4 translation skills all translators need, but most bilinguals lack!

When you look at these 4 essential translation skills, you’ll understand why most bilinguals don’t make great translators.
To start with, you may be surprised to know that many people who speak another language, and perhaps most, fall well short of the required language skills needed for professional translation.
Then there are the required personality traits - if you’re a speed over substance person, forget it!
And how many of us are actually damn fine writers? Yes, that’s another of the key skills everyone needs to be a decent translator. After all translators need to produce well-worded texts people will enjoy reading - across all sorts of styles. Like marketing spiel, legalise, technical materials, even colloquial language at times. How many of us have the skills to do that!
On top of this, translating any chunk of text involves pretty complex mental processing. Which means if you don’t follow a thorough translation process, your translations are unlikely to consistently be up to scratch.
Which makes our last required skill (well it isn’t really a “skill”, but I know you’ll forgive us) make total sense.
These aren’t the only skills needed for quality translation, but we think they’re the key ones. Certainly they’ll pretty quickly sort out which bilinguals have what it takes, and which ones don’t.
Make sure you head over to our blog article for a slightly different take on this: www.pactranz.com/blog/the-tran...
And while you’re there check out our other useful articles and guides.

I have a side gig of translating on Fiverr. I have a 5.0 rating so far with the handful of work I've done. I deliver as professionally as I can, but I too use Google translate to help me in some areas as I am fluent in the languages enough to know where Google translate fails. Don't get discouraged. Give it a try !

While this video is highly accurate at some level, it should not discourage anyone from getting into the translation business. I have seen a lot of trained professionals and products coming from fancy agencies that simply do not cut it.

I speak Spanish, I'm learning English. I have no college degree and I'm currently 32. It's going to be difficult, no-one has ever said it is going to be a piece of cake, there's no job that is easy, even if you see people enjoying it. This man described skills that can be learned, just find resources and study and practice and you will reach your goal. I believe I can do it. I believe you can do it too

The truth is that a good translator needs many skills. He must have an EXCELLENT and complete knowledge of the language , that he /she/ must be intelligent, to think fast, to react quickly and handle in the situation, to have a broad general knowledge, good memory and patience. Additionally, he must be courageous and ready to stand in front of different speakers, to have good hearing and concentration.

I wasn't really expecting this content, as a fully bilingual French-English person I find translation difficult simply because I am fully anchored into both languages and don't use a translation process to communicate, I'm not used to finding the equivalent of a word in the other language since I just use the phrasing and words that I need without even thinking about it. That's what makes me a fairly mediocre translator. All that you talk about in your video is valid for anyone and has nothing to do with bilingual people in particular. Also I don't find it constructive in the slightest to say "never". Hard work and determination can lead to success no matter what your fundamental personality type. I thought this was going to be a really interesting video about how the bilingual brain works. It's actually a pretty negative message throughout and I imagine highly discouraging for anyone who aspires to be a translator. Maybe you could take a different angle and say:here's what you need to work on to become a brilliant translator.

I'm not sure what your background was like, but I've heard that people who grow up speaking two languages have the same kinds of difficulties translating that you're describing. On the plus side, if you learned Spanish you could probably translate well to both French and English! And since you seem to have an intuitive understanding of both languages, you might find Spanish easier to learn than other French or English speakers would, since Spanish has a good number of similarities to both. :)

Absolutely correct! The old Greek saying like any philosopher's bald but not anyone who's bald is a philosopher does not seem to apply in this case! Just because if there are non-bilinguals who become highly trained interpreters, why should bilinguals necessarily fail to! This is just a question of personal motivation. Moreover, a bilingual is already half an interpreter! It'll take him/her way less time to get trained into a good professional interpreter or translator. So, guys, bilinguals, keep it up! You are the lucky ones, because you were born "with a fortune on you bank account", if you understand what I mean 🥸✌

I have worked as a translator for 14 years now. I do not have a degree, but I have all these four skills. My personality type is ISTJ, which makes it easy to pay attention to detail and deliver a high-quality service. However, I see other translators thrive with very poor skills! For example, a friend, who has a degree, worked for a USD 20,000.00 contract with a client, and her work is not good by any stretch of the imagination. This client seems to be happy contracting someone with a degree but who delivers a low-quality service, and would be very unhappy with someone who does not have a degree, no matter the quality. This is frustrating! I spend more time on every job, reviewing it twice, and thus earning less than other translators who do not pay any attention to detail. Anyway, it is literally impossible for me to deliver a document without striving for perfection. I liked your video very much, Sir! I subcontract other translators, and most do not have these skills, which is why I spend a long time trying to find the perfect match for each language.

