In the US Spring and Fall library book sales. One library had 9 boxes of foreign language books. I held onto the a Spanish box while dealers fought over the others. Got as many as my bag would hold. Made the rounds this Fall and set until Spring. Now to get that microphone for reading practice.Thanks Lamont.

Earphones/ headphones was an absolute game changer for my learning, you’re right. I have a set of the bone conductor ones, just because I find them to be comfortable enough to wear all day, meaning I don’t even have to think about putting them on/in. When you can quite literally press a button on the side of your head anytime you have some ‘dead time’ and immediately have your target language in your ear it’s amazing how many hours a day you can get in. Removing even the tiny barriers to consume the language can make a massive difference.
@berkanathurisa

I've been searching forever for earbuds that don't irritate me after 20 minutes. The bone conductor ones seem fairly expensive, but at this rate, I've probably spent more than double on various earbuds that are now just collecting dust in a drawer. Maybe Santa will bring me some bone conductor earphones this year...

I ended up buying two pairs of headphones and the car adapter pretty much for the purpose of language learning. I got a nice comfy pair of headphones to use the majority of the time, and then a cheap pair of ear buds that I keep in my purse. So I basically have no excuse not to be listening to something at all times. That plus being at a level where I can understand audiobooks and podcasts means I'm easily getting in 1-2 hours a day of listening practice.

Great video. Seeing Babbel in the thumbnail cracked me up. I get an email daily from them about how "today is the last day for 60% off". Their marketing is soooooo intense. Also if your product is always 60% off, it's not 60% off, that's the normal cost. Anyway, great video!

Honestly I think I stuffed up by putting Babbel in the title... I just wanted something that was recognisable as a "symbol" for language learning, but it seems to have not worked at all, given the views on this video.

Nice vid as always. I wonder if it's possible to take the extra step and use noise cancelling headphones, in order to really hear yourself from the 3rd person. Might be great for improving accent.
@daysandwords
@daysandwords 6 ай бұрын
Yeah, you definitely could use noise cancelling headphones, which is what Matt actually suggests in his video, but I just find this to be a 1% improvement for a lot of expense (if you don't already have them), and they could even be a hindrance. The problem I have with them is that since they are "judging" which sounds to cancel, you get this weird effect that somehow feels artificial. You can also NEVER fully cancel how your voice sounds to you, because the sound obviously goes through your throat and mouth, which are connected to your ears. The in between headphones would just be isolated ones that are not actually active noise cancelling, like good DJ headphones. I find just ordinary headphones to be a nice balance of being able to tell what sounds I am really uttering, whilst still feeling like it I who am controlling that sound. I guess I would say that normal headphones feel a little bit like driving a car with real time feedback, whilst noise cancelling ones feel a little bit like you can't actually feel what gear you're in anymore.

I use my second language phone for tandem and hello talk. When I don't understand an audio message from a native speaker I turn on Google translate on my primary phone and hit the mic button. And play the audio from the message from my secondary phone. That way if they can't explain it in my native language I can still understand what they're saying.

Personally I don't feel that very much is necessary. Some people find less than 80% to be painful but I actually don't mind, because it's just on the background anyway. Less than 10% would not really be doing much but it's still better than NOT listening to the language. At some point you have to go from 5% to 6% so you might as well just keep listening.

There are plenty of reasons to learn a language aside from visiting the country in question. What about French/Belgian comics that haven't been translated to English? Books? Movies? There is a ton out there that hasn't been translated to English or the English translations are very bad. If not French, then German, Italian, Swedish, Spanish... tons of culture out there, waiting to be unlocked.

Earbuds: check ✅ A microphone with an usb output: no, but I use to record myself while practicing shadowing and then I listen to the audio while carefully analysing my pronunciation. Even though it isn't 20 USD, I'd also recommend having a tablet or an Ipad with a pen (it can be of tremendous help if you study by taking notes and also for "carrying" a busload of ebooks with you. By the way, my thing is the Finnish language 😅

@daysandwords @daysandwords I actually spent half my elementary school years in Germany. American, dad was US Air Force, so I was in Ramstien Air base for 3ish years off and on. Buuuut I don't remember most of it. But I am attracted to learning German, not just wanting to learn a foreign language, which you talk about. This is my third try learning, but I'll actually do it this time. Bought German Harry Potter #1 on audible, so I'll start listening to that a lot, and find some basic German podcasts. ....... now my only issue is actually learning vocab, and grammar (genders, tenses, whatever a subjunctive is, etc). Any tips??
@daysandwords
@daysandwords 5 ай бұрын
Well learning vocab will take care of itself with enough reading and listening. Genders as well. The only thing you might need to deliberately check about genders is when nouns SEEM to shift gender, but it's actually just that they are changing case (cases basically refers to a noun's position in the sentence, e.g. a woollen jumper... is made out of wool... not woollen.) But German has them more often and is more picky about them being right. For this reason, genders can get confusing. BUT, as long as you understand that that can happen and you do enough listening and reading, then you will pick it up. Subjunctive and various verb tenses that English doesn't have, you can just learn a bit about it and then again, pick it up. In short: most things will be picked up in 2000 hours of exposure, but some things will be picked up much BETTER if you first check an explanation of them. BTW, the subjunctive is easy enough to understand as in the English, "If I were to tell you..." - it COULD be "was" because "I was" but in that case it's "If I were / if he were / if it were like that..." etc. Only in other European languages, a lot, if not ALL verbs have them. In English it's only "to be" that gets a subjunctive. Listen listen listen listen. Read read read. Listen. Read. Speak. Repeat.

Eh... You can "hear to yourself in real time through your headphones while talking to the mic" with any mic... You just need to connect your headphones to the computer and use a software that allows you to listen to the system not disabling your own input device, like with Pulsemeter, for example.

If you record your voice and play it back, it sounds different to what you hear through your ears. Your ears are behind your mouth, so the sound you hear is different to what people standing in front of you hear. With a microphone, you can listen to how you actually do sound.
@fuwa7358
@fuwa7358 6 ай бұрын
You don't hear your voice like it actually sounds, so in order to objectively measure how well you're speaking it needs to be recorded or played back to you, but most ways of playing back your microphone in realtime introduce delay that makes it almost impossible to speak(look up speech jammer to see what I mean) so being able to have no delay realtime monitoring means you can try to mimic someone's speech and adjust in realtime

It helps with shadowing real time. Look for more detailed videos on it (the one by Matt versus Japan is good). Most people can’t hear their own voice so well when they’re taking. Having the mic project it into your ears real time helps that. Not a must have but if you’re working on pronunciation it’s very useful.
