I got married at 40! Now happily married for 13 years. My husband is the most terrific man, and the best dad to our 2 daughters,. We had our first baby at 41, and our second baby at 43. I did several novenas to St. Joseph and he came through! Don’t worry, if marriage is your vocation, you will find Mr. Right. Stand your ground. And please be picky! Never settle. You are worthy!

I'm Nigerian and I come from a culture where a woman who isn't married at a certain age is looked upon with pity and sometimes considered to be of "bad" behavior, hence no man "wants" her. The dating pool for Catholics is really low and even then, getting someone who understands your need for chastity in courtship is even lower! I'm going to be 37 in October and one of the first advice I get from people is to stop being picky and just say yes to the next person, or go for deliverance because I'm being tormented with the evil spirit of singleness. It gets to me a lot and I've spent many a nights in prayer and tears begging God to take this "curse" away from me. However, lately, I've come to cherish this time of my life as one where I can grow closer to God, discover myself fully and find peace with life in general. Do I still pray for marriage? Yes. Do I feel feel cursed without it? No! Thank you for this video Lilian.

Great video!! I totally relate to the timeline thing. I’m 38 and turning 39 at the end of the year and getting married in 7 weeks. It’s all about God’s timing. I’m so glad my life shifted this way. I remember a few years ago on Twitter, this guy told me I was immoral because I was single because by the time I’d get married my eggs would be too old and I’d be putting my future kids at risk and who would marry someone SO old. 🤦‍♀️👎🏻 so ridiculous. God’s plan works out, we can trust he has the best pathway for us!

This hits home. Being single can be beneficial by learning about yourself more and reflecting what you look for in your future relationship. It took awhile to learn that it is okay to be single for a long periods of time. Not gonna lie, those “what am I doing?” feelings do come and go when attending to a wedding or seeing one of your friends getting engaged. Oh, and it does not help when raised in a Hispanic family where they expect their offsprings to get settled in their mid-20’s. The pressure is real y’all. I hope to find my one and only but while I wait for her, I am more than happy to continue to serve God by dedicating my musical talents in playing Holy Hours and Mass.

I'm Hispanic too and single, 26 years old one of the things I blame myself for when I think about this is having not been interested in high school and only until it was in college to date. And did that contributing to the singleness and it's absolutely very not true. I am holding out hope that if the Lord Wills I will be in a relationship but also I have learned and am learning still a journey and a process that if I am going to be single then it's okay because the lord always has my back and I don't have to worry about being lonely for the rest of my life or anything like that. My cousins are all around my age so that definitely doesn't help with the Hispanic family culture

Love this video. I feel like another thing to add is this: don't feel pressured to date someone just because they are Catholic or are a very devout Catholic. I feel like a lot of people feel like if they are asked out by another Catholic, that they have to say yes or that "this is it" because they are both Catholic. But there are a lot of other things that go into a relationship. Shared faith is excellent, but there are a lot of other things. I feel like there could potentially be a lot of lukewarm marriages because people felt like being Catholic was the only thing that they should look for and the only thing that mattered.

Yes! I fell into the same trap at one point. Was dating a Catholic man for a very long time, we had very little in common but I would often tell myself he was Catholic, his family was Catholic, they were very devout. It was part of the reason why I stayed with him for so long (for over a year) even though looking back he definitely wasn't the right guy for me. It's hard because we are surrounded by people who don't share our faith, and finding a Catholic man who actually wants a relationship with you is hard.

Marriage needs to be something entered into completely freely in order to be valid as well. So marrying someone because of pressure to get married, either pressure from society at large or from other Catholics, could be grounds for annulment later on.

Remember that St. Paul writesin I Cor. 7 " An unmarried woman or virgin is concerned about the Lord’s affairs: Her aim is to be devoted to the Lord in both body and spirit." You don't have to be a nun in a convent. You can live a devoted single life in the world with a career, a ministry, etc. and let God figure out whether He has someone for you. I am still single at 66 years old, and VERY HAPPY since I have had the most blessed life, and thank God for his goodness.

