Yes, I should be hiding my head in the sand that I didn't change my 2005 Jeep Liberty motor oil for over four years! I have a partial excuse but I'm still not proud of letting an oil change go so long overdue. My Jeep Liberty went through a string of accidents rendering it un-drivable for some of that time while I worked on swapping out it's bent axle shaft followed by replacing it's entire rear axle assembly. Then, I was forced to start working from home due to COVID-19 restrictions so I literally wasn't driving anywhere at anytime. In face, this Liberty only spent enough time on the road to keep it charged, keep it's seals from drying out and only because I was trying to use it every couple weeks for short drives to keep it running. However, all oil needs to get changed even if it's not driven very much simply due to condensation, oxidation and natural chemical breakdown of it's various additives. All in all, just not a great idea letting it go so long without an oil change.
That's why I trust ‪@AMSOILinc‬ full-synthetic motor oils. Their products are high-quality and formulated for the best outcomes giving me a peace of mind I simply don't get with standard, regular brand motor oils. For added peace of mind, I wanted to try AMSOIL Engine Flush to be sure as much of this old oil was removed upon performing this oil change. What came out sure looked black and it flowed very freely making me consider the strong detergents in the AMSOIL engine flush did their duty. Prior to adding the flush, I actually sampled a small amount of motor oil and sent it for analysis as I was curious how the AMSOIL synthetic motor oil in the Jeep Liberty held up over those four and half years of sitting outside in cold Michigan Winters and humid, hot Michigan Summers rarely being used and when driven it was only for short drives which is a formula for disaster for most cars and trucks. Ever since doing this AMSOIL engine flush before draining that very old engine oil, I can truly tell my Liberty's V6 has been running like new! I know debunkers will cry foul but I truly try to be objective and I'm telling you, the engine has never run smoother and the power has definitely returned...even my wife commented on it the other day on what's now a nearly 20 year old SUV. Good point about the transmission. Even reputable technicians will say that you shouldn’t flush a transmission with more than about 65 or 70 thousand miles on it. You’re supposed to just drain and replenish what you drained, which is not all of the fluid in the system.

My Liberty says to change transmission fluid every 60,000 miles but I got into changing it every 20,000 miles presuming it always leaves a certain amount in the torque converter each time...seems to have done the trick over all these years it shifts like new.

@@WorksIRL If I remember correctly, the tech at Honda said there was almost 10 quarts in my ‘99 Accord, but only 5 quarts drains. That’s all you replace.

@@DiligentDave1966 that sounds right…I went by fill capacity on my Liberty’s transmission and dropping its pan and letting it drip out all night I think I calculated about 1/3 remained unchanged which is where I came up with changing it every 20k instead of 60k…figured the full amount has been replaced no more than 60k miles. Crude but I think effective 👍.

@@WorksIRL Agreed! I bought an '02 camry with 200k mi., and I did a ATF drain & fill as soon as I got it home. Thankfully, it was still clear, but very dark in color. And it didn't have any sediment. I did another drain & fill 500mi. later, then a 3rd drain & fill after another 500mi. now it drives like new

You can also use Seafoam. That stuff is a mechanic in a bottle. I dump a bottle in my tank about every 4th or 5th fill up. Before I go into get my oil changed I will dump a bottle into the engine and run it on the way there. Maybe 10 minutes, no more. When they drain it, the crap that comes out is amazing. And then I refill with 100% synthetic.

That stuff has been around forever it seems and the positive results you’ve experienced must be exactly why! Additives and flushes are seemingly polarizing with half swearing by their regular usage and the other half naysaying they’re simply money making snake oils causing more harm than good. I find it hard to argue with results like you’ve had and what I’m seeing thus far with this AMSOIL flush 👍. I don't use Amsoil motor oil anymore. Just too expensive. However, I still do use their transmission fluid as I believe it is the best out there

I'm sorry to hear AMSOIL has lost you due to their pricing...I think they try to keep it reasonable as they can given the high-quality ingredients and trying to locally-source as much as possible. Glad to hear you trust their flush even with their pricing. Thanks for watching and sharing your thoughts! By the way, I do use their 12k-mile "middle-grade" to cut costs a little from their highest "Signature" 25k-mile oil and to me it doesn't seem that much more than the comparable oils...though, I do pay $16/year to be a "Preferred Customer" but it usually more than saves me that just in lower prices and often free shipping and other "free" deals/discounts, etc.

