I’m betting the frog’s AI gets way less laggy when you put blocks over their heads because of the change they made in a snapshot a while back. If I remember correctly, the frogs were initially killing themselves occasionally by jumping down a few blocks at once, damaging them. Then I think Mojang changed it so they wouldn’t do that anymore. So maybe the frog constantly has to calculate where it would land if it jumps right now, causing a ton of lag
@ilmango
@ilmango 2 жыл бұрын
that would explain it. just not sure if the solution to do that many checks all the time is that good xD
@ProfessorThock

Rabbits have always done that and nobody seems to care. I have witnessed a lot of baby bunnies committing suicide on hillsides. I’d like to see them fix that but hopefully not in a way that introduces so much lag.

Add to that the fact that they prioritize jumping to lily pads so the game must be scanning the area around them every time it decides to have them jump.

According to my testing, single candles are actually better than chains when it comes to tiny magma cube filtering, as they are thinner than chains, and can float in mid air.

If you use two different colors of candles, can you place them without support blocks underneath? If that is possible, it would also make building the farm easier.

I've been waiting for a fully automatic light block farm, and while the magma cube spawners seemed redundant back in 1.16, now they make more sense
@sebastianjost
@sebastianjost Жыл бұрын
Shroomlight farms existed before this. They provide good light sources and wood completely automatically too. Frog light farms are definitely less complex though. It's nice to have options
@YounesLayachi
@YounesLayachi Жыл бұрын
@@sebastianjost shrooms farms require TNT duping and bonemeal farm working alongside and give too many items when I only need a light source. But on the flip side, shroomlight farming doesn't require player afking in the nether. So yeah good to have more options, I've been using jack O lanterns xD Gloswtone can be bought directly instead of crafted... In small quantities unless many clerics. Sea lanterns are also an option that I'll be exploring once I set up monument farm (though I don't have monument near base on every world)
@sebastianjost
@sebastianjost Жыл бұрын
@@YounesLayachi true. Either TNT duping or restocking it every so often, which would require sand mining and a gunpowder farm. The farm itself produces logs, shroomlight and everything else can be turned back into bonemeal. Moss farms are great at providing the bone meal and some useful blocks along the way. But then this really turns into a very big project. ...just like a monument farm. I definitely recommend building a design that doesn't require draining the ocean as that takes ages and a lot of sand (or anvils 😅). Bubble column based farms are laggy unless you turn particles down, but they are way easier to build and still work great.

Goats and frogs simulate their jumps before deciding to actually take them (random target position, lots of collision calculations). The blocks help because one of the first collision checks fails, so the others are skipped. The honey is a special case, because they do not try to jump at all when they are on honey.

I just realized something the other day: Since slimes are now farmable via swamps, there is actually no need for overworld perimeters anymore. Only if you want very fast farms or want to optimize performance. And considering the increased effort with the increased world height, that's actually quite convenient. I have done two perimeters in my singleplayer world (One for the spawn chunks) and even with trench makers and world eaters, the effort/reward ratio is now passed the point where I consider it worth my time
@JakeWolven

I mean there was never a "need" for perimeters because people played the game just fine without them. It was always a vanity project to optimise something just for the sake of doing it

I don't think you ever needed to dig the chunk where your slime chunk based slime farm is. you can just spawn proof it and dig a few layers for the farm. It's just slower because of the spawning algorithm

@racernatorde5318 2 жыл бұрын
@@flo0778 Sure, you could get started with it, but I suppose the rates of such "farm" was/is only a fraction of what a modern swamp farm produces. So previously you where kind bound to make some sort of perimeter for slimes

I wanted to dig a perimeter with a world eater for the experience but i struggle to find a farm to put in the middle, in the overworld everything seems to be productive enought without, so i decided i'll do it in the nether. Can confirm the spawner farm is annoying to build in survival. The good thing is it's easy to disable the spawner by placing blocks in the layer just above the spawner, which blocks all y-values it can spawn, and then there just needs to be no 3x3 air gaps in that layer. In my case the really annoying bit was the giant natural lava lake directly beneath the bastion's lava trench, and even worse was the soul sand at the bottom so I couldn't just drop gravel over a lot of it.

In my design, I essentially did the second design, where they chase a Iron golem, but there is a large portal frame sending the to the overworld, where they are spawned inside a waterroom, floating up to the top, where there is a signle gap on the top of each sides with a trapdoor, making it so that when they split, then will push out the smalles ones into a new room with frogs inside it . - Two chambers with a color of frogs each on either side of the portal. Water seems like a good substitute for Ice, as it's easier to get.

Does a frog in a minecart eat the small magma cubes? If it does, does it reduce the lag. The logic that I was thinking is that the frogs in minecarts would try to pathfind and increase the chances the frogs eating magma cubes, increase drops like the panda slime farm you built before.