I'm sixteen and in highschool, so there's a lot of relationships going on around me. That kind of environment can really put a teen under pressure, and, although this video hits home for older folks, I think it's a great reminder for people of my age too. We can be both happy and single. It's okay to put ourselves out there and try to find our future spouse, but we must also remember that our lives have meaning right where we are now. It can be lonely sometimes not being in a relationship, but know that God is the greatest companion you could ever have, and He has an incredible future in store for you. Don't get so stressed about being single that you lose sight of the incredible present moment He's given you as well, guys. Sending a big hug to all 🫂

Incredible, your sixteen. You sound very smart, you have a bright future. Your story reminded me of myself in highschool, it was a nightmare dodging easy sex to stay devout. I'm not going to lie if your not really pursuing dating, or considering that maybe you can help a girl find her way back to the one true church, your in for a hard road. I'm 35 now, still no bueno. I too have almost 20 nieces and nephews like this woman in the video, I don't think I'm better than anyone, faith is a gift, and being devout takes work, I had 15 years of construction under my belt by the age of 32, just finished writing a book, and if it ever gets really hard consider writing one too. Or something else, it helps you reconnect with the holy spirit. Reality is hard, these girls don't walk with signs that say they are Catholic. I'm an usher at my church and no one really talks to you. I don't believe in dating sites. I think of myself as traditional. All I'm saying is it's ok to be a friend with girls if they ain't the right one, and if you do want a relationship maybe don't do what I did and wait, or think being a nice guy will get noticed. I only get noticed for my truck etc... And that doesn't do it for me, I like good morals. Might have to think outside the box. But don't ever let a woman tell you when your a man, not even your mom. Or your dad. I was the right hand man number one guy for three different companies, two of my bosses were veterans, all were my friends. And I don't talk to them anymore. Never give up on God. Most people find their way to God through their kids or an experience, while I have had experiences as well, a man's 20's are the hardest and can be the loneliest, I found my way to God really as an adult man through Jesus. He truly is man incarnate. A real person. God Hero. My savior. King of Kings. I would give my life for him, and hopefully someone else if I had too. There is always improvements when we take on our duty. I use to feel stupid all the time, so I quit smoking pot 4 years ago, still no wife. I think sometimes I'm too damaged. But I feel so loyal and honest. I want to be alone but I know that's not necessarily the best thing for me. I considered priesthood but my heart still has hope for a family. Prayer is real and it helps me, but falling into desolation is a trap. Helping others is really the only thing that makes you feel good if it gets so bad. Take my wisdom please. God bless. Your brother in Christ.
@lovemovedfirst7710
@lovemovedfirst7710 Жыл бұрын
@@robertmontoya8915 Thank you for your kind words and for taking the time to write this advice. It means a lot that you'd share with me your own faith journey. Congratulations on quitting smoking by the way! I pray to God that you'll continue to keep that up and stay strong despite temptations. And I can't imagine the things you've been through. Life is full of beautiful, amazing moments, but it has it's fair deal of hardships too. However, as tough as they may be, they really can draw us closer to Christ. Mother Teresa once said that all the pain she's been through has led her right to Jesus on the cross and that allowed her to be close enough to our Lord that He could bend down and kiss her head. So the struggles we face, if given to Christ, have a purpose. We can grow and learn from each experience we have, knowing that God is greater than any mistake or failure or sin. I sometimes think I'm too far gone as well. But that couldn't be further from the truth. We're all works in progress, and God would never give up on us. In fact, we're the ones who often give up on Him. So may we pray for the strength to persevere, the humility to go to Him in all things, and the love to let Him lead us wherever He wants. It's nice to know I'm not alone in relationship struggles, and I pray that you'll continue to cling to the Catholic faith. I pray that one day you'll be able to start the family you hope for with the right person. I like Ephesians 3:20 (at least I think it's 3:20 😅) a lot, because it's a solid reminder that whatever we hope for, God promises to give us something even better and beyond our imagination. Thank your for your encouragement once more! And if you need anything, whether it be a prayer or a virtual hug, don't be afraid to reach out. ~Your sister and fellow "saint in training" in Jesus Christ 😊