Around $11.50 as a PC case pricing for the top Signature. Not bad at all. Or just under $10 for XL. Penzoil here locally is $13 per quart so Amsoil shipped is the better deal.

My engine had the "tan" looking goo on the bottom of the dip stick. Turns out I had a PCV/Africa plate causing excess crank case pressure. Changed out the valve; no more tan goo, and less oil "sweating" around the engine. Even the dealers and specialty shop failed to identify this problem.

It's nice to hear someone else state that as well! 💪Honestly, if I had owned this Liberty back in my teens through my early 30s, my forearms were much thicker and would never have fit through those steering/suspension components to reach that oil filter.

130,000 miles isn’t really a whole lot nowadays… Try when it’s 250,000 or more that oil filter is not that bad to get at try the GM 3.6 in the application of a Traverse, Acadia, Enclave or Outlook You can’t get it from the bottom you have to get it from the top and it’s on the side of the block next to the exhaust manifold and between the cooling fan assembly and engine You have to come from the top and not burn yourself on the manifold and not break the oil pressure sensor that’s right next to it and you’re guaranteed spilling it

Ugh! That GM 3.6 oil filter location as you’re describing sounds like a scene from “Indiana Jones and Oil Change of Doom”! 🤣 I concur 130k miles isn’t like it was on vehicles of my youth but when trying to stay on-track with OEM oil change maintenance schedule then going 4.5 years in less than favorable conditions that’s a big change allowing mental paranoia if not real potential physical decay. Like so much of these “flushes” it’s likely more mentally soothing than real 😂. Thanks for watching and sharing how much worse my oil filter changes could be 👍.

oil doesn't really break down like you think it does. How do I know this? Because the Military doesn't change their oil on a regular basis. We send the oil samples in and the lab told us when it needed to be changed. It isn't milk that expires. Oil needs to be changed when it is dirty, more or less, when it is full of metallic particles too small for the filter to remove.

@@WorksIRL Thanks for your support. Yes, oil will break down when being used and abused, but it is mostly discarded when it is full of material that "flakes" off of the interior of the engine that is too small for the filter to hold, or when it gets too hot after heavy use of the engine.

You're right, hand-tight is usually sufficient. I got into habit of giving my oil filters a bit more of a tighten after witnessing some "vibrating loose" and leaking on off-road vehicles, especially those that enter cold Winter months after having had their filters installed hand-tight in warmer months. Hand-tight usually does the trick, though. Thanks again for watching and sharing your insights!

The reason why engines mess up is because people change their oil every 10000 or so. Halve that and every 3rd change do a flush. Thank me later.

What you’re saying does make good sense and I’ve definitely questioned the AMSOIL party line of their mid-grade and top-tier motor oils and oil filters touting 12k/1-year and 25k/1-year change intervals. I don’t question their product quality but I do wonder if changing more frequently isn’t just a cheap hedge without the potential risk of entrusting chemical formulations. Your way seems 💯 solid 💪🤣.

I have a Toyota 2ZZ GE Celica. I always change every 2500 to 3000 miles. A flush every 3rd change. With modern engines especially with VVT timing gears and narrow oil veins, my engine still retains good compression and minimal wear. The Car Care Guy on here is a Toyota specialist, on any engine I think regular changes - whilst sounds costly - can save a huge headache and mega expense bill later on. Why buy so many small bottles of oil when it is always cheaper to get the one large one of around 5 or 6 litres?

You would think so but like those notorious “jugs” of Heinz ketchup that cost more per ounce than the smaller bottles and 2.5 gallon containers of drinking water that cost more per fluid ounce than the smaller gallon jug, so is the case for AMSOIL gallon jugs of oil costing more per fluid ounce than the quart bottles per fluid ounce. I know, it utter defies logic and I hate the waste of all those plastic quart bottles. Now that I’m no longer an independent AMSOIL dealer and just a Preferred Customer, I decided to pay a bit more per fluid ounce to get the gallon jugs to try slightly reducing my plastic container waste. What about the engine flush in the system that wasn’t evacuated? The only time I’ve flush, on a truck that sat for years, I ran SuperTech through it for a few hundred miles before going to Amsoil. No way it doesn’t adversely affect the oil.

