Signal Chain: Bass - Hotone Britwind Amp (green channel) - DI out - Sonicake Sonic IR (8x10 bass cab IR) - Interface...
I recently read about BEAD tuning on a 4-string bass. I had never realized it was a thing before. It should be obvious I suppose... I tried it out today. These strings are Fender flat-wounds - gauge 45 to 100. They are higher tension than round wounds of the same gauge, so they feel ok tuned down. The low string is a little floppy going from E to B, but it is playable and stays in tune...
Now I think I'll go flat-wound, standard tuning on my mini P-bass and get some heavier round wounds for this J-bass and keep it in BEAD tuning. Maybe better to get a 5-string set and use the 2nd to 5th strings... How do you like BEAD tuning?

I personally love that BEAD tuning on that 4 string bass guitar.

I'm strictly a 5-string player, five of them, but still have my old 4-string P bass that just hangs on the wall. I'm older now, hands not working so well, thinking about putting it on my work table and stringing it BEAD. I've already been experimenting with songs I play on a fiver, just neglecting the G string for the very-few songs I use it, and it's simple to just slide up the neck for those notes. In fact, after I type this I think I'm gonna go to work on that. :D

After I posted this, I did in-fact sting my four-banger BEAD, and I love it. :)

Yeah I'm not a real bass player, so a 4-string neck is big enough for me already. BEAD just makes things easier for me. I like it.

I did the exactly same with my 45-100 and Squier Mike Dirnt, it just plays like heaven, just like a acoustic bass with woody tone and low tension.

Nice. Just a couple of days ago I put the 4 fat strings from a 5-string set on this bass (roundwounds). I haven't played it much yet, but so far it's pretty good.

@@RobCmusic my latest plan is to buy a 032 gauge flatwound string as my new g string and stop using 100 as the low B string😂

Dang, that sounds really good. I've been thinking of putting flats or groundwounds on my Epiphone EB3. Every time I hear flats, I'm a little more sold, but the BEADs are so tasty. I'm gonna have to do it!

Yeah it's fun. I go between standard tuning and BEAD with this bass. It saves me having to get a 5-string for occasional use!

Thanks - new on here and this came up because I was looking for alternate tunings. Coming from classical acoustic and ear to 4 string bass for some reason the G on the 4th string tweaks my ear and I’m adjusting it often. Think I’ll try this bead and see if my ears are happier- playing by ear only they have to be happy. Thanks

Very cool, pretty funky for a white guy...hahahaha...I did notice that most of your pluckin' was on the E, A and D strings, hitting the B very rarely. Is that just this tune, do you have a video of pluckin' that B more? I am a newbie just picked a bass up a couple months ago, I am a retired professional drummer from L.A. 40+ years, and after over 20 surgeries, mostly on both feet and lower back, my drums are harder and harder to play. I have always dug the bass, hear every bass line no matter the genre and I am diggin' learning how to play it, funky and sexy...hahaha...

Depending on your taste and use B would have been the 5th string on a 5 string bass with EADG. I enjoy having the additional string for certain scenarios like fretting where normally an open string would be used so I can mute more effectively. Sounds good. I love flats!

This bass currently has the bottom 4 strings of a roundwound 5-string set instead of these flats. I kept the flats in case I decide to switch back in the future, which I may well do. I always change my mind about things.

Wtf I have 3 choices for BEAD My lovely jazzbass partcaster (in the build currently) My luuuuvely american original gold p bass (sooo classic with fat C neck) My cheap cort action A bass (fun and not bad) For the Jazz, I feel like it is sooo hood for high soloing but sonce it has a good midscoop and it brings out more clarity I feel like it would fit a low b since its bot muddy and you can hear the overtones of the note For the P, I feel like i dont wanna bc best bass and so classic But since the fat C makes you play slower and more groovy I feel like a B string would fit and simce the bass sounds very fat, the B could make a bombastic fundament but it is also muddy For the cort - I feel like I have nothing to loose and i could try it out there without having to fiddle and adjust one of the expensive basses. And I feel like it would fit bc mostly I would use standard tuning (at least its like that for my standard strat vs my barotone PRS which I use less)