I'm 31 and still single. I don't feel as much pressure being male, but even though I am not confronted with it directly I still feel the assumption that I am a defect just attending Mass and seeing all the couples younger than me. So I identify with all the feelings conveyed in the video. It's a challenge. Growing up being overweight and as the stereotypical nerd doesn't help either. It can kinda reinforce those assumptions about being unworthy. But being single, I have been able to spend more time with my family, and see my younger siblings grow. I have been able to gain mastery in my career as a Software Dev and have become a subject matter expert at my job. And I've been able to focus on going to confession every week, as I need it. I still have a lot of faults but maybe my vocation right now being single is to address these faults.

@drbirdleaf2574
@drbirdleaf2574 4 ай бұрын
@@Baraodojaguarysome of us want to do Gods will but still having trouble accepting that will be singleness. So in effect we want to be single, but still can’t be satisfied with it until we’re able to grow our faith enough to trust Him fully. We don’t all grow into it instantly. Rather we dwell in loneliness praying for a way out of it without being able to understand that the only solution for loneliness is through Christ. Along the way we get to offer Him our suffering as we learn the difference between self centered love and authentic love, we get to learn how to break our patterns of lust, sloth, gluttony, addictions and other defects we have as coping mechanisms for loneliness that easily devolves into depression, low self esteem and self worth. Loneliness creates a host of issues that make us poor choices as spouses and can only be resolved with relief from the suffering of loneliness and that can only be done through Christ but my selfishness says that I want to be relived of the pain now while in reality the pain won’t subside until I’m able to fully accept my state in life. In reality, the pain of singleness, while it certainly does hurt and has days I can’t even get out of bed if I decide to live in my thoughts, when I push through it to be of use to others and strive for Gods will for them above my own I’m no longer in my head and I’m practicing loving Christ in others. When I find myself lusting over someone I immediately pray that God finds them a suitable partner that is right for them and ask that He finds me a suitable partner for myself and for the discernment to recognize it. This way rather than obsessing over someone for the wrong reasons and desiring that which is not mine, I’m able to love her authenticity rather than selfishly with lust and avoid the guilt of lust as well as the heart stabbing pain of rejection while feeling good about being able to love her the way I’m supposed to, by genuinely wanting what’s best for her and not trying to make her conform to my will. I still haven’t accepted singleness and I still suffer the pain daily but it has been somewhat lessened as I offer my suffering as part of the cross that I must bare. If I were to live a consecrated life, I might lose that suffering as I wouldn’t be able to hold on to hope that the suffering could end. Not knowing exactly what I’m called to do adds to the suffering and loneliness in some ways. Besides just the loneliness, I’m finding a lot of fears buried within it too. Things like what am I going to do when I’m old and alone, how will I live, what if I get sick and have no one to care for me, and a ton of other things. Another fear is that I’ll remain single until all of my fears are dealt with. So in this way I’m unfit for a consecrated life and only fit for singleness. These are some reasons why I remain single without a commitment to singleness. It’s helping me to grow closer to God and be grateful that my pain isn’t worse than it is because it hurts every day. I may not know the fullness of how He plans to use my suffering, but I am occasionally given a glimpse of how it’s used daily to increase my ability to live more closely aligned with His will than the previous day

I just learned the last point practically in my career route. I struggled for like 7 years to find stable employment and I have a postgrad in finance. This along with being single forever almost destroyed me. I felt invisible to the world and to God. I started to live like nothing would 'work out' until I started to step into a deeper (even though wobbly) faith. Understanding that I am made by God, for God and INHERENTLY I was enough. I got a job in a company that is the most valuable brand in my country, per top research ratings. My supervisors do not treat me like trash the way I got treated at my previous unfruitful jobs. They are happy to have me and they're thankful that I chose them. I keep wondering where they've been all these years as I was crying. The job I am in has put me in a beautiful place where I am taken care of. No other employer could do the bare minimum. My point is, through the years of hopelessness and redefining my life and growing in faith, it has been quite painful but I wouldn't change it for anything because I walk in this new town with the Lord. I can't do anything without Him.

