I've have just done a procedure last April when the dr plaid a seton. the fistula is draining and pains as well I'm trying my best to come off of the pain killers because I've been on it for about 4 months. my question is how long will this drainage go on for. To be honest Doc I was following you since this time and you have brought me great comfort to the point I tell a hold lot of people about you. Thank you for your kind open words of encouragement.

I think one important thing to say is always listen to your surgeon. I had a mesh inserted two times to help heal my anal fistula and the surgeon had me on a high fiber diet. For my other surgeries he wanted me a on a low fiber diet so my bowels were softer. Using gauze and changing it frequently was also super important. I wish this video was made sooner when I went through my surgeries. It was so difficult to find any information on what to expect. Online articles said I should recover within a week which was so incorrect. After each surgery it took 3-4 weeks to be able to sit in a chair comfortably or walk slowly around my neighborhood.

Thank you for creating this channel Dr. Chung, it's been extremely helpful. What's the risk of permanent incontinence to liquid stool and gas with a traditional hemorrhoidectomy? Some surgeons say there is almost no risk and any incontinence is usually limited to 30 days post-surgery while other state permanent/life-long incontinence can occur. What's your perspective on this?

Thanks much for putting these excellent videos on youtube. Super good info. I had Hemorrhoid surgery about 5 weeks ago.. I still have a huge amount of pain when doing number 2.. This pain was very bad at the first week and has not improved much (if any) at week 5. During the day, the Bhole is still a bit moist and a small amount of pus if I put toilet paper back there. I had a follow up with my doctor at two weeks after surgery and let him know - he seemed to think everything was normal at two weeks. I may have to call him and let him know my current condition.. @@hopes1569 I had my surgery April 28th. I have no pain. I don't know how the incision is healing. Hopefully I will be one of the lucky 50 percent that don't get a fistula. The surgeon ordered a CT scan to see if there is anymore abscess. I doubt I have anything since I have no pain or fever. What were you worried about?

@@hopes1569 Doctor Chung mentioned pus was natural secretion that he wanted to see (if I remember right). I was also worried I was seeing pus on my gauze. When do you see your doctor again to see how you're healing? Did he give you antibiotics or instructions on how to clean it properly? God bless you.

@@hopes1569 My surgery was an anal abscess. I would think it's different than hemoroids. I'm supposed to have to pain disappear when they drain the pus pocket. Hemoroids seems to do with the veins; I would message your doctor. Some doctors don't seem like they care though.

Would love some commentary from someone in a similar situation as me. I had perianal abscess drained in early July. Fistulotomy in late September. I'm currently 12+ weeks post-fistulotomy. Blood and pus drainage subsided within 2-3 weeks of surgery. And I haven't had an abscess since prior to surgery. Unfortunately, I'm dealing with overnight drainage of some kind of liquid, whether it's sweat or clear mucus I'm not sure. I definitely get "swamp ass" easier now too. No pain or discomfort or anything really, but the drainage. I had my 12 week follow-up with surgeon, and he said the fistula "looked completely healed" to him. When I expressed my concern over the lingering drainage, I didn't get one of two answers I was hoping for (1- "That's completely normal, and some people just take longer to completely heal than others. Just keep an eye on it, and it will eventually subside." OR 2- "That doesn't seem right. We should take a closer look, and perhaps schedule another MRI (or some type of closer/cleaner look)"). Instead he looked at me like I was crazy, told me that was possible, was confused I could tell it was coming from that site, and basically told me I had a sweaty ass. I've been monitoring that area, and the sweat from that area, very closely over the past couple months as I've been easing back into my workouts. So, at this point I don't know what to think. Had an appointment with my PCP the other day (3 days after CRS follow-up), and expressed my concerns with him. He said to give it a couple more months, since I've read that it can take 6 months to fully heal from that, and if it was still an issue to either call CRS again, or he could refer me to another CRS. Anyhow, I'd really like to hear from anyone that had a fistulotomy, was told they were healed, but still had drainage, and find out how long it took for that to eventually subside. Or is this just my new normal now?

@@gouravverma6673 The drainage I'm currently dealing with is essentially water, or sweat, or perhaps very watery mucus. I typically get it overnight, about 2-3 hours after I fall asleep, I'll wake up and have to pee. I'll check my boxers and there's usually about 2-3 inch diameter wet spot on boxers, right near my anus. I'll change my boxers, and sometimes when I wake up after the full night, I'll have another small spot, sometimes nothing more. Aside from that, I feel I get a little "sweaty" in that area much easier than before surgery. I had yellow pus and bloody drainage for up to about 4 weeks after surgery. And blood during bowel movements once a week or so up until about 3 weeks ago. My surgery was 21/09/2023.

