Ok, finally had a chance to rewatch the video without kids yelling for snacks or drinks, or that someone looked at someone thereby triggering WW3. Good tips, really. Some youtube video I watched a while back mentioned the whole "watch a show or movie you've already familiar with, but in your target language" and I've done it a few times now (side note: it took my kids 30 min or so to realize we were watching Frozen in "not normal talk") but I kept forgetting to switch the language back after. I shall go create a new user on our Disney+ and Netflix and end that difficulty! I've been watching a lot of shows that are filmed in my TL, with and without subtitles. Folk med Angest and Bonus Family have been on my repeat list lately. I'm noticing a huge difference in actually hearing certain sounds. I use podcasts on Spotify for passive listening as well, to try and improve hearing the sounds and cadence of the language, and I'm starting to pick up enough to actually enjoy them as well. Getting my hands on some written material would be nice, but my local library is rather limited in options (as in, they have exactly zero books in my TL and are unwilling to add any based on my interest alone). I don't know about ebooks - they just don't have the right feel or scent, but I've started looking half-heartedly because they may be my only option for a while. I may even get desperate and advertise on social media to find someone reasonably local to just talk to! Also, I've decided to bake chocolate cookies tomorrow while the kids are at school. Best tip!

Reading is my favorite method. I like sitting on my front porch swing . I find it especially fun to read the dialogue parts out loud and try to make it sound authentic. I know I sound awful. That's why I like to wait until there's no one else around. Thank you for the tips. :)

Your videos always kick ass. This one is no exception. I love the cookie gag repetition. I've been a huge snob when it comes to native vs translated content. I tried so hard to only use native Spanish stuff, but so often being an English native speaker leaves us really spoiled when it comes to our quality expectations, particularly when it comes to things that are more common in English speaking countries (superhero movies are the easy example even though I don't really watch TV). I recently broke down and got a Spanish language Sarah J Maas audiobook, and I'm so excited to listen to Spanish now, because it's just better than most of the stuff I was listening to. I still haven't done the repetition thing, since I don't even repeat stuff in English, but I will say being open to English original content is a real positive.

Two other things: -I spend almost all of my Spanish reading time with my kindle, so I never have to worry about having perfect lighting. Having one is highly recommended, not only for the light, but also the ability to quickly look up the odd word you don't know. If anyone IS looking for a first native Spanish language fantasy novel, Príncipe del Sol by Claudia Ramírez Lomelí is pretty solid and easy to read.

I'm generally a snob about this kind of thing too, but there are benefits to using translated content when you are at a certain level, I think. Especially for certain languages. I read translated books when I first started learning Chinese, because the barrier to entry for genuine native Chinese content is just absurdly high.

@@daysandwords I had the opposite experience. I bought it on a whim thinking I would always prefer to read on paper but then fell in love. I still collect books, but I usually read on there (or listen to audiobooks).

@@uamdbro comprehension is a whole different thing. There's plenty of simple native stuff to read in Spanish, and at my level simple isn't really an issue. I'm just talking about enjoyment.

The incredibly annoying, dialog and subtitle mismatch is something that puts me off consuming content like films and shows. It just ends up frustrating me. It seems rampant in shows I would have seen a lot in my native language but is then dubbed in my target language. We live in a world where AI can generate, 90% correct speech to text. Just run through the content once reading subtitles and correct the last little bit manually. It's not rocket science, its really straight forward to create accurate subtitles for what's spoken on screen. Forget language learning the hearing impaired deserve to have subtitles that reflect what's actually being said.

You can use whisper from openai to do this yourself now. It is a little technical to setup and use, but there are people that have setup free websites to be able to. You would have to either have someone check to get the other 10%, or just be content to get it 90% right. The cool thing to me is that it works with podcasts.

They're not just randomly being annoying by the way... Subtitles can never be accurate because they follow rules that dialogue does not follow. There's a book called "Is that a fish in your ear? Translation and the meaning of everything." that addresses why this is.

I mentioned those in my upcoming video (it's already recorded, just not edited) but not the family friendly one... Yes, that is a potential use! Especially if YT could make it so that only adult accounts could turn on the non-family track.

