 E63S Wagon a few years back and it was incredible, love your car!

you say that kinda bs where as in the past we had all sorts of amgs from a c30 to c32 c36 c43 c55 e50 etc... so all of those weren't real amgs because they didn't start with a letter 6? What an ignorant individual. Everything with at least 6 cylinders that gets the amg treatment (suspension, exhaust, transmission) is an amg, end of it. You want a V12 in a c class or what? Days of big engines are gone and car makers aren't doing this cause they feel like it. They're being forced to

The T4 doesn't bother me as MB is squeezing plenty of power from depleted displacement. The ride quality is underwhelming, the infotainment is user unfriendly and it's blandly designed. The M340i, Genesis G70 with the 3.3 and TLX Type S offer much more engaging drives, lively steering and, well, superior to this. MB can do better and has the appropriate parts in their toolbox; they opted not to use them here.

And that's what really frustrates me. Mercedes has all the parts and knowledge to make some of the best products on the market but they just refuse to do it. Instead, they make odd product planning decisions and cheapen out wherever possible...

Bought a 2015 E63s last year with 11k miles for 70k. Car is new, just a few years old. Why buy a new POS, when good finds are still out there, and for less money?

I actually enjoy the look of this car! Stealthy, Classy & Sporty. While you guys don't like the 4 Cylinder 2.0L Turbos, I've actually enjoyed the one that's in my Equinox for the past 5 years, and I would love to have it in a car that sounds good paired with manual shifting & paddles.

Actually you're right, the C43 having as much displacement as the legendary domestic muscle powerhouse, the Chevy Equinox, is quite impressive! Jokes aside this car with an inline-6 would be fantastic but well, here we are.

TBH, I dont like a 2.0 I4 because of its sound and also, the reliability should be naother concern, I am looking for 3 series or c class as my next buy, not the amg version, but If I would get one then I would surely go for M3 becuse: S58(2JZ of modern era) Sound. But, Kudos to mercedes for making 4 cyl so powerful. I think this type of engines options should be given for 2026 because of emission regulations. And eventually, BMW will have a 2.0l 4cyl in a m3 competition but that time is far from today

that's the dumbest argument I've heard in years. A porsche is nothing that special. Benz made a lot of near 300'000 cars doing the past, like the black series models, s65 amgs, slr mclaren, clk gtr. Porsche is like the most "regular" sports car maker. 100'000 you don't even get a base carrera with 380hp from the factory and you're saying this belongs to porsche lmao cause why would it? They're not building a v10 monster like the GT, 959 or 918 currently, just regular 911s with a huge dealer mark up, cause people are stupid enough to pay so. all premium manufacturers sell 6 digit price models. So what were you trying to prove here
