You make great content! I can't imagine how much time does it take you to make those videos. So I hope your channel gets enough traction to keep you motivated :) I'm learning piano to be able to compose lead melodies on my synthesizer. Could you advise me on the topics which I should learn obligatorily? Also, I'm wondering: if, say, I can spend 1 hour a day on learning piano, what would be the best usage of this hour to get the most out of it? Maybe, it'd make sense to focus on different aspects of piano playing on different days?
@PianoFromScratch
@PianoFromScratch 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks man! Yes it does take a fair bit of time but it's good fun. Only started recently so i'm expecting it to take a while to grow, i'll keep going. Things that will help you compose melody lines (not in a particular order): learning major/minor scales and then eventually more exotic scales, pentatonic scales will be handy, the chords of the scales and all chord inversions which will help you target chord tones in your melodies or vice versa. Chord types starting with maj/min then adjustments like sus chords adding 7s and more. I guess for composition, understanding and being able to find/hear these is more important than technical facility. Above all else though focus on your ears, learn lots of melodies and try to understand them as best you can. If you haven't already there's some stuff in another of my videos that may help (there's time stamps for different sections) kzfaq.info/get/bejne/eqyWrZqcv6evfKM.html Yes mix up your practice time a bit but just be careful though because you don't want to overload on too much information and if you leave one thing for too long, you'll just spend time getting it back. Sometimes it's best to keep reinforcing something until it sticks by coming back to it more often for a while. It can differ from person to person though for different things, sometimes it's trial and error for what works best for you!

I’m having a rough time transitioning between chords in the third practice block (the ‘healing’ set of chords). Gonna keep practicing tomorrow and see if it gets any easier. I love the way they sound when you play them at pace. It’s so pretty. I just need to figure out how to transition between the notes and get my fingers to find the keys.

Couple of tips: 1 - Practice being able to find each position on its own comfortably, make sure to repeat the same fingerings and get your hand position comfortable so you're not straining to get in position. Think of each chord as one block, one shape, find the chord, hand off, look away, and repeat until it's easy and do that for each position 2 - When moving between chords, lift your hand up, relax and re mould the shape before coming down on the new position 3 - Try just the first 2 chords, then 3 and then build up to 4 4 - Think ahead, so once you're on one position, use the whole time to start looking and thinking about the next. Beginners will often wait until it's time to change to even look where's next. Takes practice though 5 - Start slow and get all the other steps solid, particularly the technique and gradually build speed. Come back to it and practice little and often and you should hopefully see some better results soon enough!

I’m deciding now if I should buy a keyboard or not (I used to play in my primary school 20 years ago but it was just a beginner level). I’m quite afraid that I’m going to get tired of it easily and I’m gonna waste my money again like other stuff I bought, so I have been trying to find impossible methods for me to be able to play with my fundamental understanding. . You are just like my teacher now, I scrolled down and watched from the first video. 😊 Thank you for putting a lot of efforts for newbies like us and encouraging your audiences all the time. Seems like there are million of things to learn in music. If I practice a lot (like I have been crazy with video games for a couple of years and I’m good with it), I will be able to play keyboard eventually. So yes I’m gonna buy one!

That it should be for beginner to like and comprehand. I mean u have a real music teacher quality. Lets subscribe you. I mean I am not a big shot that I can help u much .. keyboard tak toh maine chori ke paiso se kharida hai. 😂 ..but lets increase your subscription count at least. Just discovered your “channel” and very excited with how quickly you get into melodies . My question is that I thought you more often play chords in the Left hand and your emphasizing them in the right hand ? T U
@PianoFromScratch
@PianoFromScratch 2 жыл бұрын
It depends what you're playing, what role you have and the arrangement etc. You any be playing as an accompanist with a singer or in a band where you're not playing the melody at all and quite often, here chords would be in the right hand or between both hands. For solo piano what you said is more likely although you may also have the melody in the top part of your right hand and then bass/chords in left and bottom part of your right. There's all sorts of things you can do, that's part of the fun!

Just started playing the piano a couple of weeks ago and have learned so much from your lessons! My daughter was having private lessons, site reading from various books from the age of 7. Is it necessary for me to learn from these books like ‘The joy of the first year Piano’? She was at grade 1 level but has sadly lost interest since lockdown. Not sure if I should encourage her to continue the way she was learning or get her to practice cords like me. Just confused for me and my daughter the best way forward.

In general, my opinion is that I think it’s a good idea to be playing for a short while, perhaps learn a few songs/pieces by being shown for example, and get some actual practical experience before reading. That way you have something to connect what you’re reading too. It’s like learning to talk before you read and write. I know not everyone agrees but a lot of us see it that way too. Of course reading is a very useful skill too and if you’re completely learning on your own without a private teacher, method books like Alfred etc are a useful way in and provide you material to work with. Perhaps a bit of both may be good for you? I think learning chords is fantastic too because it teaches you to get familiar with the keyboard layout and the frameworks for for harmony that it’s very hard for beginners to see when playing pieces with broken up notes and melodies. A bit of both is highly useful. Plus learning chord rhythms is quite fun too and it also how piano is used a lot these days to accompany (much like an acoustic guitar player would learn) Make sure to be learning the fundamentals too, scales and the basic theory etc. If she has lost interest, then to return it’s definitely important to have a balance to the more fun side along with all the staples. Learning piano is a technical endeavour but also very much creative. The technique helps us realise the creativity, but the creativity drives us to develop the technical skills.

Okay boss I just find this I mean it looked simple but finding it hard to execute in even moderate tempo. Just got an idea of mixing finger execution.. like lets take 4 consiquetive notes of simple C scale like GABC Now u try playing them in loop with lets say last 3 fingers.. lets say GA with 3rd 4th then skip note B ..and strike C with 5th.. now strike B with 4th and G with 3rd to reverse the pattern on way back skipping note A this time and loop along. Basically u alternating 4th between note A and B. I find it difficult to loop even at moderately fast tempo. I mean had to set fingers first even to play the sequence correctly.😀 U can try other way round too like starting from G with 3rda skip A strike BC with rest 2 fingers and so on... Or start with right side and do same kinda variation. I find it difficult to execute even though sequence look simple enough and nothing fancy that we dont do normally like skipping a note. 😀 Playing single gap is really easy if u going in linear direction but if u have to loop or return back certain simple combo become troublesome. I found it when I was kinda random playing A blue minor scale. It has GA CD note sequence ..so I tried returning from simple CD trill and got kinda struck in it back to A. So I made these combo loops to practice or like GA CD loop with four finger. Or similar kinda stuff with variable gaps like u can try add thumb with a gap of one note to it like E GA CD loop. It feels different than chords or even like jazzy chords of one note gap on all fingers. Those consequitive notes inbetween makes things different. Actually direction changes creating problem I guess. So kinda practising these kinda combos now a days. At least trying find what kinda get u struck or uneasy. 😀 And its been like almost 6 months into keyboard for me I still havent played a single song just busy with these tit bits. Dunno what gonna happen of me. 🙄 Only god ppls know! 😂😂😂. Well we have multiple gods here right? Gods gang rather. 😜

Your Chord progression and rhythm is not at all for beginners. When you haven't at all any finger training on a keyboard, it's so weird and you are struggling because your hands don't have the finger coordination and you get tired so easily in your wrist. So that's a bit demotivating I have to say. But other than that, again you are a great teacher.