Nice hacks - with the crazy diversion-DIY-lamp and all! Is this a very common tip: talk imaginary conversation with an interesting native speaker, preferably aloud, many times a day. Each time magine someone who is interested in all you have to tell, and who has interesting responses for you. Let it flow - it is a plus if you do it while moving and have no props at hand. Buy chocolate cookies are great!

Thanks, great ideas, especially no.3, it never occurred to me that there were good lights especially for reading. Just on point 1 - be careful about your choice of favourite movie! I picked one anime I loved for multiple views, then a Japanese friend pointed out that all the characters 'talked like truck drivers' as she put it (it was set in a rural area way up north). Probably not the best accent to pick up. One more point on this - netflix has an option for a description voice over (for people with vision problems). This is great for additional input.

Love the reading recommendation. I do actually read a lot in my target language, my difficulty was listening. I work from home, so no commute, and my issue was that headphones and earphones were all so uncomfortable. You recommended a channel to me, Matt Brooks-Green, who made a great earphones recommendation. Game changer for my listening. I think the message here is, set yourself up for success. Create a reading space you really want to sit in and you’ll read, get a comfortable pair of earphones and you’ll listen while you cook, (or whatever). Such basic and yet underrated and overlooked advice.

Yeah I have been saying this to myself lately: "Solve the problem that causes the problem." e.g. I hate mowing the lawn. So I consider it a "problem". It doesn't get done and only becomes less and less desirable to do because it's harder as the grass is longer. But the problem is actually that I hate getting the equipment out and getting it to work... not the actual mowing itself. There are ways to solve the REAL problem that will mean there is no "problem" with mowing the lawn. Also I get you about the headphones... when I discovered the right ones for me, it helped a lot with the commute. Now I don't commute anymore (same as you) but at least my car has bluetooth so it always just starts playing whatever was playing on my phone, which is almost always Spanish... so it cuts out a bit of resistance with setting it up and everything, so that's good.

Never really tried it myself, but I can kinda see the advantages to watching your favorite movie more than once. (by the way, Rango in the b-roll is awesome). Sometimes I know what a character said, but I’m not sure HOW he said it, and I get curious about the language used. So I go back and check, and even compare it with what I thought were the words used. This is great because it allows you to either validate your language or see the room for improvement.

Bribing yourself with cookies and coffee works. I use it to get through my workday too. There is the obvious drawback of gaining wait though 😅. I love that reading light setup you have. It seems like going to the library - at least at mine they have very good lighting and you can comfortably read anywhere. However, like you mention, I am bad at getting myself to read, also in English even. As far as English goes I have a solution - audiobooks or text to speech (I know not everyone can tolerate this but I really like text to speech. The new iOS voices are very nice). The huge drawback to listening to books instead of reading them is you can't lookup words so there's really no way you'll increase your vocabulary but you'll definitely improve upon the words you do know. I think for some languages there are apps that will actually analyze a text (a whole e-book even if you convert it to a text file) and then list words by frequency for you so you can study them before listening or maybe use Anki. Not for Korean though - at least not that I've found. As far as Anki goes - I'm trying a new thing where I just study new words intensely for a week or two and then retire them forever. Sorry for the rambling comment. Good luck with your studies.

In 3 to 4 years I think most audiobooks will be at least partially TTS, but you'll never know that they are. AI can generated a specific human voice for any content and can even add emotion etc. I'm hoping that they figure out to do this with the next GoT book and do it in the late Roy Dotrice's voice. They've got thousands of hours of sample content, so in theory we'll be able to generate the perfect Roy Dotrice narrator, despite him no longer being alive.

I've increased my vocabulary hugely almost entirely through listening. I am trying to transition to reading more, but so far have done quite little in my target language. It's probably a less efficient way of gaining word knowledge but I know it works because I haven't really done anything else yet know way more words in Spanish than I used to.

