Chris Ryan you are without a doubt the best golf coach i've seen on the internet. Understanding your audience's needs, you manage to be direct and clear while relaying the details of the overarching concepts you're teaching. Superb stuff. Many thanks.

Hey Chris -- I just played Waialea Country Club (Hawaiian Open course) and hit 6 greens in regulation. Ok, 2 pars and 4 bogies, but the four essential shots video (I wrote notes on each shot) was absolutely a game changer. In know 6 greens is pretty crapola for most golfers, but that was a first for me. My slice has diminished significantly. Can't seem to get out of the sand to save my soul, and need to work with the putter -- BUT I CANNOT THANK YOU ENOUGH FOR THIS VIDEO. Rich

This is a terrific lesson, and I want to thank you for something specifically. You are the first person I have found who addresses the problem of the ball going out to the right as a result of opening the club face in order to gain height. Thank you! This has vexed me for some time. Well done!

Hi Chris, really enjoyed that video, especially the one from thick rough closeto the Green. I wonder if you could do a video re a shot from thick rough but a further out for example, 150 yards? Club choice and how to approach this shot would be very valuable for me and probably plenty of others. Our greenskeeper is growing the rough of this season to make a challenge for the senior cup guys however for a weak female , this is quite a bigger challenge. Wonder can you help thank you so much if you can love your videos.

I noticed that from the rough lie that you cut off your follow through - is this a result of tighter grip and making sure the face does not close?

ChrisRyanGolf Chris which club did you use for 4th scenario - back to the 56?
@joeperez3520
@joeperez3520 3 жыл бұрын
I'm having a very hard time chipping by standing closer to the ball and raising the heel a bit. I find that my strikes feels much more "dull," and the ball travels much shorter. Do you do anything with the way you are gripping the club when you make this adjustment, such as holding the club more in the palm rather than the fingers, reverse-overlap grip, or something else?

Hi Chris. Great vid. Question: is this correct: pitching use bounce, chipping strike ball first then ground. Is that correct. Thanks. Matt
@JT________________
@JT________________ 3 жыл бұрын
Even if you hit the ball first you can still use the bounce (and if you hit the ground first it might be that you still are not using the bounce). A chip shot just a shorter shot, I would say inside 30yds (including roll). But the technique used only depends on the ball flight you want to create, its not that important to know whether its a chip or a pitch.

For the high lob shot... Do you need the ball to be sitting up or on a fluffy lie? I imagine this would be very difficult on the firm fairway? Do you also need a lower bounce on your wedge or thin sole to be able to get under it when you open up the face like that? Thanks Chris!

When the club face is opened, can you explain why sometimes the ball goes right, and not at target? Thanks
@ChrisRyanGolf
@ChrisRyanGolf 3 жыл бұрын
Because you have to lower the handle to compensate, if you don’t then the face points to the right, tough to judge but a little practice and you can get the ball heading straight 👍

Most pros seem not to recommend hinge and hold method a la Phil Mickleson. After a lot of practice, it works for me but you say that wrist hinge adds height. One problem I have is with my 50 degree wedge
@rogerwoodward3131
@rogerwoodward3131 3 жыл бұрын
Continued. My 50 wedge goes to high and not far enough. Is this because of too much wrist action?
@ChrisRyanGolf
@ChrisRyanGolf 3 жыл бұрын
Very likely Roger, lots of wrists going back usually means they will be very active on the through swing and this creases height

I forgot to add from that last comment below, that then the instructor or the golfer should be able to put together quick 1- or 2- word keys to subvocalize while building a routine, such as: 1. regular pitch SQUARE (stance, aligned w/ target) MIDDLE (ball @ sternum) 60-6 (60% of weight left, feet 6 inches apart) SLIGHT (very slight shaft lean) ----------- TURN WIDE QUIET (turn body, not just arms, arms/hands wide/low/faraway, wrist pretty quiet) TURN BRUSH WIDE FINISH (body turns to target, club brushes grass without divot, hands still wide, full body turn at finish)

Tx for the clip BUT a suggestion for all golf instructors, not just you: it would be nice to have a written summary below the clip, then we could copy it, edit it, and print it, and take it to the practice area FOR EXAMPLE: 4 ESSENTIAL SHOTS AROUND THE GREEN kzfaq.info/get/bejne/fJ1nmNp2lr6qiaM.html (right handed golfer) 1. normal pitch 56 deg club, but also 52 60 ball lined up with sternum feet maybe 4-6 inches apart, 60% weight left very slight shaft lean aligned to flag/target, maybe left foot slightly back body rotates back and thru like bigger swing, narrow stance helps to do that not wristy, but there is some gathering/cracking thru impact, [IOW little wrist motion but still have feel] check at finish back heel leaving ground, chest facing forward etc. hands relatively wide going back and wide thru, plus body rotation club brushes ground w/o divot [try arms horiz to horiz to start] 2. lob shot 60 deg club common open club, more open for more height, then grip club shot will want to go right, but counteract it by lowering the hands, making the club aim more left need lots of speed and commitment thru the ball [feet about shoulder width, more athletic, aligned roughly to target] bkswing with more wrist cock and uncock and higher/fuller finish lots of the energy is used to get the ball up more than forward [seems quicker tempo, more aggressive] 3. chip and run generally a less lofted club used ball behind (right of) sternum some shaft lean [feet 4? inches apart, 60% weight left] slightly more downward strike stand close to ball, [try < 12 inches from ball?, shaft 75?+ deg?], toe down this results in swing with more consistent contact on toe and club opens and closes less during the swing key on upper body moving/rocking back and forth during swing very little/no wrist action knees and hips are reacting and moving with the swing focus on landing spot for your shot 4. pitch from heavy rough [around the green] common problem to solve is preventing the grass from wrapping around the shaft and twisting the club closed. also, more grass = less distance open clubhead some, not so much as a lob shot be more aggressive and have more speed thru shot last 3 fingers of lead hand has more pressure to help counteract club twisting closed commit your effort to get thru grass [feet look pretty close together, roughly 6 inches apart] [follow thru looks pretty short]