I had the same thought as it seems only natural that some of the flush remains after draining. I put trust in the AMSOIL engineers following their instructions and I presume it likely means the flush simply contains higher concentrations of ingredients normally found in motor oil already and after draining they must calculate the mixture would be diluted enough with the new oil to not have an appreciable impact. Just my presumptions but I do agree with you that there must be some quantity left behind after draining. Thanks for watching and sharing your insights! 👍

Regularly changing the oil is the right answer but WFH has messed up how often I drive my vehicles so I found myself not needing to drive as often combined with some other life events and time just flies by. Thanks for watching and commenting!

You're right, the bottle is listed for engines and transmissions. However, my hesitation on using in automatic transmission is the fact that unless you actually "flush" out the entire automatic transmission by purpose-built professional transmission servicing equipment or disconnecting the transmission fluid lines to/from a transmission cooler, some of that flush would remain in the torque converter. I've done my own automatic transmission changes by simply dropping the transmission pan and I'd estimate about ⅕ to ¼ of the fluid remains in the torque converter so I'll generally do more-frequent transmission changes like every 20,000 miles if my Jeep calls for changing it every 60,000 miles...that's likely a bit extreme but it seems to have kept the fluid very clean and no transmission issues. So, I decided I'd only use the flush in the engine, not the transmission. If you're doing DIY, you might consider doing the same thing. By the way, I watched and enjoyed your "Jim's" video a few months ago and like your premise of "urban Jeeping"! 💪I've always joked that our roads are so poorly maintained and such horrible condition here in Michigan that you need a 4x4, heavy-duty Jeep just to drive on-road without ever going off-road so I can relate to your bumpy old streets!😆Thanks for watching!

I've seen that B12 Chemtool on the shelves and been meaning to look into that one, too...good to hear your testimony that you've had good luck with that one. AMSOIL engine flush is $14.69 retail from AMSOIL's website but I'm a preferred customer so it's $11.29/bottle. Even then, I think I've gotten my bottles for free from AMSOIL from various "spend $50, get a free bottle of flush" type deals. I'm so behind on my videos and need to publish the one with follow-up from the flush...I'll do as you state and post it's URL here. @@josemedeiros007According to AMSOIL.COM website, AMSOIL P.I. Performance Improver Gasoline Additive is $16.69/bottle retail and $12.99/bottle as a Preferred Customer. Again, I think I've gotten bottles for free and/or $5-deals AMSOIL periodically does throughout the year for Preferred Customers which is when I usually pick up a bottle. I've found paying $16/year to be an AMSOIL Preferred Customer more than pays back that annual fee and if I spend $500 on products in any given year they give me a free year's membership. I've been trying to cut back on spending so I haven't hit that amount myself but it's not hard to do if I'm maintaining multiple vehicles. I still have some stock left over I'm using up from when I was an AMSOIL independent dealer so I still have "surplus" since I wasn't a "go-getter" dealer...mainly just did it to get the cheapest "dealer cost" for when my kids were still living at home and I had a "family fleet" of vehicles to maintain🤣.

The AMSOIL instructions on the bottle and their website simply refer to using a single bottle without referencing engine volume. I wouldn't be surprised two bottles may be even better but I'm curious what lead you to this conclusion. Thanks for watching and look forward to hearing more from you 👍

@@WorksIRL 1 bottle for washing the 2.0 L engine at a technical level. The best practice is Amsoil detergent + new sacrificial oil (two bottles) 10 minutes. No oil resists friction and detonations that develop extreme temperature (almost the metal loses its shape) but here comes treatment with Metal Lube products that solve the problem (what is used today restores the tribology tomorrow) with a nanomicron film. There are other companies Prolong, Dura Lube but the nanomicrometric film is not sufficiently penetrating. It is an option, no nothing breaks.