Same concerns. Fistulotomy only a month ago. Still getting drainage, explaining this same issue. I think scar tissue is forming in the valley of the wound, meaning it will take a very long time or never fill up to the correct level, always leaving a little hole for ass jiuce to flow out. So I am sending this info (with photos) to my surgeon prior to post op check up, to make sure they understand my expectation of my new normal, not to permanently wear a gaus patch or have ass rash from the surgery. I have so much scar tissue in my rectum that gets super hard , copious amounts. The pain is debilitating ~ I’ve been on the couch for almost six months My colostomy is doing wonderful. It save my life. But my rectum causes me pain 24/7 . What /where can I do /go ? Please 🙏🏼 grateful I found you !my lower colon is like stubbed band. I can’t push anything out ! Ugh 😩

I just had mine three weeks ago. Boy going to the restroom was by far the most painful experience of my life. It made me rethink all my life choices and made me feel that I was paying for all the bad things I had done in my life. Finally they pain has subsided! Now the next demon. The itching is driving me up the walls. Making me go absolutely crazy. What can I do?

Hey Dr. Chung. Your video’s have been a humongous help and I appreciate it. My question is that I’m on day 10 of post opp. Had a check up today and now I’m having diarrhea and it’s very bloody. I’m not in any pain but I was told to examine and take pics of it and it’s like constant blood clots that’s very thick in texture whenever I use the restroom. Any advice?

Very useful video Doctor &clear explanation. After Hemorrhoidectomy & LIS surgery, will Anal fissure also drain foul smelling pus ? I have a skin tag and a fissure wound - i get pus once in a day (around noon time) and it pains a lot when it comes. Is this normal ? My surgeon said it is part of healing process and will stop when the fissure inflammation heals.

Great question! Under normal and usually circumstances I would expect the discharge to end by 6-8 weeks.

Every person is different I had a complex anal fistula and it took me 5 surgeries over 18 months to heal. I don't have any underlying medical conditions and they felt I was just an un-lucky person. I had drainage right up until it finally closed 18 months later.

Hello doc, what should i do, I've done 3 times surgery. First May 2020, second January 2022 and 3rd last July 2021, but until now still draining, i think its a pus coming from my fistula. I dont want to undergo again the surgery. Please help me doc.

If there is constant leakage of puss and blood after surgery (8+ weeks) is this something that is still a sign of healing? Or should this have healed by this stage and therefore needs further investigation/ intervention? Learnt more from your channel than from 3 surgeons! Thank you!

Hi Doc. Thank God I saw this video. I’ve been very anxious after seeing pus drainage after my fistulotomy last week. I’m on my 7th day post op. Should I keep wearing my pads? I’m worried that by wearing one my wound would get infected.

Hi I am going to see a doctor as soon as I can get seen but is white pus from a chronic fissure after exercise normal? Also does a deep throbbing feeling suggest it could be infected? Have I just overdone things by trying to go running again? So worried it’s another abscess & fistula!

Thanks for the guidance Doc. I recently had a chronic fissure laser surgery. Feel no pain where the actual fissure was, but have swelling and pus like pimple and feeling pain near by the sphincterotomy is done. Also having discharges. Is it normal or have to change my doctor Waiting for your reply

Please help, I don't want to die. Does anybody know if a popped external hemorrhoid skin should turn slimy green after draining? Pus started out brown, now it's yellowish. Smell was horrible now it's not so bad, does green mean infection or healing skin? It turned green after I added preparation h 1 time and since been rinsing with witch hazel.

My wound is already healing, But, there was small hole not from properly but no redness, pain, anything nothing, 4weeks now of recovery, i saw little light green look like mucus, its not that to much, so small on my gauze. I had the same surgery. Do you remember how your healing went? They drained it and gave me 2 plugs to drain over the next month or so. I'm scared to have a bowel movement

@@charitysalud4314 @ because fistula keep coming back so many times, for example I have first surgery today and within 3 days my bottom fell so painful and I come back see my doctor and I get another surgery then another month come back again and surgery again & again, seton is kind rubber to close the hole that doctor make when he drained so when doctor think there's no more infection he will put seton on, so because I have big hole/wound the doctor put 2 setons but then seton keep failed and then doctor use clip to closed the hole, so how's your condition now/ and what kind fistula do you have