I'm especially guilty of thinking I'm too picky, but I've only recently come to understand that religion is not something I'm ready to compromise. I need a husband who wants to pray the Rosary with me. So, I think I'll stop being a walking example of these myths and begin living a good single life as a Catholic. Thank you, I needed to hear this. My boyfriend of almost 3yrs and I broke up this past week. He and I have been struggling for a while now and I blamed myself a lot for putting so much pressure on us both to get married. He is three years younger than me, not Catholic and definitely not ready yet, but after months of novenas, fasting, and convos with my parish priest I decided our paths are going in different directions and that's okay. Navigating single life as a catholic in a small town at age 32 is not going to be easy, but thank you for sharing this. The Holy Spirit brought me to KZfaq for a reason today. lol blessings.

Single Catholics are dying, and we need more videos like this. I sometimes feel like I'm cholking or my heart has a mini panic attack when I hear about my gal friends getting married. I think, "why God?? Why do they get the happiness that I've wanted since I was a little girl, that I yearn for so much?"........... hearing this video put my mind at ease.

I come from a community without dating culture, was never allowed to date until I was in my twenties, and the catholic culture here seems lukewarm to me (I maybe wrong, but contraceptives, porn, fewer confessions etc are being looked at as something normal by the youth, and only the older generation seems to be devout) . I'm also psychologically vastly different from people within my community (and most communities) because of my uncommon upbringing. Sorry for the long rant and all this TMI.

Finally some discussion around this topic! Catholic, single, and 28 here. It can definitely be hard when I let my mind go down the rabbit hole and think “I’ll never meet the right person” or “I’ll be too old to have kids by the time I do.” It can sometimes be painful for me to see a young married couple or young family at mass. I know that sounds horrible but it’s true, I’m happy for them but it’s a constant reminder of what I long for and don’t have. I’m happy to see this video and all the comments of others and their stories. I know I need to have more faith in this area of my life!

Thank you a lot for sharing your experience! This hits deep. I'm of similar age, single catholic man and I feel I also experienced all these... 'myths'. They are nested deeply in me, so I can't confidently say I don't believe in them, I'm not convinced and I still feel that I'm considered defective, not worth enough or a failure. However it helps a lot to hear that there are other - normal and beautiful like you - people who have similar experience. I often think that it's not the fact of being single that hurts, it's the misunderstanding and mocking from people, who should be supportive. Thank you and I wish you all the best! I'm eagerly looking forward to more videos from you! And yeah, I strongly believe it's better to be single than with a wrong person. I hope not to forget that because of people pressure.

Thank you for being vulnerable and sharing. It's difficult being the only single person in your group of friends. If you are not worrying about perpetual singleness, you are worrying about what marriage life will bring as you watch your friends' marriages crumble. I also went through a stage where I was trying too hard and I think that is natural. When this urge comes on now, I pray about it and remind myself to trust (Matt 7: 11)

Great video, as there are more singles now in the Catholic faith than there have probably ever been, this is an important topic that I would love to see discussed and shared about more! I am 30 and single and I related to each part of this. Reading and listening to podcasts has helped me through some of these difficult things, and it's important not to feel alone! It's good to know that there are other Catholic singles out there to relate to as we go through these stages of life. I especially think that singles need to understand that being single is not a sign of "being defective" because it might cause someone to be so desperate to marry that they make rash decisions, as Lillian was explaining. Marriage can make or break a person, so yes, be picky!