Please forgive me dodging your direct questions but all vehicle manufacturers state owners should perform vehicle maintenance according to the manufacturer's vehicle maintenance schedule stated in the vehicle's owner's manual and those usually explicitly state not using any additives or cleaners in the engine. That said, the irony is my local Jeep dealership service department routinely pressures all the owners in their quick-oil change lane to purchase a multitude of various expensive additives and packages from flushes to various additives which is one of the reasons I stopped going to dealerships and perform all my own maintenance. 🤷🏻‍♂ What you do with your Jeep is your decision. I presume AMSOIL has done their research as to their engine flush being safe to use per their stated flush instructions and that's why I felt it was safe to use in my video using it to flush what was some very old oil in my 2005 Jeep Liberty 3.7 V6. In regard to your Jeep Grand Cherokee, again, I'd have to rely on AMSOIL's statements about usage safety but I personally would question whether you really need to use a flush given how relatively new your vehicle still is being a 2018 with only 28k miles on it. To me, that's almost still a brand new vehicle and engine. Presuming it has had its oil changed per the vehicle's recommended schedule and the proper certified oil and viscosity has been used in it. In regard to using 0W20 Extended Protection Valvoline motor oil, I don't have any experience with it as I've used AMSOIL exclusively for well over a decade. As long as that Valvoline 0W20 is the viscosity your 3.6L V6 requires and the motor oil meets Jeep's certification requirement (i.e.: API rating, etc.) then I'd presume it's okay but again, you need to make your own call on these types of decisions. If you read through the comments here, you'll find as many differing opinions about using and not using engine flushes and a myriad of different methods and products for those that say to do a flush but even there you'll find many don't agree doing it on younger vehicles and some say don't do it on older vehicles. The easiest answer is just follow the manufacturer's stated maintenance recommendation. I'm personally inclined to trust AMSOIL and their products because I've used them so long and think my vehicles have operated better than my vehicles used to operate before I started using AMSOIL. Again, sorry for not giving you a direct answer but these vehicles cost us an arm and leg so you really just have to make your own best judgement on how you prefer to maintain them. One thing that annoy me about them is not very environmentally friendly with all the plastic bottles, why can't they do a five and a half litre bottle? for the same price as five litre small bottles that would save them that money in plastic no need to have all these small bottles filling up the environment please stop it tell amsoil to put it in one bottle. It just makes more sense who wants to be having cluttered up with all these bottles plus if you want to empty your old oil you need to container to put it in you can use the old oil bottle if it's big enough what is the problem with them? Please dispose of you oil in the appropriate places don't put it down the drain

I agree with you on it's painful having to throw away so many quart bottles given most recycling operations refuse to accept used motor oil plastic bottles. AMSOIL does sell a "1-gallon" jug which I've been using lately but get this...it costs MORE per ounce than the single quart bottles...that really bugs me! It's like American Heinz catchup where unlike most products where you pay less per unit buying the larger container, the smaller container is actually cheaper per ounce...go figure! Regarding the proper disposal of the used oil, I just answered a fellow that basically took me to task on not delivering some epic idea on my "shorts" video titled "What DIYer does with used motor oil". He expected some epic idea and was utterly disappointed and lambasted me for showing taking my used motor oil to a local auto parts retailer to properly dispose and recycle my used motor oil...classic "you just can't please everybody" 😆Thanks for watching this video and sharing your thoughts on the AMSOIL packaging...again, I agree with you! 👍

@@WorksIRL ask them why it costs more to sell one gallon? Say to them People are not happy about having small bottles, why are they not willing to help the environment!! as well? see what they say. it might change their minds and offer it slightly at a discounted price even 50 cents or a dollar.

@@jedi-mic I will send AMSOIL a "comment to the editor" type remark expressing what you're rightfully asking. AMSOIL has a "Preferred Customer" magazine they publish quarterly and I'll see if I can get an answer from them that way. Unfortunately, my cynical "business mind" likely knows the answer in that there's probably a profit/loss sheet that shows they either make more from the quart bottles per unit even though it may cost more in materials but when they take into account "inventory rotation" and other factors...but, given what seems like a more environmental focus some corporations are at least trying to show, maybe they'll provide some change. @@WorksIRL yes they probably make more money from quarter bottles but that's not the point is it??. isn't it about ethics we're trying to eliminate plastics as much as possible not add more, I would go to the extent that they should put them in metal tins again metal tins are still available for oil. and the government offer a rebate if you use non-plastic containers because of the extra weight, I'll put it to Karmela Harris. Not so much with metal tins I don't think there's much in it but with glass and Tupperware what should come back more,A rebate tax should be offered to companies or bi gradable plastics. Yeah let me know what they say if it gets in that is ;) if we all bang the Drum hard enough they might listen! Tell them to do a survey, would you buy our oil over the competition if we went more green with using less plastic or alternatively using tins containers.