Yes, some people definitely have the skills and are excellent translators without having studied translation. I think of them as naturals, and if that’s you AFighter, great. A degree course teaches good methodologies and gives students heaps of practice and feedback, so they learn and improve. Most people need this. And it should also separate the wheat from the chaff - identify those that just don’t quite have it. I also agree there are working translators with poor skills who seem to do well. Two comments on that. The translation market is vast, and for some uses an OK but not high-quality translation will be perfectly fine. Secondly, clients often aren’t aware of the quality of the translations they get. They just assume they’re fine. But eventually they tend to find out. Translators often struggle to keep clients longer term when they don’t quite have the skills needed. I don’t know where you live AFighter, but have you considered getting a qualification from an “industry” body - eg IoL, ATA, NAATI? You can get these by sitting an exam, they’re at a high standard, and should help sway the sort of client you mention. A bit costly, but might be worth the investment.

I'm watching this because I just finished the English subtitles for a German movie (our own, so I'm not doing it 'professionally') and was looking for tips for reviewing my subtitles. Apparently I'm a sparkly unicorn :) but in all seriousness: I translated a contract we (German) were working on with an American guy, so everyone would know what's going on. After all the legal jazz, I gave both my English draft and the German contract to a translator. A week later it came back with two sentences changed and it still had some mistakes that I had originally made. That was pretty appalling considering the university spent money on it. I think a lot of the skill in knowing a language comes from learning the flow of the words. Sometimes, words just feel right or wrong. However, I could never ever be a simultaneous interpreter. I can either speak German or English and when translating, I take my time and I can't stand to have anything German around when translating to English. I'm the classic "can say something in german?" "uuuuh I forgot my native language!" :) Also: go kiwis 😊

French is my native tongue, but since I've been speaking and working in English for half my life, I'd say my English is pretty much immaculate, I actually hold a TESL certificate and taught at Berlitz Japan for years. I'm 51, do I still have time to start a career as a professional translator? I'm a web dev/designer, so could specialize in IT/Tech fields.

Esta ok, fluency is just a fake concept. try "comfort" instead, as it helps. Do you feel comfortable going to places that only speak Spanish, and do you feel comfortale in your Spanis_

Very good but I take exception to your statement, that translators ONLY work into their own native language. True for many translation requirements, but by no means all. For example, say that a police department has hours of audio surveillance on a suspected drug dealer. Most of it was recorded in his native language (Spanish, Russian, Chinese, ...) The best translator might be a native of one of those countries, not an English speaker who didn't grow up in the same environment, knowing the same culture, slang, etc.

Thanks for the comment marzolian, and you're right of course, with a very sound example. I agree I was too dogmatic there and there are exceptions to every "rule".

I am the best English-Chinese translator in Taipei, Taiwan, Rep. of China. I am 74 years now. Education and experience made me a good translator. If I am not the best, show me the best and I will invite you for a luxurious dinner. Every time when I told my friends and colleagues, they all laugh and made no argument with me. I am specialized in legal, financial, civil engineering documents and contract. Some contracts are bad contracts. There are words even sentences omitted, wrongly spelled and copied from other contracts. Nobody knows, except me, because I have translated thousands of pieces of contracts. If you can prove anything is wrong in my translation, you are my King (Queen), I will do anything you ordered. Such as beat anybody you don’t like (I am a pitdog. I like fighting)or wash your toilet free of charge for a month.

They also tend to think you're an expert on every subject. In other words they think that, not only being bilingual means you can translate any subject matter without any training in that specific field (medicine/law etc.) but that you can do it effortlessly as well.

I speak 5 languages, 3 of which I grew up speaking daily: Portuguese, English and Spanish. The other two I've learned in the countries I moved to. I must agree with you on some points for the benefit of the doubt, but there are some which I refuse, simply because there is not enough evidence to back them up plus, the human factor and the ability to learn and master determined subjects could and will defy any system of learning approach. I do understand that the use of a well-formulated text with fancy words which, for the most part, intentionally will be used to lure the end receiver into purchasing some products, a tactic used by advertisers with a pinch of a psychological approach is well-known. I must also agree with some of the comments that your video is rather discouraging to some extent. Overall I think it harms those who would dare to build a career as a translator.

Hmmm I think he is wrong, anyone who is highly fluent and can write well is able to translate texts, for accuracies sake what is more important is knowledge about the conventions in the area of specialisation pertaining to the text.