Adding frogs may actually decrease the total number of entities since they eat the magma cubes faster. I'm pretty sure there is a lag-optimal number of frogs for every farm. If frogs are so inefficient because of their movement behavior, minecarts could help. Both of these need testing though

I kind of love how ethical these farms are. The frogs have room to roam and can enjoy infinite food. The 30-frog farm looks a bit cramped, but still. A lot of farms rely on trapping mobs in small spaces, and doing things to animals that would be considered cruel in the real world. I know its just a videogame, and what you do in farms has no bearing on the real world. But the parallels are still there. And its nice to see a farm which is just kinda good to the frogs. Looking forward to farm optimisations ruining this.

I suspect that the reason the frogs are less laggy on honey is because the code that checks if a frog can jump first looks to if it's Y level is an even amount corresponding with a blocks top (ie the frog isn't currently airborne), and the second is if there is room above for a jump. Makes me wonder what other blocks they wouldn't jump on.

For anyone wondering why the frogs aren't producing any froglight when eating magma cubes : The More Mob Heads datapack seems to be the issue : check if it is running in your world or on the server you're playing on. @hsyndicate7585
@hsyndicate7585 Жыл бұрын
I tried out a design based on that but did not scale up well, although it can make a simple to build farm that produces about 5000 frog lights and 500 magma creams with only 320 spawning spaces. So way simpler and a little faster then using a magma spawner. I then have a a larger one which I am still fine tuning that uses strips of portals with spawning platforms in between which is producing 80k and 8k. Neither one uses spawning inside portals and manages to almost keep the nether clear of mobs. What I have found to be the real limiting factor is how fast you can break down the large and medium cubes and get them to the frogs. I am my forth revision of the killing chamber which is near lossless on the magma creams using the and same large spawning setup as above initially was giving me 50k / 4.5k initially. So the biggest improvements in rates comes down to efficiency on the overworld side of things. I have a couple more long run tests to do to make sure it does not break, which can happen due to a uneven distribution of small magma cubes eventually killing frogs from entity cramming. Once I am sure I have that worked out I am going to double my setup on the nether side and see how it goes. I may also try attaching my killing chamber on the large portal based one from Ilmango for comparison. Eventually the limiting factor becomes mspt.

Where should I AFK for the most efficent results in the first farm? Also doesn't powdered snow hurt the frogs?

I noticed a lot of KZfaqrs and posts on reddit mentioning that after long AFK sessions, the frogs are dying to the powdered snow somehow. Does adding honey blocks prevent the frogs from jumping 100% of the time? Would this effectively reduce frog deaths to 0?

Since in the multiplayer server that I play in mobs spawned trough spawners don't have AI, could it work If I just built a lava flow inside open (nether wood) fence gates, like in the skeleton farms, would I get maximum efficiency?

Weird idea but did someone try this lag reduction mechanic on villagers ? I mean frog keep jumping with the snow but generate less lag so maybe it’s less about preventing mob calculation and more about spaghetti code

If you weren't using honey is there any chance that a frog could jump into the powdered snow frequently enough to take damage?

I use my laptop to design farms because it forces efficiency, which means I can then scale them up when switching over to my desktop or server.

so get 3 tadpoles... take them to the biome that changes their colours when they grow... then find a spawner and transport 3 frogs from three diff biomes to the nether. How have they made this more of a pain than a wither farm and a shulker farm?!
@crobar1
@crobar1 2 жыл бұрын
There are 2 types of shulker farm 1D and 2D, 2D are better, but 1D is a lot easier to build and the rated are also good. For single player world 1D is king. Wither farms are easy, unless you decide that you need 10k beacons in your world

How much lag would there be if you used slime blocks instead of honey blocks?
@headlessnotahorseman
@headlessnotahorseman Жыл бұрын
I made the first one, with the spawner. While I am afk, the frogs disappear. After running it most of today 2 out of 5 frogs disappeared. What could be the cause? The only difference is that the floor is made of shroomlight instead of froglight. I am playing on a spigot server which is semi vanilla but has some additional plugins, I'm not sure exactly what.
@a2e5

Could be some anti-lag plug-in doing the despawn. Maybe giving frogs name tags will persuade it to not despawn them?
@headlessnotahorseman
@headlessnotahorseman Жыл бұрын
@@a2e5 I tried that but one disappeared. The server owner thinks it might be a vanilla issue, like the frogs are jumping too high or something.

I noticed that the frogs get damaged by their own jumps! I lost one and started to monitor their health when one frog made a big leap and he lost half a heart. This is, at least in my book, a bug. Frogs are literally killing themselves with hopping to high and getting hurt. EDIT: To avoid fall damage from high jumps, just cover the whole area with powdered snow. It will prevent the frogs from high leaps and they are not taking any freeze damage.