@@jedi-mic I like your thinking! 👏Gosh, I recycle every ounce of metal in my life to the point of obsession! 🤣I can’t stand seeing metal objects in the garbage bins in my neighborhood to be thrown into landfills! I like your idea of going back to oil cans…so much better than plastic in landfills. 👍

I, too, have always been skeptical on such “pour ‘n fix it” bottles of “magic juice” 🤣. However, I do think this AMSOIL flush may have some merit. I may try again on another sitting vehicle soon…hard to measure if it’s really doing anything beyond just psychological effects 🤔

I would've put a cheap oil and another filter on to flush it again before the amsoil. I did another oil flush with fresh oil just to make sure the engine flush was all out and then I put a slightly thicker oil in for my next oil change.

That is a prudent process you describe and certainly would be sure all the old oil and flush is flushed and cleaned out. 👍 I've been really impressed even just doing it the way I did in the video with this flush then the oil change...the Liberty has been running like a champ! Super smooth acceleration and far better power...quieter engine, too. I'm sure debunkers would say it's a placebo effect but I've tried really hard to be objective and it's been an amazing performance that I'm really thinking this flush does really work. Thanks for watching and sharing your even more diligent cleaning process ideas. 💪

@@WorksIRL Its not a placebo effect, it works. I did it on my 2012 Subaru STI. I normally put 5W30 in it, but after the flush, I put in 5W40 which is fine, but it has never run better since I did it. It runs smoother.

Oil technology today has been proven superior....yet people stilllll saying to change every 3,000 for insurance. If you like to waste time and money, go ahead. If you are not using the superior oils and filters designed for extended intervals...AND actually testing your oil for feedback...you are misinformed and providing bad advise to others. BMW "says" I can go 10k miles...but my oil lab analysis reports using AMSOIL Euro says 8k-8.5k is safe range (maybe even 9-9.5k) for the additives to still work so I am changing at about 7.5-8k range. AMSOIL Euro is one of the small handful of BMW spec approved oils available. I will flush about every 4th or 5th oil change.

What you're stating sounds about right based on what I've researched as well. 👍Lots of "old school advice" that's been around since the days of old makes some minds hard to change. I do think part of the issue is engine designs have drastically changed in the past two decades so there's a fair "mixing" of old and new engines where some of those "older engines" user manuals still espouse the tried and true 3k intervals. Combined with relatively inexpensive oil changes many folks figure it's "cheap insurance" playing it safe and changing when there's likely plenty of oil life remaining. I need to get my engine oil analysis results videos up which will reinforce what you're stating as well. Thanks for watching and sharing your insights! 💪

my dad & i used 2 change hiz oil in a company car as low as 1600 miles, because ''real' oil back then was NOT very good...

There was a reason why the "every 3,000-mile interval" was gospel! 🤣I still get a bit "on-edge" when I surpass the manufacturer's recommended interval and putting faith in AMSOIL's testing/claims but I've done it now with so many different vehicles with so many different engines and I feel like they've all run better than ever (knock on wood 😆) that I've come to trust it. @@AG-rk5hj I find it sad to think BMW’s reputation for German quality has fallen so far that your statement now holds merit ☹️. I’ve listened to interviews with “older”, retired German engineers from BMW, Mercedes, Audi and VW say things at those companies fell apart when their CEO/presidents starting coming from the ranks of the financial and accounting backgrounds rather than the former life-long engineers they used to promote to the executive ranks. So many formerly quality-driven corporations have dumbed themselves down into caring only about ROI and investors…maybe they’ll get some grown ups back and realize what they squandered and start focusing on a quality product again 🤞.
