I was born in 1950 and my family always watched Lawrence Welk. I loved the Lennon sisters! I had their paper dolls and read their series of books. They helped to make my young life so much more enriched.

This is so sweet! Like her sisters, Mimi was immersed in music and just "got it" from babyhood when learning is very easy. I really love watching performances from years ago. As they sing, the girls (the older girls) are smiling with their eyes. I'm missing it these days. Wonderful analysis, Fil!❤️

Musical families just kind of absorb the sound! Our son was singing at two, and my mother commented she had never heard one so young sing on pitch. I hadn’t noticed. Mother was a church organist. My Dad was a singer. We always had music playing in our home. Lots of listening. It really is a language that is modeled, like learning to talk.

That really is impressive. If she is like most four-year-olds, she picks up easily what she hears. Since the Lennon sisters were prolific singers, that has to be a big part of it.

I was 7 that year, and I remember this, because my entire family watched Lawrence Welk all the time! Also, Mitch Miller, and any and every TV Show with MUSIC in it. During Lawrence Welk, as my Sister and I got a bit older, we'd have fun by dancing (in exagerated, theatrical way) behind the couch, where my Dad was stretched out; making light fun of some of the more "old fashioned" music.....until Dad and Mom would notice us and laugh at our "performance"!

The Lennon Sisters are now a Trio that perform regularly in Branson Missouri with Kathy, Janet, and Mimi. The two oldest girls, Dianne and Peggy retired sometime ago.

I remember them, Fil, and, I can't believe that two are retired, but three are still performing! They were everywhere back then. Hi Fil, What an awesome performance and I dare anyone young or old to top that! Mimi is just so cute and definitely holding her own with her big sisters to support her. Amazing how this performance is so mesmerizing and they are just all standing there doing their thing!! Lol… No hysterical runs, no dancing, fully clothed and just sound as beautiful as ever. A true testament to great singing and their abundance of talent. Such a delightful analysis for a Sunday afternoon. The Lennon sisters never get old, and have stood the test of time. Mimed performances on live tv shows were actually rare in this period, particularly in the US. They became commonplace a few years later, but much more-so in Europe (where shows like the UK’s “Ready Steady Go” and “Top of the Pops” pioneered the practice). I think you could be pretty confident that any performance from a US variety show in the Ed Sullivan / Tonight Show mould that dates from at least the first half of the sixties will be genuinely live.

Boy, this took me back to my childhood. I loved watching the Lennon Sisters on TV on the Lawrence Welk show & later on other shows. Not sure what was more fun... listening to them, or watching that smile of pure delight spread across your face as you listened.

How I used to hate it when my parents would tune in The Lawrence Welk TV show. I wanted Rock 'N Roll! The only regular part of the show I rather liked was when the Lennon Sisters sang. I don't remember this particular show. Before he got on TV, Lawrence Welk and his band traveled around playing small venues. My parents said that they used to go dance to his orchestra's music in a very small town in Southwestern Pennsylvania. As I remember the place was called The Sunset Ballroom. That would have probably been in the late 1930s/early 1940s or the 1940s after WWII.

Seeing the very young Mimi with her sisters made me think of the very young Michael Jackson and what he must have learned and picked up from his brothers, almost via osmosis, as young children do. Sponges, really! I have fond memories of watching Lawrence Welk with my Grandmother, so the Lennon Sisters are part of the soundtrack of my early life. Thank you, Fil!

Yes, she's definitely humming along there. She looks pretty serious, probably because of the unfamiliar environment, but you can tell from the humming that she likes to sing. Great video. Thank you for sharing.

I need their sound in my life! I'm 69. There is no more beautiful sound than theirs. I don't know if everybody can do this, but I can hear them by just starting a song in my head and listening to it. I can use a song they've never done and hear THEM sing it. I can hear Bing Crosby...or anyone that I have heard. Is everyone like this? Having a fan going makes it even easier, but I usually don't use one. Say, it's a great way to go to sleep.

I saw my first video of British Guitarist Analyzes when you had 13K followers. I hated analysis videos, so I almost didn't click on it. But I watched it, since I liked the song...and I liked the analysis. I quickly subbed, and 315K other people agree with me. You are special, and I've learned a lot. If at the time you would have told me that I would be watching the Lennon Sisters and their baby sister singing Do Re Mi....and that I would be thinking this is one of the greatest analyses you have done...Rock.

I think with children it's sometimes the reverse of what we think--NOT formally learning something can make them better at it. Singing should be a very natural thing.

Growing up we watched Lawrence Welk too and the Lennon Sisters were my favorite, especially Janet. I had Janet paper dolls too. I don't remember Mimi though. She looked scared.

i have a 4 year old granddaughter she loves to sing, by coincident she found a Microphone i had laying around and told me to plug it in ? How even did she know? So i plugged it in and played on the keyboard twinkle twinkle and she sung almost in perfect pitch with no hesitation which is crazy, usually kids don't like to have a mike in front of their mouth! I had tears in my eyes !

