Doc, you have opened a Pandora’s Box with this info! I love that you have told us about this diagnosis “strategy” that yields the insurance company more $$$. I just despise and despair over the state of the health care system (sorry…INDUSTRY) in this country. Yes, for emergency care the US is excellent; for long term or chronic conditions….we are not so good.

Thank you Dr Chung. It's sad that if one lives on very little they should pretty much just head to the elephant's graveyard.

I wish I would have seen this video before I just got billed $1500 for the exact reason of what you’re talking about. My doctor told me that I need to go in for a screening and I went back in a week later and told her that I have bleeding hemorrhoids, but I’m kind of paranoid about it now since she brought up the colon cancer screening. So she went ahead and did a PSA test just to make sure, and at the same time she sent it up as a diagnosis instead of a routine! I went in for a screening and it turned out. It was just a bleeding hemorrhoid, but they still won’t change The code from diagnosis to routine.

I'm 43 and have bloody diarrhea. Vomiting every day. Food not digesting for 9+ hours . Still 4k dollars. So I'll just let it keep happening. Also, I pay 900 month for insurance. So I guess I'll drop insurance for 4 months and can get my testing. Forget the bleeding and vomiting. Guess insurance would rather pay for surgery and chemo if I have cancer.

Another thing that will get you is if you tell them, you have a family history of colon cancer. They will also make that a diagnosis.

Can colonoscopies hurt hemorrhoids? Internal and external if you have both. Is it common for a G.i. Dr to do a colonoscopy to check and treat hemorrhoids? Thank you.

Thank you Dr! I am 38 and having some symptoms so would like a coloscopy very much. Is it possible to have my primary doc recommend me preventive referral ? (because I am not 45 yet and have no family history of this). Any suggestion would be most appreciated! thanks again!

What about removing a polyp during a screening colonoscopy? Is it free too? I got charged hundreds of $s for that, but the procedure itself was covered. Is that supposed to happen?
@yourfriendlyproctologist

Removal of a polyp is a separate procedure and it is possible you may have additional charges depending on your insurance plan.

UMR is puling the same crap..Went in for a 1st time screening with no problems or concerns before hand...they found a small polyp and cut it out and now the screening procedure has become a diagnostic just for one little polyp and now they are charging me $1500.00 We are fighting it.

Good evening. Im a 22 year old from south Africa and ive been suffering from anal fissures for the past 3 years. I feel like its extremly hard to find a good specialist who knows whats up and i actually only found out it was fissures this year... previous doctors diagnosed me differently... At this point though it feels really hopeless and i dont think the fiasures are healing...

My insurance is dragging their feet. They believe that removal of polyps that are pre-cancer are not preventative so they won't cover that part. I hate Aetna. In addition, my doctors want me to get colonoscopies every 3 to 5 years in order to prevent cancer. Why won't insurance cover it? 10 year gaps are very dangerous. Add to that, family history of colon cancer; one of my parents.
