MINI COURSE SERIES: • Spanish With Paul Mini...
MONDAY LESSON SERIES: • Monday's Spanish Lesso...
Hi everyone, Paul here :)
You know what... this lesson has a fancy title but it's really about something very simple (in English anyway)... the word "the".
Now there are 2 reasons why the definite article (the) is much more complicated in Spanish than in English and in this lesson I'll reveal how the definite article works, how it's different from what we're used to in English and why it's important to embrace (and use) those differences.
For many of you, this lesson will feel a little strange but in the end, it'll be a real eye opener!
Enjoy and let me know what you think,
Paul
P.S - For those of you wanting more, my complete course (away from KZfaq) is ready! It'll take you all the way into full conversational fluency as painlessly as possible as well as 1-1 access to me personally to coach you every step of the way :-)

Oh, and for those who may be curious, Paul is right that "emoción" is what we call a "falso amigo" -- a "false friend" that looks like a similar word in English but actually has a very different meaning. "Emotion" in Spanish is actually "sentimiento."

It was 43 years ago today that I had my very first lesson in Spanish 1, and what better way to celebrate my anniversary than to review one of the first basic lessons in the language? Suddenly I'm back in Sr. Allen's eighth-grade class and feeling what it felt like to learn all of this for the very first time. Thank you, Paul, for letting me see the language again through the eyes of a beginner!

One of my biggest mistakes when I studied German was not learning the gender along with each new noun I learned. Later on I happened to read a beginning reading book for children, one with pictures of various things and their German names. In each case, the name included the definite article (e.g., die Katze). Now that I am studying Spanish, I try to remember the combination of the article and the noun when I learn a new noun. This seems to work better than trying to remember if a noun is masculine or feminine, even though, compared to German, Spanish displays a stronger connection between biological and grammatical gender (e.g., das Maedchen).

Me pregunto si es muy comun usar ”me encanta” para cosas mundano? Como en ingles estadounidense, la gente puede por ejemplo ”looove” tus pantalones etc. Es la misma en Mexico y otras paises donde hablan español?

Muy bueno, Marleen, pero se debe decir "me gustan, me cantan, y me interesan much los vídeos," porque "videos" es plural, así que los verbos deben ser plurales también.

Thanks Paul....Another great lesson. Maybe a future discussion on the Spanish neuter definite article "lo". This one confused me at first because it's usually seen as a direct object pronoun. The first time I came across phases like "lo mismo" and "lo importante" I didn't know what to do with "lo". Maybe you've already covered it in your course and I just haven't got that far into it yet. I just thought it would make a good topic. Salud!!!
@legaleagle46
@legaleagle46 6 жыл бұрын
The neuter definite article "lo" is only used with adjectives that are being used as abstract substantives. Think of it as saying "the same THING" (lo mismo) or "the important THING" (lo importante) and it will make more sense to you.

No, because it's being used as an adverb here. Adverbs are invariable, which means that they do not change for gender.