Thank you, thank you, and thank you. For the longest time I literally thought something was wrong with me and I was destined to die alone lol. I never considered my marital status is strongly influenced by God; and that right now he has purpose in mind for my gifts, and that by using them with fullness in my heart, I can glorify my Lord with a happy and joyful heart, and eventually become who I was meant to be. I am now working on using my gifts for my Parish and my community and I have never been happier. Call me crazy but I’ve always thought I heard a little voice in my head repeating, “Never settle.” I pray that God will guide you into the fruitful blossom that you were meant to be, and one day you will find a man who completes you, and will aid you as you seek a deeper relationship with God. I will keep praying for you and God bless.

This is good advice for younger single people, but there's another dimension. The Church talks a good game when they say that the single vocation (outside of marriage, holy orders, etc.) is just as sacred as marriage, but then when you hit about 35, the parishes and Catholic organizations demographically exclude you from most events. You can't go to events for "single Catholics 18 to 34 years old", you can't go to events "for dads", you can't go to events for "married couples", or to almost any other event they organize, because you fall outside the parameters. They'll accept your volunteer efforts until they work you to death, but you're basically excluded from all social or spiritual events other than mass. (Not that the mass is chopped liver or anything.)
@larrymelman
@larrymelman Жыл бұрын
The "single vocation" is due to the Church being unwilling to admit that parishes have become cold, unsociable places with no social basis at all. Fallout from the clergy scandals is one reason - parish council just wouldn't dream of putting on a social without putting everyone through the "safe environment" indoctrination first. What few social cliques that exist, totally exclude working-age single adults. The Catholic marriage rate is all but zero but no one cares, no one dares to ask why.

I agree. I am 60. A great gal but single, never married. I feel like my church is for couples only. I still attend and try to be active but feel rather lonely at times. Thank goodness God has blessed me in other ways. I could not do this without HIM. For HIM I am thankful. Why is the church like this? Why am I still single when others of all shapes, sizes, pretty/thin/heavy/old/young find someone? I have no answers. But I am blessed to have God in my life.

Lady. Thank-you. When you spoke about embarrassment, that cut to the heart for me. Thank-you for addressing our experience head-on, without just brushing by the hard parts with pep. (It can feel like we always have to put on the peppy face and not acknowledge the reality of what being single can feel like, because that just becomes an awkward conversation for everyone.) For whatever it's worth, after you acknowledged embarrassment as part of the single experience, my heart relaxed enough to remember: 'Jesus was a single man.' And that's a helpful thought for me. Many people do get called to the earthly icon of the heavenly wedding feast -- to earthly marriage -- before they die. And that's beautiful. But many people don't get called to marriage before they die. And that's not "failing" or being "unworthy". Jesus failed in nothing and was unworthy of nothing, and we *know* he lived out the Father's call for his life _exactly._ And... that didn't involve an (earthly) marriage. That involved life as a single, then death by torture on the cross. I really do have to remind myself of that sort of thing though. Because marriage is just so beautiful, and the human heart so longs for it (so naturally, since it points us toward God by analogy)... it can really feel sometimes like we're the less loved ones, or the less worthy ones, because we're not married. But God knows our experience intimately. And he himself shared our experience when he walked on this earth. Looking forward to your next video, Lillian! I'm interested to hear what else you have to say.

I don't understand the problem of being single. I'm 60, never dated, never been interested in marriage and kids and God let me get on with my life without throwing in the impediment of marriage and family. I was able to look after both my parents until they died which I wouldn't have been able to do if I'd had my own family. Life has been hard sometimes, particularly financially, but God has given me everything I have ever needed. I know lots of people like me. This constant dating anxiety ("you're nothing without a partner") seems to be a hallmark of North American society and is psychologically very unhealthy.

I thought being single would be challenging enough but being a single catholic is even more challenging since I don't fit into the three traditional vocations: priesthood, religious life, or marriage. I am almost 41 years old and still really don't know what I am doing. I definitely feel like I am just floating around in circles. I never felt like I belonged anywhere in the secular world but even as a practicing catholic striving toward heaven, I feel really out of place in the catholic church because most people my age are either married, in religious life, or in the priesthood. I don't get too down about it because since I was a small child, I always felt like a puzzle piece that never quite fit anywhere. I just pray I learn to get used to being the misfit that I am.