Mimi is the real thing, and look how _proud_ her sisters are of her! (Edit to add, the harmony @ 1:38 is epic.) Totally agree with you about child singers. People post videos with, "OMG, listen to this 4-year-old killing it!" And I swear, before the era of ubiquitous pitch correction, 99 times out of a hundred, trying to listen to that so-called amazing singing from the kid made my ears bleed. 😬

As to your comment about young children performing. All the sisters touching her, in essence protecting and supporting her, leaves me with the feeling that there is no exploitation at all going on here. Just a loving family sharing their amazing gifts with us.

My big event when I was 4. Went out to California to visit my aunt and uncle. They lived just a few houses from the Lennon Sisters. Janet was my favorite. I'm almost 70 now

Great video Fil. Mimi obviously has a lot of natural talent or a "good ear" because I don't think natural pitch can be taught to a little one that age. I could be wrong but it seems pretty natural to me.

Before I discovered the Beatles, our family used to watch The Lawrence Welk Show on TV. Of course the Lennon Sisters were regulars. Here the ironic part - John Lennon's Aunty who raised him was named 'Mimi' (as was my own Mother!). I wonder if Mimi Lennon ever gave any thought to that? Of course in my family all my cousins called my Mother 'Aunt Mimi'. John's Aunty Mimi had the last name of Smith as she was not from the Lennon side of the family - her Sister was married to John' father Alf Lennon for a brief period. That is all. Carry on.

I used to watch the Lawrence Welk Show every Saturday night back then and just LOVED the LENNON SISTERS. JANET Lennon ( the one on the left of the screen who was the youngest one in the group (except for Mimi here, which I don't remember ever seeing her until now) and she was a year older than me. I MISS them. After they left the Lawrence Welk Show, I never watched it much after that.

I love that you said music is a language. My kids started singing and playing together very young just because they loved it. It was fun to blend their voices, it was fun to play with instruments and we all loved to hear it and celebrate them. Watching Mimi looking nervous but knowing just where to come in and sing along instinctually is a great example of music as a language - a poetry.

@@cindi1313 she sure did! If that were me, i would have either run away or soiled my undies! I had stage fright all my life until i forced myself to sing with live band punk rock karaoke. It was fun! But i could see my hands trembling as i held onto the mic. This little girl got it going on!

@joannasunday - I still remember vividly my first clarinet solo in 5th grade. I was petrified , since I was singled out to do this, in between concert band numbers. I had performed it at the solo and ensemble contest, before a panel of 5 judges. But this was in the high school auditorium. I just focused on the back wall, and the piano accompaniment started and I began. I could not even think about it. I just did it, and got to the end. Looking back on it, GOD got me through it. I was almost paralyzed. If I had messed up, I couldn't have recovered. That's why I know there was divine intervention. About 6 or 7 yrs later, the Band Director asked me if I wanted to hear it. I was totally floored at how good it sounded. I just remember being in zombie zone mode. 😂

I think her "looking around" is actually her trying to keep up with her camera cues. There is one camera shooting the group and then a second camera cutting to her close-up, and I'm sure she was directed to look at the different cameras depending on the angle. So ON TOP of this being her first appearance, and her being only 4-5 years old, and having quick-cut vocal cues, she's ALSO either remembering stage direction from previous rehearsals, or paying enough attention to follow in-the-moment stage direction. SUPERSTAR!!! 🤩

I love that I didn't think for a moment that you'd say something damaging to a singer who was a child. I also like that you always talk about how not being exactly on pitch is still "musical." The "family" part of the Lennon sisters was so important (even with the death of their father, because of their fame) that the musicality of all of them is worth examining. Mimi's older sisters are holding on to her throughout this performance, which is just great.

She’s growing up around perfectionists, so how could she possibly go wrong. An added bonus is that _Sound of Music_ is in my top 10 fave movie list. I’d be embarrassed to tell you how many times I’ve seen it. Wasn’t aware of your other video on them, so I’ll check it out. They’re smooth like butter, and the luscious tones somehow does something tingly in your brain, if that makes any sense. Finally, I always enjoy watching YOU enjoy what you do. Its so great ta know NOW, what we couldnt have known THEN about the very young in the bis? Art L was mentioned,along with most of the talk/performance shows having a few child prodigys gracing the stage during the 60s BUT?... who couldve imagined they would become common place on FB reels? I remember most being quite bashful, being interviewed after their perfomance much like Mimi looks here? Her exposure to a camera at home, (with sound) was likely limited then? Yeah kids, the 60s....when we looked up at the sun, with eyeballs melting down our faces and WE LIKED IT!🙃 Thanks Fil, for providing the ultimate audio 411, where we ALWAYS await your next syllable with great eagerness.😎

We're talking probabilities here: if one four year old can do it then there are other unexploited four year olds out there who can.