@@paulwalther5237 Books tend to use longer, more complex sentences and a wider range of vocabulary than everyday speech. The back and forth of conversation also provides a lot of context and redundancy for new words. For those reasons, finding podcasts related to topics you like can be really helpful for picking up vocabulary - even if the topic itself is advanced or specialized, the language around it will be easier. The other thing is that it's ok to not understand everything - learning from context usually means hearing a new word multiple times in different contexts before the meaning fully clicks. Of course, if you want to look things up you need to be able to "hear" the sound accurately enough to google it, even if there's a slight misspelling. If you're not at the point in a target language where you can accurately hear an unknown word well enough to write it in a way google can recognize, developing your ear via listening is necessary to be able to learn the word, either via context or a dictionary. Listening a lot is the only way to get there, but the payoff is huge. I think I would summarize my advice as, find easier level listening material, go with the flow, and don't feel like you have to study every new word you hear in a given piece of media because repeated exposure will do most of the work of locking it in - and when your ear is developed it's MUCH easier to just "hear" a new word accurately enough that you recognize it the next time you hear it, allowing you to associate meaning more quickly, etc... it's a virtuous cycle. And finally, the more words you already know well the easier it is to remember new words. So really all of this gets easier over time. Good luck sorry this comment was so giant.

Ok I have a couple questions. What should someone like me do with step number one when there isn’t any movie on the planet dubbed into my target language. There is reading material but not very much at all. There’s only 1 full length motion picture in my target language as well. KZfaq is hard to find good content in my target language, only a few people have posted things about and in my target language. This being Samoan btw

I feel like rewatching content is a personal thing. I know kids like to do it. I vaguely remember enjoying watching the same shows/movies over and over as a kid. But then it went away. But some of my friends I've noticed (only some) still really enjoy rewatching shows/movies. I totally get how it will benefit you to rewatch stuff but personally I haven't been able to make this a part of my routine.

Whenever I watched something more than once, the second time around I got to appreciate subtle aspects of dialogue and other details so much more. I feel it allows you to focus your attention on things you otherwise wouldn't the first time because get sucked up by the storyline or your focus goes to understanding the plots, and so on

It's been a while but Emil Hansius was probably my favourite... "unfortunately", he has a very northern accent (which is a lot of the reason that he's so popular... Swedes love the funny sound of it)... Gordon Dewoon is pretty good but can be a bit hard to understand. Oh "Uppdrag Mat"! Definitely one of the best... and a "normal" accent, very interesting videos too. There's heaps to go on just with those 3 channels.

I literally can't afford to keep making month long videos that only 20,000 people watch. BTW I actually said that there was a video coming about the nitty gritty of it... I said that in this video. Sorry, but it feels like you're complaining about not getting the very content that I said you'd be getting.

@@daysandwords Sorry, may have been badly worded - my repetition comment wasn't an opinion about *your* content, I meant that was my personal taste about consuming movies and tv shows for language learning and even for that very reason would be interested in learning more about the uses of repetition... I didn't even mean it as a request, but rather since you mentioned it in the video and to another commenter, as a support - saying hey good idea for a video, looking forward to it when it comes out. No complaints here about your content.

Oooooh right, sorry. The thing is... content can actually get more interesting if you repeat it enough. It's weird, it seems boring, but then suddenly you see the film on a whole new level (assuming it's good to begin with).

@@daysandwords Very interesting perspective - most people who talk up repetition will say that it's a necessary chore, not so much a way of getting a deeper experience with a piece of media in an enjoyable way. Definitely sounds like something that rewards quality in ones choice of art, which is not a bad thing. Count me intrigued!

Of course, recipes are a great idea! The only thing is, they are a bit more advanced, e.g. "dice" or "braise" and those kinds of words.

Personally, I watch videos in domains I know very well so I can focus on my target language. For example, I watch a lot of maths videos. I studied maths so I understand well what is said and there are many animations, so it is really easy for me to understand, even if I am a beginner in the language.

You are my favorite language learning channel because you take pride in making quality videos; both content and appearance. However, that's why your channel also frustrates me. I want more videos and I know you also have a life outside of KZfaq and quality cannot be produced on mass. Nevertheless, I want more.

There are actually more coming soon. I've finally put together a system for getting videos of similar quality out a bit more regularly, but I've been busy with preparing for the trip. However you should see more soon!

chocolate cookies are probably better than chocolate chip cookies. unfortunately, i just got back from the store with pillsbury chocolate chip cookies you bake in the oven. then i saw this video. if i had known… then i could have looked for chocolate cookies.
