A few tips on fuel lines: Got to a small engine repair shop or lawnmower repair shop and purchase it there. Also, any professional who works on these fuel lines will also use a pair of needle-nosed pliers to spread the tip of the fuel line with prior to trying to push it onto the fitting of a carb or a gas tank. Believe me, I learned this trick the hard way when I used to change out the fuel lines to my carb for my Ural sidecar rig. It works pretty good, too. That crappy fuel line you removed is generally destroyed by the gasoline with ethanol mixture run in these motors and sold at the pumps these days. I, for grins and giggles, i am also going to look at modifying this setup to run on propane instead of gasoline. I can always swap it back easily if I wish. I have everything for such a mod, so it will be interesting to piddle around with such. It is nice that these friction motors are four stroke engines which means less smoke and noise. I may put a standard motor onto my Del Russo and swing for a Cranbrook for this particular build.

I got the same upgraded fuel line from a local hardware and farm supply store for like 30 cents/foot, they have it bulk on large spools and they measure and cut it for you, definitely worth getting, I also use Sta-Bil fuel stabilizer for my 2 stroke, the ethanol in most gasoline eats up the cheap fuel lines.

@@dehoedisc7247 it's not automotive fuel hose, it's PVC or something, but it's higher quality than what comes with these kits by any means. It's from a local farm/house/garden/hardware/etc store. It's not prepackaged. They have large spools in bulk and you tell the employee how much to cut and they write up a ticket, so it's very cheap per foot. You can likewise buy lengths of rope or chain at way cheaper prices than prepackaged. But regarding the PVC hose and my gas bike, I use about 0.4oz of Sta-Bil per gallon of gas (and oil), the hose has held up very well.

Yeah I also built a chain driven 4-stroke with the same engine and it was way more complicated. The friction drive is way easier and simple. The bike actually accelerated faster but top speed was not as fast as chain drive, but not by much. Maybe 20-25mph. I actually preferred being able to accelerate faster with less top speed I won't use.

hey great vid ! I was wondering do you always feel like you're pulled to the left, since the engine is not centered, I imagine that it influences the balance when you are riding. Also, is the friction drive reliable if you ride in rain or in muddy conditions, does it still grip well on the rear wheel, cause some people said that you can't ride in rain with this.
@Argedis
@Argedis 3 жыл бұрын
I thought the same thing but surprisingly the engine on the side does not affect your balance at all. The only time you notice the weight there is when you get off the bike and use the kickstand. For the second question you CANNOT use this in rain, or even run over a puddle. As soon as the tire gets wet it will slip like crazy. The tire has to be completely dry for it to work.

Sorry but I have to chime in. The orange fuel line supplied with the kit, although ill fitting, is a fuel line. Meaning that it is treated so that it won't break down when in constant contact with petroleum. Remember, plastics and vinyl hoses are made with petroleum byproducts. So, the clear vinyl hose might fit better but it won't, normally, last as long and will have a tendency to 'weld' itself to fittings and/or dry out and crack. The orange hose, will resist these things.

I used this fuel line on a moped a lighter works very well once its slightly sticky push it on the fuel tap and it will form a seal or gasket around the petcock to the carb only way that will come off is with a box cutter did use a few hose clamps way over kill that line you could tug on it over and over full strength its not going anywhere which doubles as well if you put a hose clamp on dash pf added security is always good

Yeah that only works on a 2 stroke engine with a diaphragm type fuel system...a 4 stroke like this is gravity fed. That's why a weed eater will run no matter how you position it but they are also a lot of hassle, simpler is more reliable IMO!
@whitechrist2965
@whitechrist2965 2 жыл бұрын
To clarify there are small 4 stroke engines that do use a pumper carb like is common on a 2 stroke, I believe Bikeberry sells some, but the engine in this is not one of those. It is possible however to rig up a fuel pump of some sort, be it vacuum or electric, but using anything other than gravity feed WILL give you problems eventually.

With the motor mounted to one side like that, is there any issues with weight distribution as you ride the bike? I have a friction-drive motor setup ordered, but it will be centered over the rear wheel. Unfortunately, I am not so sure it will work okay on the bike I originally bought. That is a Del Russo, by Huffy, and it has a bike rack on back which I am going to have to look at removal. I am anxious to get the motor and start the build though, as you are correct about the ease of installation to these kits. Thanks for posting the video.
@Argedis
@Argedis 4 жыл бұрын
No issues at all, when you're actually riding the bike you do not feel the weight difference. Your own body weight completely negates the 'imbalance' The only time it's an issue is when you're trying to 'park' it. Since it has the motor on one side it can tip over a lot easier if not careful. On my bike the original kick stand works but an aftermarket one would work much better.

And some of the modern cheap transparent hose is pretty but leaky.)

Well, at age 71, I have spent most of my life in owning and driving daily everything from Cushman eagles to Model A Fords and years on my Ural sidecar rig. Fuel lines have been used in various configurations, just as you said, but many are simply pure junk, due to variations of fuel mixtures required by the government. Some are worse than junk and I am particularly thinking about some of those orange ones as shown in this video. Discussing such is not a problem, as it is simply sharing good information to the public at large. I recently bought some fuel line at a local auto parts store which cost me about $25 bucks with tax and all, for maybe 6 feet of the stuff. The clear plastic stuff shown in this video makes me think of the plastic tubing sold at Ace Hardware for refrigerators and appliances. I am suspicious that it is not truly rated as actual fuel line, but one never knows with what is sold on Ebay or Amazon these days. Me, I would head to a local small engine repair shop and feel a bit better about what I got there, but again, one never knows and if this stuff is legit as they describe, then the cost on Amazon is not outrageous to begin with. In short, I pretty much disagree with your initial reply and am grateful that he posted the info for all to view in regards to fuel line use, myself.

If you still have this you should put a 2 stroke speed carburetor and it gives it a little more boost to it

Mine is still going strong, the only thing that will wear out faster will be your rear tire.

@@Argedis How fast do the tires go out?
@Argedis
@Argedis 5 жыл бұрын
@@malikfrank4041 Mine have been wearing out fairly fast but I think I had too much pressure on it at the beginning and was wearing it out faster than it needed too. You have to apply just the right amount of pressure and not overdo it.

Motor vehicles have survived for over 100 years without the use of Clear Fuel Hose. No need to make such a big deal out of it now.

You don't need it but it is nice to have it can help with troubleshooting to see the fuel flow while the engine is running

@dehoedisc7247 4 жыл бұрын
@@whitechrist8700 the very fact that the engine is running Tells you that fuel is flowing. The VW and other cars used a very strong reinforced fuel hose since 1938, and there was no question about the fuel flowing without being able to see it. I use the same old-style VW fuel hose and it never fails.

The engine might run but might not run right. I had a scooter like that. It would start and idle fine but wouldn't rev up to speed. It wasn't until I put clear fuel line on that I was able to see the new fuel filter I put on it was not passing enough fuel. I may have otherwise spent a lot of time trying to figure out what the issue was.
